This guide explains how to resolve the "failed to connect to patch server" error.

Note:
  • "Updater" is a synonym for "patch client".
  • You must use Internet Explorer where the instructions specify to because the updater uses it to download updates.
Determining where the problem lies

Test whether you can access the update server using both Internet Explorer and another web browser, such as Chrome, Firefox, or Opera:
  • In Internet Explorer, enter "ftp://patch1.playragnarok.com/" into the address field and then press enter.
  • If you are presented with a list of folders that includes aspnet_client, cpatch, csakpatch, patch, ro2patch, and sakpatch, then the test was successful. Otherwise, it was unsuccessful.
  • If the test was unsuccessful (in Internet Explorer), then repeat steps 1–2 with another web browser.
If you are only unable to access the server using Internet Explorer, then go to the Fixing Internet Explorer section.

If you are unable to access the server using neither Internet Explorer or another web browser, then go to the Fixing your Internet connection section.

If you are able to access the server using Internet Explorer, then test whether the problem has been resolved by opening the IRO client. (Simply accessing the update server using Internet Explorer can sometimes resolve the problem.)

Fixing Internet Explorer

Try each of the following steps in order:
  • Restart your computer.
  • If you have any download managers installed, such as FlashGet, Free Download Manager, or GetRight, then configure them to not integrate with Internet Explorer. (The credit for this advice belongs to Ghen.)
  • Scan for and remove any malware from your computer using software such as Malwarebytes Anti-malware.
  • Reset your Internet Explorer configuration.

Note: I recommend that you create a backup of your Internet Explorer configuration before doing this. If you are unable to access the Internet or Web after resetting your configuration, then restore the backup.
  • Scan for and repair any corrupted system files.
  • If a newer version of Internet Explorer is available, then upgrade to it.
Fixing your Internet connection

Try each of the following steps in order:
  • Open and close the updater several times (no more than seven times should be necessary).
  • Clear your DNS resolver cache:
    • Open Command Prompt.
    • Enter "ipconfig /flushdns".
  • If you use a third-party firewall, then test whether you can update the IRO client while the firewall is temporarily disabled. If you can, then revise your firewall configuration accordingly. You should also do the same for your router's firewall if it has one.

Warning: Do not permanently disable your router's firewall because doing so could expose your computer and any other devices on your local area network to threats.
  • Restart your router.
If none of these steps resolve the problem, then please reply to this thread with the following information:
  • The results of completing the test described in the Determining where the problem lies section.
  • Where you are attempting to connect from. (For example, your home.)
  • The manufacturer and model of your router. (Most routers have a label on their base on which this information is printed.)

When I got this error on one of my computers, it was caused by Google public DNS returning SERVFAIL for a query on patch1.playragnarok.com.

20:34:42.899398 IP x.x.x.x.58276 > 8.8.8.8.53: 40290+ A? patch1.playragnarok.com. (41)
20:34:43.008528 IP 8.8.8.8.53 > x.x.x.x.58276: 40290 ServFail 0/0/0 (41)
20:34:43.008964 IP x.x.x.x.57097 > 8.8.8.8.53: 34908+ A? patch1.playragnarok.com. (41)
20:34:43.077908 IP 8.8.8.8.53 > x.x.x.x.57097: 34908 ServFail 0/0/0 (41)
20:34:43.078202 IP x.x.x.x.44226 > 8.8.8.8.53: 64143+ A? patch1.playragnarok.com. (41)
20:34:43.284764 IP 8.8.8.8.53 > x.x.x.x.44226: 64143 ServFail 0/0/0 (41)

Comcast DNS (75.75.75.75) also does this sometimes.

It seems that Gravity's authoritative servers for patch.1.online.ragnarok.warpportal.net. (for which patch1.playragnarok.com is an alias) are returning different DNSSEC-related records, and whether the query succeeds for a DNSSEC-validating resolver (like Google public DNS and Comcast) depends on which server was hit for the relevant records.

Gravity still haven't fixed that?!

As Google Public DNS now performs DNSSEC validation, is the only way to work around this problem to use another public DNS service or repeatedly open and close the updater until it succeeds in resolving the address of the update server?

It used to fail every time. Now there's like a 33% chance to succeed.

Pretty much. Also, after a success the resolver caches the record for one hour, so anyone else using that particular one will temporarily experience no problems.

Oddly enough, I only get this error in my laptop. A bit off-topic, google chrome loads forever at the same time when RO can't patch. Please bear in mind that the problem only occurs in my laptop, everything works perfectly fine in the other computer. Does anyone have any idea about this problem?

Edit: I don't use IE, but do I still need to do these steps?

Oddly I get this error until I put in the url of the patch site in Internet Explorer like it says in step 2. Then I can connect :S. Works, but still weird how it fixes instantly.

What do you mean "loads forever"? If you're saying that pages just hang at loading, that would suggest a problem with internet access in general on that system...

Exactly, this's just my laptop though the computer of my house works perfectly fine.

Edit: Nvm, everything works again after restarting my laptop for windows update lol.

Yes, I don't know why it works, but it does. :)

Eh? I can't replicate that behaviour.

Are you sure that you entered the correct address? If so, then I'd recommend you scan your computer for malware and then reset Internet Explorer's configuration.

I don't understand why the updater would be unable to connect to the server when Internet Explorer (which the updater uses to download updates) is able to.

Have you recently installed any new software on your computer? Have you tried restarting your computer?

Try restarting your computer. If that doesn't work, then test whether the problem persists while your firewall is temporarily disabled.

Hi, thank you for creating this thread, but I am unable to fix the problem even after going through the steps.

I am attempting to connect through steam, and usually I have to attempt it about 3-4 times until it connects, and it usually successfully connects, but now it simply will not. Nothing changed from today and yesterday when I was able to play. It simply repeats the message "Failed to connect to patch server" once the patcher opens.

I went through your steps, I am able to SUCCESFULLY connect in internet explorer to those files in the link you provided, and am UNSUCCESSFUL in connecting with Chrome or Firefox.

I tried flushing the DNS, disabling the firewall temporarily, and restarting my router. I am still unable to.

I am attempting to connect from my home. WIndows 7 Home Premium. A PC. My router is cisco model 157082028. My ISP is comcast. I've tried opening the executables directly from the steam folder, no difference.

I'd really appreciate some help. Thank you for your time.
