Hello everyone!

I am a completely new player, never played Ragnarok before, and was wondering what class would be most suited for a new player such as me with a big fat 0 in everything :D, really enjoy to be able to farm stuff on my own, so mostly looking for a good solo class.

Have read a few topics on the forum and also looked over the ironwiki, but havent seen any topic that had any good info on what class would be considered better than the others for a new player with PvM as their goal (mainly so i can build up some currency to make future investments etc).

Looking forward to any help/tips :)

Ranger. Easy to level and easier to get a party in any TI once you hit 3rd class and get Arrow Storm.

Yeah, ranger is pretty cheap to lvl. WWSet and elven bow is all needed.

I'm pretty sure that shadow chaser is off-the-chart for newbie.

^ we are not debating as to who is better. Just suggesting start-up characters to newbie. Rangers are easy because they have only 1 main AoE to use i.e arrow storm,so not much confusion there. And yes simple equips to start with as a ranger. RKs need a bit dressing up before they can tank/AoE .

Rangers can't mob all that well, but they kill much faster.  The faster something dies, the less damage you take on average.  The trick is using a fly wing the SECOND arrow storm finishes casting.  You take very little damage, and everything dies in one hit.  You can chain this over and over again until you run out of SP.  My Rune Knight, on the other hand, can't kill quickly enough with bowling bash to mob efficiently.  If I had a veteran sword with a sword guardian card, that would be a different story, but that crap is expensive.

Rangers don't need a lot of expensive fancy gear to be wanted in parties and level solo, while most of the melee classes will require a large investment in gear to hold their own.  Also: the worse gear you have, the more money you need to spend on potions, which means you have less money to spend on upgrading gear.  It's a vicious cycle.

Pre-ranger, my advice is to max arrow shower out  fast since that's your main leveling skill and usable till you get to Ranger  then switch to Arrow Storm.   Hunterbow + hunting arrows + convertors make hunter/snipers pretty fast levelers with arrow shower.

also milk that low TI for Job points early to max out Arrow Storm.   (find a guild and offer free 50% tax exp )   this will maximize your damage out put in later TI and PVM.

I would say it all depends on your personal play style when playing any style of RPG. If you like to be up close and personal, go with Swordsman to start, and then either Knight, or Crusader. Depending on if you want to be able to support, or just attack.

If you prefer being in the distance and attacking, then yes, Archer is the way to go. And again, if you want to support, then Bard/Dancer(male goes Bard, female goes Dancer, kRO apparently doesn't like males dancing according to the gender specific class...but that's beside the point). Or go Hunter for even more ranged attacks, and ability to use traps.

Again, it all boils down to how YOU as a person plays.

why the hell would someone reccomend ranger to a new char?Unless you are gonna give him mora gear and elven bow he would be better off as a Arch Bishop(healer easy to get into party),Sorcerer(Support Striking, endow, and soul exhale easy to get into party)......but honestly unless you just party with friends till 150 you can lvl any char just dont expect to kill like someone who played longer. :heh:

When i started iRO, i started out with Rogue. Coming from kRO, it was pretty normal for me to start out with rogue and spend some time farming to gear up you're main character. But during the pre-renewal era, there were far to many bots(rogues too) and i had to compete with them. it was quite shocking to be back then. I would still suggest starting up with some character that can support you're in game supplies and gear, and get used to do you're daily quota. there are many ways of earning zeny nowadays (mora coins, joining guild for WoE&ET, etc etc) and its up to you for picking you're own class.

Ranger will always you're top choice due to its cheap gear needs, and high demand in any kind of party play. and also good at farming.

Rogue is also good since you can steal/then kill for double drop(such as great nature, and so on) and you can make quite a lot of money doing so to start up. (i did this 5? years ago)

Priest is always in demand in party, and always will be loved(especially female ones..........and you know why)

You see the problem with mob farming is... you actually need gears and a lot of potion money.

Um... no. Too bad sorcerers are actually sages before they become anything. And they are low level scholars before they turn into anything useful. It's a long and brutal road before they become sorcerers.

I went for Wanderer when I first started... And ugh. xD I love that class, but there isn't really a viable way to make zeny until you actually hit third class and can Severe Rainstorm some mid level mobs. I definitely wouldn't suggest Wanderer/Maestro for a starter class, unless you really like a challenge.

I was thinking GX would also be a good starter? Granted, you'd have to save for high tier gears down the road, but they are good for MvP, and easy as hell to level solo. Plus if you manually steal instead of gank (auto-steal on a Rogue) you can sometimes get better loots from what I've read. You can manually steal too on a Rogue, but I have a Stalker... And in my opinion their gears are pretty outrageous price wise, and they aren't the best for MvPs.

Edit: Just realized I had PvM (hence all the MvP talk) backwards, but still, they are great for that. x3

Starting out as rogue first actually isn't that bad.

(Note when I mention zeny, I'm comparing something  like 10k and 100k - actual scale for new players.)

I started with rogue when I joined. Had nothing at all. Pre TI you get a bit more money compared to other classes because you get to Steal things and NPC them. Leveling is a bit slowly since you try to finish off mobs one by one, but decent daggers/swords are incredibly cheap and affordable since you should be able to get ~200k+ as a thief from NPC'ing stuff.

When you enter TI range, you should act as if you're doing something but you actually just spend time following team and picking up loots (and using Steal skill) =p. Copy Frost Nova to easily help out team without engaging in battle. Now, since you aren't using Greed to pick up loots, probably no one will see you and complain about you.

The first 1m+ zeny I got was purely from NPC'ing loots - I saved up all the loots I had from novice -> rogue and sold them for 30 mil. I never missed the chance of picking up loots and NPC'ing them. My finger would be numb after every TI - I worked hard on it!

And after that, I used 30mil to invest and it turned into ~90mil, and then bought the most basic equips (Orc Archer Bow, Diabolus Armor, etc), which allowed me to help in parties as a Shadow Chaser.

Actually any class could pick loots and such. But if you're an archer, monk, etc you're expected to be in battle the whole time - no time to pick loots. As a rogue, you can just freeze the monsters and start picking loots (way more free time). Hopefully in low TI people are nice to let you do so, or just not even notice it. At least in Ygg, for the whole 3 months trying to get to SC people were nice and chatted with me when I looted.

So. It's an easier start to get your base zeny for your basic equips (pre 99). But if you still don't have the zeny when you're close to 3rd class, then it's a better choice to go Ranger, Sorc, etc as they're more helpful as a 3rd class. Might not be the best, but I'm just saying it's a totally do-able route you can go =D

You dont needs much gears, Just time, farming time.

You can hunt *4 hunter fly card.

You can obtain Glorious Suit.

With the 1st gear you can then farm and relax for HP/SP.

Then get better gears.

swordie is an easy first character .with bowling bash .. but you have to learn to use endure to deal with gutters as knight or spear dynamo.  that's why I would avoid recommending it as a starter.  the next really good skill for rune knight is ignition break and that takes 25 or so job points to get IB5...

ranger only needs about <16 job points to get max arrow shower...

rogue/shadow chaser has a good mix of skills and can copy IB 5 for some just 5 job points so they can level pretty quick.. and with intimidate 10, they can also get bowling bash 10 .. and sightless mind is pretty sweet.

--

I may have to recommend rogue -- stalker -- sc as a viable first character..  the auto gank is nice bonus for extra loot.

Asassin class isn't that bad to get started with. (Well, it is my first char anyways) xD

Hell with all the making zennies char crap and one-shotted aoe char, you can always farm zenny when you know the RO world better.

IMO, there is no best class, it is all decided by you, people can always manipulating your fresh mind and steal the fun of playing if you didn't enjoy the character that you are playing from people's suggestions.

Well what I wanted to say is,  go follow your heart and enjoy your first character and make friends as many as possible. Because it's really worth it. Then being a ranger and solo all the mobs away. I made a lot of friends when I first started playing because IMO thief is a reliable class (Im too cheap for white potions at that time), from there I enjoy and love this game until now and still keep playing. :D
