I) Introduction and history
Hello fellow visitors I'm Walten,
I landed on this forum randomly , and I never knew there were still so many other Rose fan artist around here, I loved the post from each of you, every one tries to do a small piece of art , I saw alot of funny stuff , alot of beautiful stuff !
I have been playing rose for some years , but I wasnt playing it on the official server. After a while i thought i could do more then just playing Rose and wanted to introduce my own models into the game!
I am a civil engineering student so i had some CAD basics , I started to teach myself modelling, using rhinoceros 3D , a nurbs modelling software : and after 1 week i was able to do this :
The problem was that once it was converted back to a mesh it was turned into 100 000 triangles wich was way to heavy for an ingame model.
So i decided to switch the 3d programm out and turned my self to a programm more adapted to graphic and game design: Blender http://www.blender.org/ , its free and open source( and ultra awesome )
Some people noted what I was doing and helped me to get to know how to make models "Roseready".
After 1 week i was able to do this mask that could be implemented into Rose:
But i still had no idea how to make textures or UV mapping.
Then I watched hours and hours of tutorial and in the end I was still unable to create my own textures from scratch, but i could use images and project them onto my model.
And now i finally was able to create good looking models: so i adapted some weapons from pictures into rose models:
I created over 20 other weapons this way, but i still was unhappy because i was limited to items wich i found pictures of.
So once again i had to refine my skills.
I finally found a way for people like myself ( people bad at drawing stuff) to do textures:
I asked other Rose fans to draw me a simple concept art
then i built a 3d model , UV unwrapped it, and I used blender to bake out the shadows for me:
this was the out put:
then I used this image in Gimp as a multiply layer and could just paint the base colours and the shadows would magically appear too! I could even use patterns and special gimp brushes to add nice looking extras!
And this is the end result usable in rose:
Some other people then saw my recent work and asked me to join their crew to create an amateur game for the Unreal engine.
I had to learn alot to be able to do models for the unreal engine.
Here is a test video from my work back then:
I also worked last summer to be able to afford a new computer for rendering and stopped doing models for the unreal game.
I then made the choice that i didnt want to be modelling for games anymore since its complicated because of the game engines , everything has to be rendered live in a game and the modeller has to use alot of effort for it to work properly.
Also doing models with a small amount of triangles and details seems to be a waste since my new computer could handle a few million triangles without a problem.
So I decided to do some HD Rose fan art!
