School is starting up again, and that means it's time to get your brain back in shape!

Every Wednesday, at some varying point of the day, I'll be posting some sort of weekly challenge for you to figure out. Each week brings a new puzzle: it may be a math problem, a riddle or something else entirely. Whatever it may be, you'll have to use a little (or a lot of) brain power to figure it out.

The competition is open to both servers! Chaos Renewal and Classic Loki players may both enter their answers. It may help you to know, then, that the answer to each challenge will be something that can be found on both servers.

Correct answers may win a prize at the end of the week. However, only a certain number of prizes can be given out each week and all correct answers are entered into the prize pool. Help others at your own risk!

Please do not post or PM your answers. Use the link below the challenge to submit answers!

Keep in mind that you only get one try; once you have submitted an answer, it is considered final!

While attempting to break into a safe on a recent heist, the Z Gang were stumped by the clues to the vault's combination.
That's where you come in, though! They've offered to give you a handsome reward if you can figure out the correct sequence to open the lock. They hand you a note, presumably with directions to unlocking the safe:

The vault combination is a four digit number. These clues will help you find it:

1. The third number is even, and the digital root of all four numbers is 6 (Ex. 1234: 1+2+3+4=10, 1+0=1, Digital Root=1).

2. The third number is the product of the first and second numbers, and all four numbers are in descending order (Ex. 9831, 7542, 5421, etc.).
3. The fourth number is the sum of the second and third numbers, and no number repeats (Ex. 1111, 1661, 4545, etc. are not possible).
4. The second number is prime, and three of the numbers are in consecutive order (Ex. 123x, x987, 765x, etc.).

Only three of the above numbered statements are true.

The Z-Gang also tells you that they've already tried all solutions that include 0 but were unsuccessful, so the vault combination must only use the numbers 1 through 9.

What is the four-number combination?

SmokieIdea_zps9afed806.pngLast Week's ChallengeSmokieConfused_zps942a489a.png

745.png

A Kasa is visiting Prontera. He looks at his World Map, assumes it is drawn perfectly to scale, and figures out that if he leaves from the exact center of town and flies in a straight line north to the middle of Aldebaran, the journey will be 32,585 feet.

He then figures out that if he flies west to the center of Rachel, once again traveling in a straight line, that this leg of the journey will be 65,170 feet.

Assuming the Kasa again flies in a straight line, how far will the journey from the middle of Rachel to the center of Veins be?

Answer should be rounded to the nearest whole foot.

Last week's prize:

ImpEgg_zps4e30d54f.png

Imp Egg

PoringDivider.png

SmokieIdea_zps9afed806.pngThe SolutionSmokieConfused_zps942a489a.png

The answer is 26,870 feet.

ConundrumSolution_zps21035aa8.png

Using the World Map and the distances given, we can assume that each area of the map is a perfect square, with each side being 6,517 feet (32,585/5 = 6,517 feet & 65,170/10 = 6,517 feet).

For those of you that are confused about the 5 and 10, there are five full square lengths between the center of Prontera and the center of Aldebaran. Likewise, there are 10 full square lengths between the center of Aldebaran and the center of Rachel.

We can then create a right triangle using the distance from the middle of Rachel to the center of Veins by going directly south of Rachel and then to the west toward Veins. These lengths come out to be 26,068 feet and 6,517 feet.

Using the Pythagorean theorem, we can then find the third side of the triangle.

a^2 + b^2 = x^2

26,068^2 + 6,517^2 = x^2

679,540,624 + 42,471,289 = x^2

722,011,913 = x^2

√722,011,913 = 26,870.28

x = 26,870

There were a staggering 15 correct answers this week! However, only five eggs are available. This week's winners, chosen randomly by survey number, were:

Pyroclastic, silentFuzz, amandabambi, Teacuplane and harlokjai!

Congratulations!

Please check your mail on the character you listed on the answer page after maintenance for your prize. If you need assistance with prizes, please PM Oda.

Just a disclaimer: The clues on both the original post and the survey were edited a few minutes after this thread went live.

I try to test everything and even run the problems by some CMs and friends to try and find anything I might have missed... In this case, I simply copy and pasted the wrong set of clues instead of the revised ones from after testing. To put it quite simply, the first set allowed for multiple correct answers while this set only has one correct answer.

Hopefully that puts everyone on equal footing. Sorry about the confusion!

Damn those are a lot of hints. I think you made this weeks too easy. There should be many winners. No wonder the prize is a Gangster Scarf & not an egg :P

Edit: It seems like more then one of them are wrong though ;)

4. The second number is prime, and three of the numbers are in consecutive order (Ex. 123x, x987, 765x, etc.).

Since you said the numbers decend don't you mean "321", instead of "123", in the example ;)

Is there a link to this quest?

First part... We'll see how easy it is. If you want full statistics, 15/65 answers last week were correct so there were still a whole 50 incorrect answers! Though a few people just forgot to round. :( I felt bad for them.

I actually want the Gangster Scarf myself... It's not on Classic yet but Oda said they could probably get it on there. Sad I can't enter the competition myself!

Second part all I can say is that it's written correctly.

Lastly, quest link? I dunno what you mean... To the actual Z Gang Quest? If you mean the random story I came up with to theme this week's puzzle, that's just me having fun with it instead of just going "HERE'S A PROBLEM, SOLVE IT". Kind of like the Kasa theming last week.

Plus it makes the prizes go with the theme somewhat. Kasa = Imp Egg, Z Gang = Gangster Scarf...

Next Gangster Scarf I get you can have :)

There is such a variance as to what Classic has & we do. It goes both ways & doesn't make any sense. I feel sorry for the people that play on Classic.

Yes I meant for the actual Z Gang Quest. As usual I haven't looked to see if it was in Wiki or someplace else. (Just being lazy) ;)

I like this weeks too.

Oh yeah & the people that got last weeks wrong, because of the rounding, probably submitted their answers prior to the posts explaining it. Not sure why the rounding was so confusing though. It's just basic math.

Ok, after three years of studying math, I feel really dumb right now and maybe I'm overthinking it, but... Are you sure? How in the world can the sum or product (clue 2 & 3) of two numbers get smaller (descending order), assuming they're natural numbers, not negative or fractions as is common for codes?

You shouldn't be posting infomation, that can help others, whether it's wrong or right ;)

morroc fruit wine is super easy to get in renewal with the addition of sara's memory instance (Zero has become a bit of a lush as a result of all the booze being sent her way).  You will encounter the Z-Gang and all their shenanigans if you participate in the Comodo spotlight quests!!

I've always liked this saying.

I have many problems. I hope some go away :P

For anyone else besides me that needs the link to the quest:

http://irowiki.org/wiki/Z-Gang_Quest

It doesn't say in the database where to get the Morroc Fruit Wine. Can someone please tell me?

Never knew there were Matchsticks either. The drop rate is good but never have seen the monster before. Probably because it only spawns one of them every 20 mins. That's almost as bad as Alice's spawn rate. Never saw it in ET. Is this a new one? Damn hardly any ever vended too? Anyone have one or two I can get please ;)

Chepet is an ANCIENT monster. Ever since Toy Factory was put in, it has been around. And it is in ET, floor 54, with Mayabi Doll and Marionette.

chepets have been around forever.  i had a matchstick from pre-re that i used for the quest.  morroc fruit wines drop from mobs in the sara's memory instance. While it's random chance, I do get a full set (4/5) each time i go in.

Only 3 out of 4 clues are the true clues.

So it's either one of those two or the other two that give us more confusion instead of an actual clue.

edit:Holy crap, you just pointed out the wrong clue.Free hint for everyone! :gg:
