I don't have HBO so I won't know until August - September. From the clips I have seen, there seems to be a bit of canned writing since they can no longer base it on the books. Their is a lack of subtle politics that has been in the last 5 seasons.

Digital release was a couple days ago. Pretty good season, but like I said fairly canned writing outside of major plot points. Last episode had the going around full circle vibe. It's like they went with appeasing the audience than going on the original plot, so it loses some elements that I think give the show a bit more impact. For instance there were no sacred cows. Jon Snow coming back and Ramsey Bolton's death seemed more for the fan than for the plot. There are also gaps to make the show run cohesively, much of those are the subtle intrigue going behind the scenes. Everything is telegraphed before it happens which is a bit disappointing. Still to get this show wrapped up in another 15 episodes, a lot needs to be sidetracked.
