I accidentally destroyed the cart pet which was gifted to us for compensation. I would like to restore it, but I don't think it is worth 500IM. I heard from old players that the first item recovery is/was actually for free. Is that true? If it is true, what are the steps to follow? Thank you.

Just an advice: If the car had bad stats don't buy recovery item!
Mrs Husky is able to has the same effects as the Car pet and her egg costs just 300 IM. In market you find Mrs. Husky for 2,5k from time to time.
So if you dont want to spent IM here are your alternatives

Yeah, thank you. For the stats; I hadn't opened it yet, it was still in its gift form, which I got from the compensation pack. I would have used it for the extra inventory slots at some point in my life, but it is not worth 500IM points to recover. And, I also got an email from the support saying that it is not free anymore for the first item. So, I give up, would rather buy more vault in the bank than recovering the pet. Have to suffer my own stupidity.

I'm late. (And "half-dead" '-')
If you're talking about the Pet which gives the Extra Inventory extension bonus, it does not have anything more that this.
You might rather want to wait for another "high-level" incident to happen. I only opened one until now, being fine with the amount of standard Extensions given.
