Hi there, I have low FPS (I really don't think it's server lag) and I've read some different solutions about this. Someone said to use an older GPU while others have suggested a directx wrapper. I have tried downloading "dgvoodoo" and I don't know what specifically to do after that. I've powered through this lag and I would just like to try and get it to run smoother as I find this to be a really good game. Is there any suggestions someone could give me? I think the dgvoodoo thing would work but any expertise is welcome. Thank you for your time.

Edit: I made a video of it and put it on YouTube. Am I allowed to post that video here?

Edit 2 (08/04/2019): This is late but I believe I've found a solution. I turned the resolution down (I think to 800x600) and had it stretch in full screen. The character looks like it stutters a little when they walk but there was less screen stutter/lag. I hope this helps someone. Have a good day.

Edit 3 (08/05/2019): I meant that the character looks like it's animation is stuttering but everything else on screen seems to be fine.

Is that the maximum value? RO seems to play smooth on higher refresh rate.

What isp  do you have ?  Cox cable and some others  the last week  have been pgrading services   download speeds ar not  afeted as much  its the upload speed.  i had randem or no upload speed at all fore a couple days   and had the same problem.  the ro severs will not receive upload inputs from you .or or will be delayed.you should test  tour speed and see if its stable.

The graphics are shuttering, it has nothing to do with internet speed.

However, if the character is snapping or have input delay such as skills execution is delayed then that's without doubt a connection problem.

My two TV's can only go up to 60hz but my monitor can go up to 144hz. I'm not sure if I have the right cable to use the 144hz though.

Edit: I don't think it's the internet as I've had this problem for months. I was just too lazy to put it off until now.

What you are experiencing in my view is a shuttering effect. Keep in mind, the known FPS problem reported this far is due to playing RO from Steam client.

See if any of the following help:

  • If playing on Steam try to launch the client directly from the folder.
  • Use a higher refresh rate as possible.
  • Browse your RO folder, look for dinput.dll, if the file exists delete it or rename it to something else.
  • If using any third party addons disable them then try again.
  • If on Windows 10, disable Windows featured Gaming Bar and the related.

RO is poorly optimized for the newest generation of gaming GPUs, if you have a profile setup that optimized RO I'd suggest to disable it or use default settings.

I can't think of anything else that would make RO run smooth if ever. Personally speaking, I get the shuttering effect too on a high end gaming GPU when walking by 3D objects, it has been like that for years.

Do you think it could be the cables connected to the GPU/monitors?

For a short explanation, Ragnarok runs on Direct3D 7/DirectX 7, which is a graphics API that was released in 2000. Yes, this API was already outdated when RO released in 2002, where we saw DirectX8 and early versions of DirectX9 already. Needless to say this API is heavily outdated these days. This change will cause the RO client to render through a Direct3D 11/DirectX11 wrapper.

But you wouldn't really gain much if you just bumped up the API version, right? You aren't exactly making use of any new features in the API, so why would you care? Well... modern Windows and computer hardware no longer support DirectX 7 natively. In fact, for the majority of you, unless you are still running an early XP machine, RO's DX7 is most likely being emulated by your CPU. That's right, your GPU is doing none of the work beyond being a bridge for your graphics display. RO is a CPU taxing game, by it's flawed design, it will consume an entire CPU core's processing power. So with your CPU handling everything, and only using a single core to do it, RO's FPS can be very choppy.

If the client used a more modern DirectX, your GPU would kick in and start doing some of the work for the CPU, lifting a heavy load off the processor and allowing your client to run more efficiently. As well as have a minor benefits that come with just having a more modern API.

^explanation aside, there are methods to make RO use directX11, try that.

Based on the info provided by Ashuckel, trying dgVoodoo2 returned brilliant results. It is like a whole new game now.

I'd say to give the application a go, all what you need to do is copy the appropriate .DLL files to your main RO folder then launch the game like normal. Your device security application(s) may flag the file but it is 100% false positive.

The latest version of dgVoodoo (2.6) corrupts some skill effects, though it results in noticeably higher FPS in game. Consider using an older version if you care about the effects.

I cranked up the settings with dgvoodoo and used the .dll's that came with it and the website .dll's. Things do look smoother and better, but I'm still getting the lag while I walk. I'm thinking it might be my cables or maybe my video card isn't getting enough resources. I do have 2 sound cards plugged in and one is in the second GPU slot. I feel like an idiot though haha. I did do a few things like turn off game overlays and turn off HyperV, so silver-linings I guess.

Thank you all for your help, I'm getting a new motherboard and CPU soon anyway so I guess I can try it from there.

P.S. Maybe there should be a stickied guide for dgvoodoo and getting it to run for RO1. Of course check with WP/game devs/GM's first before you do so hehe.
