The cost to maintain a current server as the classic with 200 players is less than 30usd compared to hardware / software, not counting employees, however, taking into account the team of GM's and administrators that we have, we can override that cost, they have not done their work for some time.

That is, 30usd monthly is too much for Warpportal to actually end Classic?

Could we get:

1) The missing cards and safe refine npc

2) Single castle/realm WoE till server closes
3) Bloody Branches and slotted gears in the merchant shop

by the next maintenance?

Thanks!

Aw unfortunate decision  :p_sad:

I was always impressed how you guys stuck in and hang around in Classic in the era of "we want more updates".

"Unfortunately due to the age of the server software, we can no longer support the Classic server."

There is no possibility to update it?  :hmm:

What about the effort of every Classic player?

No merge?

No compensation for who wants to move to another server?

This is a complete lack of respect and consideration with your players, WP  :ani_shy:

Btw I returned to the Classic last week since I moved to Re:Start (around 2 years). I was playing there because of friends and cause there's no 3rd classes there (I play with expanded classes, 3rd leaves the game unfair). My friends have stopped playing and the 3rd ones will be released. There's no reason to stay there. My opinion, Classic is better! Please consider a reopening or something.

Consider it from a technical perspective, which Ashuckel alluded to...

Since you are leaving the server software at its current version to support the 'classic' gameplay experience, the underlying code of the game is not being updated. Unless you can update the underlying code, you cannot move the application to a new server that runs a supported OS.

To use an example related to something I said in a different thread, think about Internet Explorer (which is built in to all Windows systems). In Windows XP you can run Internet Explorer 7 for example. They work great and have no problems. Now Windows XP is no longer supported, and the longer it goes without being supported the more security issues are discovered and not patched. The system becomes a security issue.

Windows 10, the new supported OS, only runs Internet Explorer 11. There is no chance to run any version of Internet Explorer that is less than that.

Moving everything from one to another becomes a costly problem. Yes, you can upgrade Windows XP to IE8, but nothing more than that. So you would have to have an in-between move to go to Windows 7 while running IE8, then upgrade to IE11, and then migrate to Windows 10.

If you think about it like that, you can start to see the complexity involved with what you are asking for.

Because of the state of the code in the Classic version, there is probably no good upgrade path to fix the server issues. The same goes with 'merging' the data from one server to the other - the databases are likely very different, with the Renewal database having new columns and tables that the Classic database never needed. You won't just be able to copy the contents of the Classic database into the Renewal database easily because of that.

Those are just a hint at the technical issues that would have to be worked out to even consider taking things from Classic and moving them to Renewal. It's unfortunate, but it's probably not going to be possible.

Hello and thanks for the explanation.

So, for security reason, is it dangerous to keep Classic?

What would be a good solution in your point of view?

Do you agree with me that ending this way, with no benefit for the Classic's players in other server, discourages anyone from continuing to play for WP?

Sad.

Of course, options for the Classic server playerbase should be offered, that is how you should handle it nicely. But WP proved themselves many times that they don't give a damn about their own playerbase. :)

it's also the most legal, even though the terms of service does imply that ownership over items are not ours and if one day they all vanish, nothing happens to them, in good faith they are expected to reduce damages and not directly leave us with nothing

especially if the decision of access removal is caused by an inability of the company to continue the service

tldr there are legal grounds for it if people are eager to pursue. luckily i havent invested heavy on ro nor am i from eu or classic to do so

I really hope warpportal can reconsider classic players, we do love Ragnarok but you can't just abandoned us.

Come on at least provide some solution to all royal classic players, we listening.

I just want to leave this here for you guys. People play on classic because they want to experience real nostalgic like the good old days. Sorry your server has to end and best wishes.

Sad.

Based on the note in the OP where they say "Unfortunately due to the age of the server software, we can no longer support the Classic server." I believe that there is some underlying technical reason that the system cannot be kept up and running. Referring to it as the 'server software' naturally makes me guess that it is the OS of the server, and if it is running an older version of an OS that is no longer supported by the manufacturer, at some point it will become a security issue if you cannot update it any longer.

*Side note - it could also be SQL Server. If the system is running MS SQL 2008 R2 for instance, that version of SQL is End of Life (EoL) July 2019. All prior versions of SQL Server are already EoL.

But that's just my guess. Without knowing the anything about the server itself, like what OS it's running or what 'server software' is being talked about, it is only an educated guess based on working in IT and supporting various server systems for as long as I have.

I do not think that this discourages anyone from continuing to play iRO. If the community that was playing Classic was really there because they wanted to have the original experience that the game provided before Renewal, then just telling them to move to the Renewal servers is not really a solution. The best approach would be to contact all the Classic users individually and ask them what they want to do. If the player wanted to move to Renewal, then the GMs could work with them to make accommodations that would ease their transition from one server to the other.

But if you go that far and make individual contact with all the players, you wouldn't post all that in a thread like this. Then it becomes a personal interaction with an individual user, and should be left personal.

That makes sense.

Yes, I agree with you. But is there a possibility of reworking and launching a new server? Updated though with modifications to resemble Classic?

Although not ideal, benefits on another server seemed to me more possible than a new server. Also, individual contact I don't think would be the likely solution too.

Probably I'm talking silly. Sorry about that. :heh:

About discouraging ... I mean, giving some better attention to Classic players would be cool. In the way they are doing I see it as a "goodbye" to the players.

I enjoyed Classic, I havent played a lot recently but occasionally hop on to play for a bit and considering how few active people I see on I can understand.

Thanks for keeping it running as long as you did. I still believe Classic could still be somewhat active with better decision making years ago, but everyone always has different ideas of what Classic is and it made things hard.

It was fun while it lasted. It wasn't perfect but I had some good times during the years I played there.

I did try renewal again, which was okay but not as fun (for me) as classic.

I guess my updated stat calc won't be relevant anymore but at least it was useful to some from what I'm seeing:

Thank you for using it!

Funny, I tried to log on to see the few characters I'd made there. My Mastersmith / Sniper / Stalker and couldn't even get the game to launch from a clean RO folder. Sad, but not surprised this nightmare had to end.

rip classic, the first couple months were the best.

server was dead to me about half a decade ago. at least you guys are finally giving it a proper funeral now.

i'd like to see a new server, renewal or pre-renewal doesn't matter, but with zero managerial mistakes. most prolly not gonna happen though so yeah

rest in peace iro classic. maybe rip thor in a couple months, rip chaos in a couple years. we'll see.
