I'm coming back to RO, starting completely fresh on a new account. I'm basically looking for a good initial class that requires little to no funding, and can level relatively easy up to trans and beyond. I was thinking or either Archer or Mage, though I've heard Wizards have a tough time leveling at higher levels.

Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: To elaborate further, I dun care about WoE or MvPing for this character. I'm basically using it to get a feel for post-renewal RO and to fund future characters.

Archers use traps and/or arrows. Neither are really expensive but the expense is there. Ranger traps can cost a fair amount due to the sheer volume you go through but for hunter/sniper traps, they are inexpensive and loots should easily pay for them. Aside from npc sold arrows, the others you need to get the materials to craft them. If you do go bow build then a decent overupped bow is not that expensive.

If you get flee and go trap build hunter/sniper you can get to third class with very little funding, other than the traps you use.

Mage class can level inexpensively, especially if you get a kahii spouse on another account for a hindsight build sage. But otherwise you can still get good mileage out of a heal clip - i got to 99 in the old days on my wiz without a single pot and even found an mvp card with it.

Thanks for the reply. After some further research, I think I may start off with a knight. Everything I've read said they are relatively easy to level if you go STR/VIT, and there are some good opportunities to make some money along the way.

The only real problem I see with a Str/Vit Knight is that they are a Mobbing Leveler. This means they will need to use quite a lot of pots to do so safely if your not wanting to rest all the time. BB FTW (Bowling Bash, For The Win).

I really feel that one of the more ideal first characters to use is a Agi/Dex/Str Rogue due to the stealing/Ganking and possible Mugging. The most expensive things you may need early on are a Pantie and Undershirt which are very helpful. Panties are ~100k and Undys are ~300k. The Free Eden Dagger you get is a pretty good standard dagger to use unless you perhaps buy a Elemental Dagger but thats only needed for later lvling. If you check the irowiki lvling guide I did most of the Thief spots and the Mettaling/Porcellios for the Rogue/Sin spots and feel it is pretty decent.

PS. I main a Wizzy. I know he currently seems to not be but he was my first character and got stuck for a while lvling due to lack of gear/parties, Finally 99'd just days ago during the Green Ale exp boost event.

Depends on the server. If you are on a server that's weathy, Rogue is good for obtaining items that can be sold on the market. If you are on a poor server, blacksmith as when you find higher populated areas where people do not pick up their loot you can greed a great deal of NPCable items.

Monk, because they obliterate everything while leveling. Undead damage & defense is massive, makes leveling very easy. PS, Funnest class I've ever played. Combos give more meaning to grinding. HOHOHOHOHO!

You have to care about something in the least as far as MvP, PvM, and WoE. Archers make themselves immediately useful as far as those go compared to the rest, the rest require a bit more attention and geareos, but not by too much. By the time your leveled or ready, you'll have remotely what you need to sustain good assistance.
