So, I just finished playing taking a short 30 min break. I was on the game today and needed help so I asked someone and they and there friends where so kind they gave me 500k zenys along with good weapons and a good place to lvl up.

People are kind and this game ROCKS!

I think you'll find the majority of people are quite friendly. There's only a handful who aren't, it's just that those ones tend to stick out.

And the nice ones tend to stay quiet, and the not-so-quite-friendly ones, as Kitten said, tend to stick out...

Nice people on RO? Must be a scam!

I do my daily contribution by buying tidbits of random things off newb vendors even when I don't need them (you can usually tell by what they're selling).

Running a non woe guild for noobs, I don't believe in free hand outs.

I always go out of my way to help new players if they're polite and show some initiative. One time I was playing my alchemist and found a low level swordsman who needed someone to tank him at orc dungeon. Tanking there is messy since the monsters change targets, so I supported him with geographers and aid pot instead.

In hindsight, I think I wasted a lot of zeny... :);

I think the best way to help a new player is with advice, not items or zeny.
You have to suffer a little to appreciate what you have.

I have helped people before, items, zeny, helping levelling up, giving them urls to ragial, the wiki and the healplz thing..
Last one I helped was a person who wanted a blob as homu.. I gave them quite a few embryos to get the right one..

The only thing I ever ask back for it, is that if they see someone that needs a hand and they are able to, that they help them with the same 'conditions' - in a whole pay it forward kind of way..

for me, it has to do more with how i'm asked. if i just get a random PM asking me for gears or zeny they get an automatic /ex and a HERP DE DERP response. if i find an obvious noob actually trying to play the game as it's intended and failing horribly then yeah, i'll toss them a VVVS mace or something, drop a few dozen pots or so and tell them where to lvl. even after 10 years, theres still so many dudes running around as female novices trying to sucker other dudes out of their zeny, preying on the hope of many a basement dweller of finding nookie on the internet. HERP DE DERP my friends, HERP DE DERP.

Being the recipient of a lot of help when I started back in 2003, I find it hard to ignore people who could just use a little redirection or outright assistance.

In fact, for me it's share and share alike. I was given some zeny during a dropping frenzy in Prontera, which the player who originally got it need not have shared with me because he got it fair and square. I turned around and gave that money out to others, because it didn't feel right spending it only on myself.

Eventually, investing in the players means you're investing in the game itself.

Lol, this thread became in a "gosh, im so good with noobs that i deserve a medal" thing :D .

I like to help new guys too, since i like to hang around in eden group i have that chance quite often, but i help them with advance player knowledge, game mechanics, class advice, job system (moving from novice to 3rd class... alot of new guys have questions with this) and so. Also if i have time help them with their gear quests.

I don't believe in giving them free stuff or zeny, only when someone need 500z for storage :) .

I'm actually one of "those people" that got handouts when I first started on Ymir just about maybe a month ago. Contrary to the stereotype, it made me want to play more. Starting with nothing was pretty rough, but I had kind people that helped me get on my feet. These ranged from gear donations to someone offering to pay for my trans fee.

With the better gear from the handouts, came better damage. It made the game more exciting for me. Going from doing 100-200 damage to 300-500 was pretty darn cool as a newbie. The gear and advice I got from players that took the time to do so motivated me to go out and read up on everything I could.

Even the person who offered to pay for my trans fee helped. They made me glad I went to Ymir. When you feel good about the community you play in, you naturally want to participate in it more. Thanks to the generosity of the players I encountered, I went from a lv1 with nothing to a 116 with some pretty nice stuff now, and lots more knowledge.

I realize that I maybe be an exception, and I agree it really does depend on the person. I just wanted to present a perspective from someone that wasn't the bratty newbie stereotype and how it can really change the game for them.

I don't know, when I see a shop with a bunch of low-end items, valuing under 1m total for the shop, I usually buy it out.

I try to be helpful with questions not items, because I know if they don't learn to get things themselves then they'll just be the next common beggar XD

Either way I try to be nice :3 although sexist statements tend to turn me into a really mean person :S or trolls... yeah... trolls are like my enemy xD

I'm interested to know what servers you all play on because it seems to me that Valk is less friendly. When I first started not long ago I had a heck of a time getting people to even respond to questions.

Me too. I see shops with names like "this crap will never sell" so I buy all but the cheapest item just to try to brighten their day.

Yes, Valk is less friendly as I can tell @__@; you would rarely find good people in there, on the other hand, in Ymir you'd find many morons too, but not as many as in Valk =P

Reminds me of the knight job quest, but I quite agree with this.
Nowadays everyone ask for free items/zeny/etc...
Back in my pre-renewal times when I first joined , I did everything alone,
yes it was quite hard and slow, but it was pretty fun at the same time.

From my experience valk is very friendly. Myself and friends always help out any newbies in need, with directions, items or whatever else.:)I see other people offering help too a lot. Honestly I rarely come across many jerks.

Kitten and I found a little level 6 aco sitting in payon a little while ago who had just started playing RO, said he was interested in learning the game and was desperate for some advice on how to get started/where to level. We gave him a few gears to help a newbie aco out (Rigid Guard, mace, etc) and gave him a few buffs and heals in Payon Caves level 1.

That was about 3 weeks ago-- he's now a level 142 Sura in our guild kicking ass in WoE and giving advice to other new and returning members.

Some of those new lost players just need some redirection. I shudder to think how many got discouraged by trying to level a 45 Merch with a +3 blink vital stiletto at poporings and wondering why the new hat they bought that adds 6 defense doesn't make a noticeable difference in damage taken, that otherwise might have survived the learning curve and been awesome geneticists/mechanics.

600/(600+5) = 99.2% damage taken, or 0.8% damage reduction.

I generally think the cutesy nature of RO attracts a friendlier crowd, or perhaps rubs a friendlier atmosphere onto players, but there's still some players who are awfully big jerks.

This video is the best example how to help out new players and low level characters

This was based on a older flash, made before the appearance of 2-2 classes.

Although it has it sad parts, this story is an example how people should help each other and learn the game.

Perfect example, very touching... the thief guild is indeed one of the most asked place to get.

So how many of you would dedicate an hour per play session to be a part of a "helping newbies" thing, where you could get some in-game swag from us for being so helpful? And I mean actually playing with them and showing them what is going on, so they can get into the game and upto lvl 70 of so within a week?

Is an idea that needs refining yet but I think it is a good start to an idea.
