Let me give my opinion about the show.
I joined the FiM fanbase after ep 4 had aired. I ran into a youtube poop about it and figured I should give the original a chance (I like cartoons, it was colourful, why not), and I liked it even tho the other generations mean NOTHING to me. Yes, the first (and second) ep seemed like the show was going to be a very weird MLP/Sailor Moon crossover (which is why you should never watch ONLY ep1/2 as a first watch, Winter Wrap Up is soo much better for that), but the next eps turned out to be very nice. I just wonder tho, If one has not yet given it a chance, you must think it's all girly and cuddly?
That is so wrong. Think Tom and Jerry, piano's/anvils falling on heads, pony's going as insane as Ren and Stimpy PLUS alot of colours, music and song ^^. Some of my friends agreed in it's awesomenes, others disliked it, and some are afraid to watch it because they know they are gonna like it ( =fail
). My roommate eventually began to make fanart and make me an avatar, which eventually ended up here.
MLP- FiM may have had a slow start, but once the imageboards actually had to put bans on ponies (sometimes only due to sheer volume, sometimes due to severe trolling) THAT was when the fanbase had grown to what is it now. Please do know that it is NOT just /c/ that is the fanbase, it's a PART of the fanbase. There are more places to go nowadays.
Anyway it was already mentioned but the creators of the show have worked on several quite succesful shows and even better, they try to listen/talk to their many fans. It is known fact that /c/ has joined Da JUST for the fact that Faust (who WAS the executive producer) was replying to the community there, even tho /c/ members hate DA. They expliain choices and listen to suggestions. Quick example, an animation error was made in the first episode (or so they claimed), which gave a background pony a wall-eyed look. That pony has eventually made her return as a background character, because the fans loved her so much. A smart move.
Another great thing about the show? The music. They have brilliant composers (namely Daniel Ingram, who has already wordked on several shows), who are not only good in making quality music, but are even helping some of the fans to improve on getting better in making better fanmusic.
So, you wonder why the fanbase is so strong? Creators and fans are actually in close contact,
that builds a strong loyalty.
Anyway the show was (and is still) intented as a family show. Focused on children, yes, very much, as they try to teach the value of friendship and much more. But they tried to make it bearable for parents or a big brother and sister to watch, and have succeeded.
If it's not directly the show you like, it can be the fanbase around it, the fanart, the lolpics, the music, the poops, etc. I don't know every single kids show that airs in the US. What I do know is that I PITY the Dutch children, for having to watch things like monster buster club or even Mr. Bean the animated series... (if you like that, I'm sorry, I don't, examples have to be made). Some things just just drain your IQ by watching it, and anyone who has seen MLP-FiM will agree that this is not one of those shows. Recently we got KinderNet back (Children TV if you will) that actually air some of the older cartoons like 'Sinbad de Zeeman', 'Dommel', or (imo the BEST cartoon EVER created:) 'Alfred Jodocus Kwak', that are actually worth watching. It's all a matter of opinion (and alot of Nostalgia) of course, just giving mine.
The other thing is, and that may sound iffy to you, everyone I know that likes the show (or is open to the idea of liking it) are actually REALLY friendly people. As where people who shoot it down THE SECOND they hear you say it wthout giving it a chance are often people I cannot/do not like to hang around with anyway. It's like people in RO who call you noob for asking a question/making a mistake INSTEAD of offering help/constructive critisism. Lifestyle? Choice? Sure. In the end it's a good thing you can choose your friends for yourself.
And now for 1 more picture, since this ramble is in a spoiler tag anyway:
I have actually said most of this in several PM's I received over the message system asking me what was with my avatar/sig, where did the ponies come from, why do you like them? Got some really good conversations out of it as well. But it's good to finally post it out in the open
.
I just have to say 1 more thing in response to someone... Being the scholarly logical in a VIDEOGAME forum is never the smart thing to do.
Especially mentioning it. If you make clear logical posts people will know that you are educated anyway.
