One of the giants and pioneers of the videogame industry passed away last week. Kyoto born Hiroshi Yamauchi was the President of Nintendo from back when they were still making Hanafuda playing cards until the early 2000s.
The great grandson of Nintendo's founder, he early on saw the importance of forging a new future for the company he was inheriting. Though Disney branded cards were doing well for the company, he believed that selling hanafuda wasn't in the cards (so to speak) for the future of Nintendo. Briefly dabbling in producing different ventures (including Taxis, instant food and Love Hotels), he eventually settled on toys. Their first success was the ULTRA HAND grabber, designed by the late Gunpei Yokoi, a maintenance man who eventually would create the original Game Boy. This convinced Yamauchi that toys were the way to go.
Yamauchi had a knack for prediction, and he saw the rapidly increasing sophistication of electronics would be ripe to combine with toys, and saw the American arcades with their crazy "video games" as a possible future for the company. After their early games failed to translate to the west, he tasked a young Shigeru Miyamoto with developing a new game using one of the unsuccessful prior games as a base. Based slightly on characters from the main characters of Popeye(!) Miyamoto's baby would become the Donkey Kong we all know and love. It was on like, well you know.
Even despite the (Atari ET licensed game caused) video game crash of the early 80s, he believed in the home video game console market, pushing for the development and eventual export of the FamilyComputer. The NES was sold in the US as a toy, since it included a neat looking but mostly not useful ROB robot.
Yamauchi would continue to run the company through it's golden age, purchasing the Seattle Mariners and retiring in 2002. He had a very interesting managerial style, setting up multiple competing divisions to create innovation, and was known for his often controversial statements on gaming, RPG players and much more. The industry would not have been the same without him, I'd highly recommend reading more on this amazing man's life!
