Fellow Cal Polytechnic University State University Architecture grad and beloved parody songsmith, The man who would become "Weird Al" was born on this day in 1959 to Nick and Mary Elizabeth Yankovic, who raised young Al in Lynwood CA.
Though he wasn't related to the famous Accordion player Frank Yankovic, a crucial turning point in his life was when his parents bought lessons for that instrument from a door-to-door salesman.
Idolizing novelty song acts from the midcentury like Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer and many other acts featured on the Dr Demento novelty radio show, Al was developing similar parody songs while growing up and learning the accordion. A chance meeting with Demento during a high school speech gave Al the opportunity to get one of his songs played on the syndicated radio show.
Al officially became "Weird" as he earned the nickname during his time as a DJ at his college radio station, proudly adopting the wacky persona that would persist through his entire career.
Recording a parody of "My Sharona" in his radio station's bathroom, Weird Al's "My Bologna" became a hit on Dr. Demento's radio show, but it was with his parody of Michael Jackson's BEAT IT and accompanying video that he would achieve national fame. In a time before Youtube, Weird Al became a viral hit.
In the years that followed Weird Al has parodied many different artists and styles, and has adapted to the changes in popular music. It's something of a rite of passage in the music industry, with many like Kurt Cobain stating that "they only felt like they had really made it" once they had a song popular enough to get a parody.
Just as the novelty song greats of the past influenced Weird Al, you can see his influence on a generation of new recording artists creating parody remixes and playing popular songs in a new and weird new way.
