I'm used to being thrown into a world in a non-linear fashion instead of following these slow quest trails. o_O
Is it necessary to do the starting area?

You can ignore the quests and go your own way. No one's forcing you to do the quests, they're completely optional.

If you do as ZeroTigress suggests, you'll find yourself severely underleveled (unless you aren't venturing into other zones upon landing in the starting area).

But, it would be a painful grind. That was my observations anyway.

You can skip them if you want to (you just won't get the starter gear and exp that the npcs give you).

Yeah leveling is completely quest dependent unless you want to grind for days, but its also fairly fast as you can max your character in a week or two and get into the good stuff which is Raiding and PVPing, maybe even WoE in a few months! If you're not already I suggest you try reading the quest dialogue sometimes its quite amusing.

I wouldn't reccommend skipping them honestly =/ The EXP they give is too nice to pass up.
