Monks are pure tanks, and my understanding from feedback in party is that their damage is low compared to Assassins and Rogues. Thieves are pure DPS, so imagine they break monsters down faster but can't take nearly as much damage as a Monk in battle.

This seems like an odd question. You've got DPS classes vs. a Tank class. So really you should decided whether you want to be a Tank or DPS? If you choose Tank then be a Monk. If you chose DPS then you have to choose between Rogue and Assassin. Personally I'm working on a Rogue for a few reasons. I enjoy the general feel and theme behind Rogues. Along with their awesome skillset. Not to mention that I hate the the Assassin's shadowform. I think it looks really silly and you're pretty much forced to be in it all the time because of the boost. Also prefer the look of the Dual Daggers over the Claws.
I can tell you that Monks are pretty fun. I've got one up to level 27 and their are freaking beast. After job change I utilized my skill reset and got ready to take on Izlude Cave and Sea God. With the help from a very useful priest I was able to tank both dungeons just fine. Don't expect a whole lot of damage output however as you'll lack a lot of strength at level 25.
That's my two cents hope you figure out/figured out what you want to play.
