Both are viable options. I originally put only one point in shadow armor but changed to 5 after a reset and love it. Even in PvE having shadow armor to handle some AoE or add damage is great and the level 1 CD is just too long to do it every time you want. Sometimes I'd ask myself "I know I'm going to take some damage now but should I save it for something else?" Many times when I died with shadow armor on cooldown I felt it would have gone differently if I'd had it.
Dropping poison weapon isn't my first option of skills to sacrifice but if you're in a party with another thief class who has maxed it and/or has better gear it won't matter. It will only matter if you're the only/strongest thief class in the party. Really though I'd get rid of mark of genocide to keep poison maxed. The overall damage increase if you're the only thief in the party is higher from poison and if there are two then there's a chance the other has MoG instead so the party won't lose any effectiveness.

This is true for most cases for 5 person party. However late game you will be in 10 person raids rather than parties, and in 10 person raid MoG increases overall party dmg by more than poisoning, since poisoning only affects your own dmg, whilst in a typical raid you have 4 main dps as well as 2 sorcs and 2 tanks contributing somewhat to dps. If you count 1sorc+1tank equivalent in dmg to 1 dps, then MoG increases dmg by 1.6% for 6 equivalent dps non-dot skills. Poison increases dmg by 5% for equivalent 1 dps dot skill. And most of your damage will come from your non-dot skills. The overall raid dmg increase will depend on the raid makeup/skill builds/skill level of raid members/gears so I cannot give a calculation, however in most if not all cases MoG will increase raid dmg by more than poison (slightly by maybe 0.5-1%). Most of the raids I've been with prefer only having 1 melee dps (usually raid dps consist of 1 melee dps/2 rangers/1wiz) but if theres 2 then its best for 1 to have MoG and the other poison.
On the other hand poison will help you more in pvp than MoG. Again the differences are slight. So whether you want poison or MoG is up to personal preference.

If you are no PvP Why you max Shadow Strike? and got 1 point on Mark of Genocide???. That's the worst thing an Assassin could do, you loose precious points on other skills.
Think it twice.
