As the title says, I sold the Red Gem in the Ring of the Wise King quest. I couldn't put it in storage, it had weight and I wanted to trans - so I sold it, assuming I would be able to dig it up again later.

But, that doesn't seem to be the case. Every time I click on the spot where I dug it up, I receive a message saying:

-Small pile of earth-
-which you dug up the Red Gem-

I can't get it to say anything else. Also, the Rune Midgart's Magician npc now asks me where the gem is.

How do I fix this or get the gem back?

Run the quest with a throwaway character. You only require one copy of the ring per account, as you're able to trade it between characters on the same account, and store it.

Submit a ticket at https://support.warp...in/Default.aspx or do what was said above if you are only trying to get to Dicastes since Sapha's Visit only requires the ring and no prereq quests. If you are trying to get to the Nidhoggur Instance through Guardian of Yggdrasil you will need to submit a ticket to get the red gem back.

I have the same problem, NPC'd the red gem years ago on my character, now regretting it. 

 

You can't run the quest on a different character and store/drop the gem, I tried. You have to submit a ticket and wait for the GMs to recover it.

I was pretty sure there was more than one place to dig up the gemstone =/ Perhaps I'm wrong.

They mean the Ring of Wise King accessory. It can be stored and used by other characters in same account. It's not character bounded.

If you submitted it recently it might take a few days with the holidays and all that just ending.
