Excellent posts by everyone, my YouTube subscribe list is already getting out of hand! x.o
I'll never understand how people can listen to those. The voices are ear aching.
Oh, I completely understand why anyone would say that, really. I considered most Vocaloid music to be terrible (not for me) for a long time because all I had seen were popular, older songs. Not only am I really picky about the music, the artist must also be proficient with Vocaloid software and tuning. I've found some of my favorite DDR/IIDX/Bemani artists doing Vocaloid stuff now, which is amazing.
I still can't watch the music video without getting freaked out >.>;;
Ahhhhh, I watched that one before. I think I'm gonna cry again from the feels ;__;
Ah yes, Bacterial Contamination has quite a disturbing music video. Definitely mind-fudged me a few times! I also found a darker remix from some music searching app on my phone. +_+ Also, one of the things I definitely wasn't expecting was that kick RIGHT IN THE FEELS for a few music videos I've found. I have to be careful now, lol!
just going to list whats on my foobar for bands instead of posting tube videos , i would use a spoiler tag but i don't know how :/

Vocaloid, Vocaloid, Vocaloid, Vocaloid, I'VE FOUND MY PEOPLE!!!
I like Mitchie M's songs, the tuning there is just amazing. I mean, wow, no wonder Freely Tomorrow was the fastest song into the Hall of Legend. akuno-P's songs are great too, but it takes a while to get through the Evillious Chronicles. Although, I really like listening to the Seven Deadly Sins and Story of Evil series within that series. Mostly, I listen to the songs on Project Diva F and Extend (those are the only CDs I can get a hold of at the moment), but I sometimes have youtube up while I'm grinding.
Online game Addict's Sprechor really fits the situation when I'm grinding. Due to Miku flipping the bird in the art, I put a spoiler. There's some screenshots from various games in the vid too, so try to find them all. I already found an RO screenshot of what I believe to be somewhere in Aldebaran.
Spoiler
Hello Planet is also a good song to listen to, especially with the game-like music.
Black★Rock Shooter is a good song to grind on too.
I also like listening to UTAU covers, like Len and Tei's Magnet. (you'd think that would be an awkward moment, Tei being a yandere in love with Len and all...)
Or Teto's version of Odds & Ends.
The original's good too.
Sekiranun Graffiti is a great listen in my opinion.

For those MVP hunters, it's not Vocaloid, but
Haha, I have Hello Planet, Black★Rock Shooter, Odds & Ends, and Sekiranun Graffiti too. I don't remember when I started listening to Akuno-P's songs xP (think I started with the Seven Deadly Sins ones too). I have a bunch from 40mP, kaoling, wowaka, AVTechno, etc too. A lot of the songs I listen to I found through related videos when I was searching for Vocaloid songs on youtube or from looking up the composer's other songs xD.
I only have some UTAU songs, with a few of them being sung by Namine Ritsu:
Spoiler
I listen to Attack on Titan songs too (E.M.A. and Jiyuu no Tsubasa are a couple of the songs I like )
The thing I hate about the whole vocaloid thing is the voices don't even sound normal, let alone human.
That's usually the major gripe I have with a large amount of Japanese songs done by female singers I've heard, they just sound too young and annoying. I just can't believe it's popular. I don't get it. lol
The only Japanese song with a lady singing I can stand is Love Song from Hokuto no Ken 2.
This song makes me weep T_T
It's... beautiful.
And I don't even know the lyrics besides I DON'T LIKE LOOOOOOOVE, CUZ I LOVE YOOOOOOU.

It all depends on the one working with them. It takes some (perhaps a lot, depending on the voicebank and if it's UTAU or Vocaloid) work to get them to sound more humanlike. In these cases, my good friend, Miku sounds very humanlike.

For the singers, I believe it has to do with moe. That and the ridiculous stuff the music industry in the states is putting out.
