Universal has redeemed themselves for Jurassic Park 2 and 3. :U

Jurassic World feels like a true sequel to the first Jurassic Park. Both films retained the spirit of mankind being punished for messing with nature present in both Jurassic Park books. Although Jurassic World is not an adaptation of either books, the story itself is based on the books (if that makes sense).

I know a lot of people find the velociraptor training to be a bit farfetched, but they do preserve the concept of the dinosaurs being wild animals. And wild animals, even tamed and trained, can still be unpredictable compared to domesticated animals. This was demonstrated with the velociraptors changing alpha leaders upon encountering indominus rex and made the dinosaurs feel very realistic in that regard. Us humans see that as the velociraptors being stupid, but they're just pack animals doing what pack animals do naturally: side with the strongest.

Fangirl alert: when Grey said that they needed "more teeth", I just knew which dinosaur they were going to let out and I couldn't help but squeal with joy when tyrannosaurus rex entered the fray. XD But then indominus rex started overpowering t-rex and suddenly I started getting flashbacks of JP3 when the stupid spinosaurus beat the young t-rex. Then suddenly Blue (the velociraptor) jumped in and the crowd went nuts with Blue and the t-rex tag-teaming against the indominus rex. 8D Such a blast to see them beat the stupid hybrid.

That aside, I can't help but applaud the filmmakers for making such a good balance of CGI and practical effects. I don't mind CGI if done properly enough to blend both the live-action elements and the fake elements together seamlessly in a way that it's hard to tell what's real and what's not. That is the artistry of filmmaking I feel gets half-assed in a lot of movies and it shows very obviously. Despite the atrocities of Jurassic Park 2 and 3, the film series as a whole has done a pretty good job of not overusing CGI unlike a lot of films out there nowadays. So good job, Universal.

Overall, if you like the first Jurassic Park movie, you'll like Jurassic World just as much.

domestic receipts also came in well over expectations, with Universal's estimates of $100 million being more than doubled for the 2nd largest American debut of all time (in between Avengers 1 and Avengers 2, because Disney).

Didn't get a chance to watch it this weekend so I'll be hitting the theaters next weekend.

Saw it today, full of many issues that I could rant about all day, especially the ending....

 

But I still enjoyed it and recommend it. Should have been made instead of Jurassic Park 3 (titles makes no sense, not a park, NOT A PARK).

They tried covering their own script butts in areas and some relationships felt forced *cough*, even some decisions that should have been made earlier weren't because "money", dear god what is $27,000,000 nowadays when you own a freaking dinosaur park, let alone as it tears through what would be hundreds of millions of other assets, offsetting the reputation etc.

But aside from those bits, it was a good movie.

My biggest cheeses were with the don't tell attitude of the hybrid's DNA, which should have been addressed multiple times in detail as it would have helped explain a lot. The other bit was the raptor, trex and pratt's fist bumping ending.

But those are just knitpicks. If I were to ever show the Jurassic Park films to someone, it would be Jurassic Park -> Jurassic World. 2 and 3 never happened.

Agree on the forced relationships. The first Jurassic Park did that better, oddly enough.

From a business standpoint, killing a dinosaur that they sunk a good amount of time and resources into is something that they can never get back. So in that perspective, it's natural for them to be more interested in trying to capture it alive than killing it outright. And considering how park attendence can plummet if they don't come up with anything new (in terms of dinosaurs to show off), they could suffer losses in the long run.

I assume the reason for not letting people know about the genetic makeup of indominus rex is simply because they don't want information to get out that they're creating new dinosaurs instead of just bringing them back to life. It's like the equivalent of a normal zoo creating chimeras of various animals just to get people to visit. It's more to protect their PR reputation of being a zoo of once-extinct dinosaurs and not a circus sideshow.

I'd also agree that 2 and 3 were just a bad dream and never existed.

caught it this weekend. theater was still super crowded and I think the movie is on track to be the fastest one to ever break $1 billion (might've already done it, this was a few days ago).

movie was quite enjoyable, and I didn't feel like any of the lighter moments were out of place(jimmy buffet grabbing his drinks at his margaritaville while the pteranodons attacked made me lol).

one part I didn't get was why they didn't bother tracking that sucker BEFORE going into the pen. I'd suspect the guard would hear or see a 50 foot tall dino trying to scale the enclosure, and there were people outside working on actually making the pen taller. it escaping that way would not have gone unnoticed. It's a pity that Jurassic World ended up imploding because Bryce Dallas Howard couldn't be bothered to have Jake Johnston stop organizing his dino minifigs long enough to use his "FindMyDino" App until after people had already entered the pen.

Plenty of easter eggs in this movie, apparently the T-Rex was the same one from the original movie. The DNA guy was also a nice touch. I read an article that pointed out that the Jeep Wrangler the kids restarted was the same one that brought John Hammond to J-Park in the first movie (#29).

As far as Doctor Wu not divulging the provenance of the I-Rex, I think there's far more nefarious reasons; it's not like they were asked to let the public know, he wouldn't even tell the Mr. Mazrani what went into a creation that he technically owns. From the shenanigans that were happening between the InGen Emergency Ops guy (Vincent D'nofrio) and Dr. Wu, they were intending to weaponize their creation, and the I-Rex was basically the prototype. D'nofrio himself mentions how great it would be to have a smaller version of the I-Rex working for them. In this case then it would make sense for them to keep the genetic makeup secret, it'd be like revealing how a nuclear weapon works to your enemies.

Well the rather major difference between a nuclear weapon and a dinosaur is that a nuclear weapon can be dismantled and stopped, but a dinosaur can't. Not like people can strategize how to counter unpredictable animal behavior.

oh they stopped Echo just fine with one well-placed shot from a SMAW. Consider that dino dismantled

but it's more a question of being able to reverse bioengineer your weaponized dinos; short of capturing a live specimen, i can't imagine it would be easy to create your own dino warrior if you only had a couple of dna samples collected on a battlefield. why make it easier for your enemies to build a dino army of their own?

So while I was waiting in the Christchurch domestic terminal on route to Bali I came across this machine:

 

I sunk $1 NZD into it and won the block game first try, which gave me super crane strength and 900 attempts at getting a prize. I got this bad boy:

 

 

I believe it is the Indominus Rex and it is 36cm in size.

 

But yeah, a pretty cool toy, can hang out with my other crane spoils including Mew, Dreamworld Tiger, Gizmo, Micky Mouse and Crash Bandicoot haha.
