Hey fellas. So I've been looking around and to my understanding the game underwent massive changes recently that made all guides obsolete. I'm in a bit of a bind. I really want to start playing, but I'm scared of gimping my character, and I probably won't waste any time restarting.
So my biggest request would be a build. I'm looking to go to sura eventually if the game holds my interest for that long, so anyone who has advice on building an Acolyte to eventually role monk through sura I'd really appreciate it.
I'm gunna start up an alt while I wait for responses, and pardon me if I'm asking too much, just say so. Another acceptable answer would be to let me know if I can just do my own thing and it will be okay. Or if I can get to a certain point where I can still respec for free, in which when I have a better understanding of the game I can make a build myself.
Anyway, I really appreciate any responses! Look forward to seeing you guys in game!

Well as a monk you have a few build options.
basically you can be agi/combo type
Or the fisting/Oi/TSS type.
Or a combination is possible.
basically you need to decide if you wish to rely on FLEE, or Potions/Heals.
As a new player I would go with a agi/combo build.

An Acolyte Class is not really the best class to start with. But it is manageable and can be fun.
Iro Wiki has builds for various Monk Types - these are most likely still set for pre-Renewal, but remain good guidelines for builds.
Something you'll need as an Aco Class is a good amount of SP - which'll drag down your STR during setting your stats. Also, be aware that - as an Aco - you will be asked by various players "heal plz" or "buff plz" quite often. It can get annoying, actually ..

Suras are actually good but takes very long to get to that good point. Monk and Champs don't compare to well to other classes anymore and also I would say that Sura skills and the possible stat builds that come from them do not compliment monks and champs too well. Example the Spirit monk/champ is no where near as good but an agi-less Sura is very good. I even wasted champ skill points on acolyte skills. If you really want Sura I would say go agi monk, then slowly go raging palm strike champ. This is without any resets, I think they do offer some sort of reset, look into that.

Yeah, i would not start with a monk as first char.
If you're going to anyway...
For monk builds, word on the street is that agi combo builds are where it's at for leveling - a stark change from pre-renewal. Most people seem to be talking about resetting to go agi combo for leveling, because the alternatives aren't as good as they were. OI got nerfed by the changes to "icepick" type damage effects, and TSS got nerfed even harder by the cast time formula changes - so spirit monks are out, and there's nothing that justifies fisting, so gfist monks are out too (at least for monk - maybe as champ if you want to MVP level, but i don't think that's practical)
