Welcome to the Ralis Conundrum!

Every Wednesday, at some varying point of the day, I'll be posting some sort of weekly challenge for you to figure out. Each week brings a new puzzle: it may be a math problem, a riddle or something else entirely. Whatever it may be, you'll have to use a little (or a lot of) brain power to figure it out. These puzzles may require knowledge outside of Ragnarok! Anyone is capable of finding the answer, but I cannot guarantee you will always know what to do if you have little to no understanding of Ragnarok, computers, math, science, etc.

The competition is open to both servers! Chaos Renewal and Classic Loki players may both enter their answers. It may help you to know, then, that the answer to each challenge will be something that can be found by players of both servers.

Correct answers may win a prize at the end of the week. However, only a certain number of prizes can be given out and all correct answers are entered into the prize pool. Please do not try and use multiple accounts to get better odds! We check account connections. If you're caught doing this, you will be automatically disqualified from present and future competitions... Including OTHER events on the forums as well.

Correct answers that are not chosen for the weekly prize will gain points depending on how many people get the correct answer! When you've saved up 20 points (points will be kept track in the 3rd post of each thread), you can PM me any time during the week to trade your points in for the current week's prize. You may only trade in points once a week for a single prize, so keep that in mind if you're trying to save up for a "better" prize. Winners of the weekly prize may PM me by the end of the week to opt out of the weekly prize, instead receiving the amount of points awarded as a participation prize for that week, up to a maximum of 20.

Please keep in mind that the theme for each week is not always a factor in figuring out the puzzle. This does not mean that it will never have an impact, but rather that you should not assume that you must travel to a location or that the answer must fit the theme given in that week's conundrum.

Prizes are always subject to change based on Oda's discretion.

Please do not post or PM your answers. Use the link below the challenge to submit answers!

You may freely adjust your entry until each week's deadline.

I don't consider search engines cheating. You will never find the answer directly, but always use your resources!

Please be cautious when asking questions about the puzzle of the week on the forums as they could end up being hints for others. You are always welcome to PM me with any questions you may have.

Week 26: Smart Darts [ 3/4 - 3/10 ]

RCDarts_zpsbvqzjbvx.png

Since the Week 5 Conundrum, the owner of that bar in the southwest corner of Prontera has been getting a lot more patrons. So many, in fact, that he's come up with a new contest! On the back wall of the bar he's placed a dartboard (it's pictured above). The values of each space around the outer perimeter, as well as the center, have been marked on the board. Each space closer to the center acts as a multiplier (x1, or face value, for hitting a space on the outer ring, x2 for hitting a space in the middle ring, and x3 for hitting a space in the inner ring). The center circle is worth 100 points, but that's kind of pointless: the goal is to win a prize by scoring 91 points with three darts. However, there's a catch. There are three colors on the board, and you can only hit one of each color. In addition, the score from the red space must be the largest number while your score from the green space must be the smallest number (after multiplication).

What is the total value of the three numbers you must hit if they were added together at face value (before any multiplication from hitting middle / inner spots)?

The competition ends Tuesday, March 10th at 11:59 PM PST! Good luck!

Unfortunately, coming up with new conundrums is sometimes challenging. That, or I just completely forget about them due to other commitments or a busy workload for the week.

If the pattern of which weeks Conundrums have and haven't been posted continues, what date will the Week 100 Conundrum be posted on?

Last week's prize:

SmokieIdea_zps9afed806.pngThe SolutionSmokieConfused_zps942a489a.png

The answer is 10/5/16.

The 1st conundrum was posted on Wednesday, 8/20/14.

The 25th conundrum was posted on Wednesday, 2/25/15.

There were 189 days between those two dates. We can now repeat the pattern by skipping forward to this week (there was some confusion about this. I suppose I should have stated to assume that week 26 would be posted on time. However, there is really no other way you could have assumed it would happen, otherwise there would be an infinite number of answers):

The 26th conundrum is being posted on Wednesday, 3/4/15.

The 50th conundrum will be posted on Wednesday, 9/9/15.

The 51st conundrum will be posted on Wednesday, 9/16/15.

The 75th conundrum will be posted on Wednesday, 3/23/16.

The 76th conundrum will be posted on Wednesday, 3/30/16.

And finally...

The 100th conundrum will be posted on Wednesday, 10/5/16.

There were 16 correct answers this week, and the five winners are:

laksalot, MorseCoder, bunnywunnny, NyuX and hakkun!

Congratulations!

Everyone else that answered correctly but did not get selected for the weekly prize have earned 6 points this week!

Your prize will (eventually) be mailed to or in the inventory of the character you listed on the answer page. If you would like to opt to not receive this week's prize and instead receive points equal to the participation prize, please PM me before the end of the week.

Please note: the two-week guarantee thing wasn't working too well as Oda has a lot of other responsibilities that come before getting prizes out. I will try to post in the current week's thread what prizes have been given out, but please be aware that you will get your prizes eventually, it just might take a few weeks. If I've posted that prizes for the week you won have been given out and you don't have yours, then THAT would be the time to PM Oda or I. Sorry about the inconvenience!

I was pretty lenient with answers from last week by the way. Some people didn't answer in the exact format I asked for but I still accepted answers due to the way dates are written being very different for various parts of the world. :)

Good luck on this week's puzzle. Please let me know if you have questions. I tried to go VERY in depth with directions since there was a bit of confusion last week, but I may have gone overboard and made things worse. :P

You probably have it right. This looks like an easy one intentionally. Ralis wrote in a previous thread that he cycles between easy and difficult puzzles. I could be forgetting a conundrum, but I feel like three of the past four were difficult in terms of number of correct answers, and the one that wasn't didn't have many more correct answers compared to those three.

Yes, this one was not meant to be quite as difficult. Last week's seemed to stump a lot of people (or they did the math incorrectly) as there were actually about 50 responses.

I could be wrong, but I'm guessing the error was +6 instead of +7 three times or +188 instead of +189 three times.

I made a minor error in the last week's puzzle. The answer I got was 10/2/16 instead of 10/5/16.

I actually arrived at 10/2/2016 as well. Here is my methodology:

Week Date Date Difference
1 8/20/2014
2 8/27/2014 7
3 9/2/2014 6
4 9/7/2014 5
5 9/14/2014 7
6 9/23/2014 9
7 9/30/2014 7
8 10/5/2014 5
9 10/15/2014 10
10 10/20/2014 5
11 10/23/2014 3
12 11/4/2014 12
13 11/11/2014 7
14 11/18/2014 7
15 11/26/2014 8
16 12/3/2014 7
17 12/10/2014 7
18 12/18/2014 8
19 1/8/2015 21
20 1/14/2015 6
21 1/23/2015 9
22 1/27/2015 4
23 2/4/2015 8
24 2/11/2015 7
25 2/25/2015 14

Instead of assuming that week 26 is posted 7 days after week 25, I am just taking the difference between week 1 and 2 and adding that to 2/25/2015, and continuing on from there. If you extend this out to week 100, then you would end up with 10/2/2016. What is wrong with calculating it this way? Here there are no assumptions made, I am restarting the cycle based on the first difference that existed.

In a repeating sequence, it repeats the first entry when the sequence starts over. In your case, you used the difference in days between Week 1 and 2 as the first entry, rather than the first entry itself. The result was that you repeated the second entry when the sequence started over.

Let's simplify and say this is the sequence:

1 2 3 4

After a second repetition, it would be:

1 2 3 4 1 2 3 4

Your solution yielded:

1 2 3 4 2 3 4 2

not quite. By using week 1 to week 2 difference everything is shifted up. Week 50 is 9/9/2015. Week 75 is 3/22/2016. Week 100 is 10/2/2016.

Also don't know what you mean by the actual difference being 6? 2/25 + 7 is 3/4.

What's your time zone? I based the dates on GMT-8 (same time zone as server and Ralis). Conundrum #2 was posted at 10:23 PM GMT-8 on Aug 26.

EDIT:

I understand your reasoning, but the problem with basing the sequence on difference is that the first entry wasn't taken into account. The difference for the first entry can be written as Week #1 - X. The difference for the second entry is Week #2 - Week #1, and so on. The value of Week #1 - X had to be assumed. Week #1 was posted on a Wednesday, so I assumed that the first entry in the repeated sequence (26, 50, 75) would also be posted on a Wednesday.

Here's another way to look at it:

Week 1: a known date

.

.

.

Week 25: a known date

Week 26: Week 25 + (Week 1 - X)

Week 50: Week 26 + (Week 25 - Week 1)

Week 51: Week 50 + (Week 1 - X)

Week 75: Week 51 + (Week 25 - Week 1)

Week 76: Week 75 + (Week 1 - X)

Week 100: Week 76 + (Week 25 - Week 1)

Your solution was:

Week 1: a known date

.

.

.

Week 25: a known date

Week 26: Week 25 + (Week 2 - 1)

Week 49: Week 26 + (Week 25 - Week 2)

Week 50: Week 49 + (Week 2 - 1)

Week 73: Week 50 + (Week 25 - Week 2)

Week 74: Week 73 + (Week 2 - 1)

Week 97: Week 74 + (Week 25 - Week 2)

Week 98: Week 97 + (Week 2 - Week 1)

Week 99: Week 98 + (Week 3 - Week 2)

Week 100: Week 99 + (Week 4 - Week 3)

EST. I get the reasoning behind the correct answer but you could technically take the first week into account with a difference of 0. However that is impossible since that would imply Ralis posts two conundrums on the same day, which is why I ruled it out.

If you'd like, I could put together a simple survey page where you'd just have to select the acceptable responses and it'd automatically pick the winners and keep score.
