voting via social media is hard. why?? people could just ask for people to like the work to boost votes therefore disregarding the quality of the art itself. :/ not everyone cares to browse other works to compare the quality and if the work adheres to the theme.

Upvoting artworks on the forums is a little more secure since the CMs can spot spamvotes. Can't really monitor that on social media.

imo too many rules are unnecessary most of the time, they can be hard to follow and limit creativity, and they reek of anal retentiveness. not qualities i want when entering a contest for fun

and let's be honest, i love RO but these are contests for temporary loading screens and cosmetic hats usually. not cash or scholarships or small islands, a majority of these don't even affect permanent ingame content. if a contest doesn't run optimally i think everything will still be ok

the stuff currently in the OP is mostly alright and common sense (your entry should be your own work) but i wouldn't go too far beyond that. category slots are...okay, but still wouldn't eliminate jealousy or complaining, no amount of rules or categorization ever will. i think the community already does a pretty good job of coming up with inclusive, creative contests where pure illustrative skill isn't necessary to win. i'd like to see more of these than stricter rules!

If contest hosts want strict or loose rules, that's their choice. This thread isn't meant to encourage one way over another, just to clarify the consequences of leaving certain loopholes open and provide judging options.

The contest that Dawnte and I are currently hosting includes more categories, so hopefully more people can participate without too much fluff.
I agree with simple rules and I agree with Zero too about kind of making guidelines that newer hosts can follow.

I'm personally comfortable with setting rules and dealing with people that get upset.
