D:
A Bloodring.
Could totally put it into Niflheim if they ever add more field maps around the town.

Episode 12:
After escaping the goblin explosion, the party contemplates their next move.
"Well that ended with a bang," jokes Luyuriel. "Shall we head back in again? Obviously they're aware of us so we're going to have to tread even more carefully. I really want to get to the library and the Cadorna house is right over there, too. "
"Sure," says Phuu.
"Nuts to that. I'm going to stay back here a while," says Xeiyrr, clutching his weapon cache. "Go on without me; I'll catch up later."
"You and your loot," sighs Luyuriel. "Have at it. Let's go, Phuu."
Luyuriel slinks back into the next area while Phuu follows silently. The kobolds appear more alert than when the party first came into this area. However, they don't appear to have noticed Luyuriel and Phuu's presence at this time. The two of them head to the unexplored house next to the one with the kamikaze goblin and find themselves in yet another bunk bed-adorned house; this time there were ten bunk beds arranged in a similar fashion to the previous buildings. In addition, there was a ladder in the back wall that leads up to a trapdoor. Luckily for Luyuriel and Phuu, the entire place was unoccupied, allowing them to explore it more freely.
"There's more and more beds with each building we go into here," notes Luyuriel.
She goes up to the ladder to examine it and determines that it was stable enough to support her weight. She then climbs up to the trapdoor and discovers it opens upward to access the roof. There appears to be no lock or latch for it. Carefully, she opens the trapdoor to see what is up on the roof and spots the backs of four kobolds with bows scanning the square where the well is. The roof itself has a very slight pitch and a low parapet wall on the perimeter. Luyuriel silently slinks back inside the building.
"Four kobolds up there," she tells Phuu. "Think we can take them out?"
"We could try," says Phuu. "But once the first kobold goes down, the rest will be alerted."
"Obviously," agrees Luyuriel.
She opens the trapdoor slightly again to see if the kobolds on the other roofs are close enough to hear cries of distress. Based on previous commotion they've heard when they were running earlier, sound carries pretty well throughout the area.
"Guess no go for that," determines Luyuriel, thinking she could sneak up behind them to take them out without them being assisted by kobolds on the other roofs. "Unless we find ourselves an archer class. Or... we could lure them down here."
"That could work. Hide under a bunk and make some noise," suggests Phuu.
The elf gets off the ladder to get a rock. "Might as well test my new sling skills."
She quickly fashions a sling together using sheets and some twine. With rock and sling in hand, Luyuriel ascends the ladder and opens up the trapdoor just enough to give her space to use the sling. She slings the rock at one of the kobolds in hopes of knocking it out, but the stone whizzes past a kobold's head and it looks around obliviously.
"Noise distraction it is," declares the elf after going down the ladder to get another rock.
The next rock flies wide and none of the kobolds seem to notice that one.
"... Or not," sighs Luyuriel as she gets another rock.
"So much for being proficient," says Phuu as he hides under a bed.
"Well, I'm new at this," counters Luyuriel, going back up the ladder with another rock.
"Maybe you should simply whistle and they'll come down," suggests the human.
The next rock misses as well. Despite this, Luyuriel was determined to have something happen, whether it be the kobolds following them down or distracting them enough to kill them from behind. After getting back up the ladder with a fourth stone, Luyuriel was able to land a solid hit on one of the kobolds, damaging it slightly. She quickly flees under the trapdoor and hears confused jibbering from the roof. She peeks through the trap door and sees that the other three kobolds are looking around with their bows drawn. Without a second thought, Luyuriel pops up through the trap door, makes a taunting face, and drops down the trapdoor. She lands on the ground and quickly switches from her sling to her quarterstaff, ready for a fight. They can hear a ruckus on the roof now.
"Phuu, get up from under the bed," says Luyuriel.
The human priest slides out and up from under the bed and readies his mace. Suddenly, the trapdoor flies open and they see the kobolds gathered around. Arrows fly down into the room, but all three miss and arrowshafts clatter on the stone floor. The kobolds move away from the opening and Luyuriel and Phuu hear more yelling.
"Oh boy..."
Luyuriel grabs Phuu and runs outside to hide, realizing that the kobolds have called for reinforcements. They head left and an arrow catches Luyuriel in the thigh from across the square, causing her to cry out slightly. Just to the left is another alley, where there is a door to another building on the right. Ahead the alley intersects a street, and across the street is the ivy-covered stone building they came to before. There is another doorway into this stone building, north of the locked one they failed to pick before.
Thinking quickly, Luyuriel goes for the closest door on the right and checks it for traps in case it was rigged. In the meantime, kobolds gather at the entrance of the alley and fire a volley. Phuu takes an arrow before they open the door, rush in, and shut the door behind them.
The two of them found themselves in a single room that looks like the remnants of a house. There is one bed toward the back with some simple furnishings and kitchenware. There is a single window on the western wall and no other doors.
"Well... that worked out," pants Luyuriel.
She takes out the arrow from her thigh and grimaces as she lets out a silent cry from the pain. She then hobbles over to the window and sees the same street and ivy-covered stone building they found before. There is no activity on this back street. The window itself has a simple sash lock and is big enough to fit through it with minimal effort if she chose to do so.
Luyuriel goes back to the door and listens, hearing soft chittering on the other side.
"Well, it doesn't look like they're trying to get in so I guess we're safe for now," declares the elf.
After a while, the sounds outside the door ceases and the activity in the back street remains lacking.
"They know we went in through the door," says Phuu. "They are probably laying an ambush as we speak."
Luyuriel quietly opens the window and slides through. Outside, the ivy-covered building is ahead. The alley is back and to her left now. To the right, the building continues and the road follows around the corner. Luyuriel looks carefully around to the left to check for kobolds and notices that they're now on the roof, waiting above the doorway with large stones in hand.
"Well, you flung a stone at them; now they are one-upping us," whispers Phuu.
Luyuriel tries to climb up the building, but to no avail. Slinging rocks at them wasn't an option either as the parapets give them 90% coverage.
"So much for sneaking up behind them and smacking them off the roof," mutters the elf.
The architecture is too similar along the area for variance allowing better conditions. However, the road that they're on circumscribes the large ivy-covered building. Knowing that there is the other alley to the south, Luyuriel and Phuu decide to take another direction to escape with no more injuries. Rounding the corner to the left, they see another road intersecting the one they're on to the right. On the left is another door to the ivy-covered building. They check the door for traps and then go inside to find themselves in a large open room. The hall is filled with rows of writing tables and high stools. Rotted mounds of parchment litter the floor. A barred door opens onto the street. Huddled in the corner is a wild-eyed human, his clothing torn and tattered.
"Greetings?" says Luyuriel cautiously.
"Is that you, Oda?" blurts out Phuu.
"Gah!?" the man stutters as he rocks and gibbers.
"Don't be alarmed. We are not here to hurt you," assures Phuu.
The man quickly scurries further into the corner.
"You sound like you've been in here a while," says Luyuriel.
"He is wrapped in fire and so cruel!" screams the man. "Don’t go there! Don’t go on the hill!"
"Who?" asks Luyuriel. "What hill?"
The man cackles wildly as he scratches face and draws blood. He then bolts through the open door and disappears into the streets outside.
"Alrighty then," exclaims Luyuriel in astonishment.
The two of them examine the building and find that there is a hallway that intersects this room to the east and west. There is also another room adjoining this one that's just to the left of the eastern hallway. After listening to the ajar door for noise, Luyuriel and Phuu go into a room that was once furnished as a simple apartment and study; it is now a shattered ruin. Books and parchment litter the floor.
"Something tells me we may have stumbled upon the Mantor's Library," declares the elf, recalling the library from her map of Phlan.
They begin to look for anything that references the wizard poisoning the river, the necromancer of the keep, and Cadorna, as well as a Tyranthraxus. Sifting through the literature at a reasonable pace, they don't notice any specific references to what they were looking for; it is all disorganized clutter. Luyuriel's eye does, however, catch a particularly well-bound, heavy volume with gilded edges.
"Ooh," exclaims the elf.
Picking up the tome, she looks it over and finds that the title is... Manual of Bodily Health. Disappointed with a deadpan expression, Luyuriel calls over her human companion.
"Hey Phuu, found a book for ya," she says to him.
"Aren't you the one getting hurt most of the time, Lu?" counters Phuu.
"At least I haven't fallen unconscious," points out Luyuriel.
Phuu takes the book and starts perusing through it hoping to find ways to keep Luyuriel and Xeiyrr alive. Unfortunately, it's several hundred pages long, with tiny print. It would take him a few weeks just to get into it.
"Take it with you, Phuu," says Luyuriel. "If anything, you can whale it on someone."
"That will be the irony of it," says Phuu as he packs away the 3-pound book.
"Who said words never hurt?" jokes the elf.
Leaving the study, they are now close to the eastern hallway, which ends at a barred door but it also branches off to the south. As they head south, the hallway reveals small wood paneled carrels on either side of it. They seem to each hold a single desk, furnished with writing materials. The ones on the right of the hallway are a little larger than those on the left. The ones on the left are mostly empty, the parchment moldy and inkwells dried out. There are nine on the left, all in similar condition. The larger ones on the right, of which there are only three, have a greater variety of material but are also in a state of decay. Sifting through the materials, Luyuriel finds some sheets of gold leaf; seven sheets total. She puts the sheets into her satchel.
"Might be worth something," she tells Phuu after the priest gave her a look.
At the end of the hallway, there is a door ahead and another to the right on the western wall. The door on the right led to what was once a peaceful contemplation garden for use by the scholars who visited the master of this library. In the center is a large pond, now swampy and thick. The rest of the garden is choked with weeds and only the small paths of rats remain clear. It is quite large, probably a third of the square footage of the entire complex. There is a door nearby to the left, on the southern wall. They see another door in the distance ahead and to their left on the western wall.
Before entering the garden, Luyuriel and Phuu decide to quickly check out the last unexplored door in the hallway. There they find a storeroom, which held all the writing and illuminating supplies of the library. Although there are stacks and stacks of things that look like they should be valuable here, they are either worthless or crumble and split when handled; the inkpots are dry, the quills brittle, et cetera. In addition, it seems that there are five kobolds living here, all of which look up at them and beg for mercy.
"Why are you here?" wonders Luyuriel, sensing no threat from them.
"Please leave us be," spoke up one of the kobolds. "We do not want trouble."
"You... don't work for the boss?" asks the elf
"No. We are outcasts. We did not want to join the army," explains the kobold.
"What is the army for?"
"The boss. To conquer the lands."
"Tyranthraxus?"
At the sound of this name, the kobolds shudder in fear.
"Please, don't speak that name," says the kobold.
"Do you know how big his army is now?" continues Luyuriel.
"Don't know now. He gains new followers with each passing year. The ogres and fire giants follow him now, too."
"How much of the land has he conquered?"
"Most of the Northern lands, that we know of. He does not want humans resettling Phlan."
"Why not?"
"Doesn't want a foothold for resistance."
"Welp, kind of too late for that," declares Luyuriel. "Do you have names?"
"Not that an elf tongue could pronounce," responds the kobold.
"Well, I guess we could recognize each other enough," determines Luyuriel. "Thanks for the information. Do you guys need anything?"
"Do you have food?" pleads the kobold. "Sooo hungry..."
"Can you conjure up something, Phuu?" Luyuriel asks her companion. She then remembers something as Phuu goes through his spellbook. "Do you guys know anything about the potions that the army has?"
"No," answers the kobold.
"Nope. That's a Third Level Spell," says Phuu. "All I can do is purify food and water."
"I think I have some sandwiches I nabbed from the inn before we left," says Luyuriel, going through her satchel.
She finds a few and gives it to the kobolds, who eats them up ravenously.
"Be wary of the garden," warns the kobold afterwards.
"What's in there?" wonders Luyuriel.
"Stay away from the green slimes," the kobold clarifies.
"Okay," responds the elf. "Thanks again. Hope you guys can keep out of trouble."
Luyuriel and Phuu emerge back into the hallway.
"So should we cut through the garden or just traverse to the other side via the hallways?" wonders Luyuriel.
"They warned us about the green slimes and we don't know what exactly they are," notes Phuu. "Better to be safe than sorry."
"Okie dokie," replies the elf.
They backtrack through the hallway and end up back in the main scribe hall they entered originally. Across the way is the other hallway, heading west. Going into the other hallway, they see three archways on the left with a bronze plaque above them. The first read Reading Chamber, the second is Entrance Hall, and the third is another Reading Chamber. From here the hallway turns to the south on the left.
They go into the first reading chamber, which consists of a large room full of tables. Scattered about on each are various candelabras with burned-out tapers and moldy books. Most of the books crumble at the touch and the ink is faded and illegible. The tables are stout hardwood; plain, but functional and in good condition. Seeing nothing of value in here, they head over to the entrance hall, a large entryway similar in size to the reading chamber. The doorway here is easily ajar, half-rotted off its hinges. There are no furnishings here, only frescoes on the walls of learned men and the heavenly patrons of arts and learning. All in all, the frescoes give a feeling of peace and contemplation. The ajar doorway leads back into the street. The second reading chamber is very similar to the first one; nothing particular catches their eye here either.
With that done, they go back out into the hallway and head south. On either side of the hallway are rows of alcoves full of bookshelves. Above each is a plaque denoting various topics: Philosophy, Rhetoric, Mathematics, History, et cetera. Luyuriel looks through the History section to see if any information could be gleaned from it. This section includes biographies, court histories, and geography. There is little or no distinction between myth, legend and reality, so the material is often quite confusing. A few titles catch her eye, however:
Lex Geographica; this is an atlas drawn by the great mathematician Tomarus. In the collection is a map of Phlan and the lands to the north. The work bears no date, but is over 200 years old. Naturally since that time, there have been changes both natural and man-made, reducing the total accuracy of the map.
The History of the North; this is an inaccurate and highly colorful account of the northern lands. Paging through the book, Luyuriel finds all sorts of colorful exaggerations, obviously wrong; other parts seem quite accurate. There is one passage of particular interest:
Ten days' ride north of the Varm is a barren and dead country called the Lee-wai, land-in-pain or land-of-caused-pain. Further to the south this place is know as the Tortured Land. It is said to be an evil place, shunned by the Riders. They speak little of this land but yearly during Ches they make a trip into its heart. There they go to adorate the spirit of a glowing spring. This they have done for ages and so shall they do for years to come.
"Could this be related to the well?" wonders the elf.
The Grand Historian’s Records of the Arts of War; the binding on this mouldering old book crumbles at a touch. This is a single volume of a massive work dealing with the history of warfare from before time was even recorded (such records being of course possible through magical means). In it there are innumerable little mentions of this group defeating that group and being attacked by another group who in turn are attacked by a fourth, etc. There are accounts of abductions, failed alliances, broken treaties, petty squabbles, diplomatic intrigue and more. The book’s tone is strongly moralistic, attempting to set forth the proper principals of governance in times of warfare. It is also very anecdotal; from the crumbling pages comes the following passage:
At this time their ruling the Twisted Ones was a powerful general named Tyranthraxus. He strode before his armies cloaked in flame... and led the Riders out of the waste. At his hand the kingdom of Barze was conquered. Turning south he led his army to conquer the Horreb and the Vane. Tyranthraxus was a cruel man and leveled all that he had taken, murdering the princes of these lands. But the flame that surrounded him consumed him, destroying his body. Freed of its shell, it flew among the men of his army, lighting on each and claiming it. It was then when Baron Schodt imprisoned Tyranthraxus in a vial of water which shone like the light of day. This he sank in the watery depths of Lake Longreach, defeating the armies Tyranthraxus had raised.
"Might be dealing with more than we can chew, Phuu," Luyuriel shows him the book and points out Tyranthraxus in the text.
"Yep. Seems like he can burn all of us to a crisp before we even lift a finger," agrees the priest. "But then again it says his body was burnt, so was the flame Tyranthraxus or the man who died?"
"Well, he's either still in a vial of water or he's already taken up another body," concludes Luyuriel. "It's possible he's hiding in the well. It's pretty much the only place where he can hide his flaming-ness."
"But the crazy man warned us about the hill with the fire. So maybe someone set him free," points out Phuu.
"His body's gone, but his fiery spirit still lives," says Luyuriel.

With so many things going on, I thought it may be helpful to itemize the more important happenings that are known to the characters. I skimmed the session notes, but I may have still neglected something. A couple of these are new.
Job postings from the city council:
Wanted, party to clear the slums.Wanted, scouting party to check the condition of Sokol Keep.- Wanted, party to recover Cadorna family heirlooms from the Cadona Textile House.
- Wanted, party to head the re-conquest of Sokol Keep, so a garrison can be stationed to secure the harbor.
Personal requests from Porphyrys Cadorna:
- Gather information on Tyranthraxus.
Job postings from The Church of Il-Mater:
- Wanted, party to recover the clerical relics that were stashed in the Temple of Il-Mater before the fall of Phlan.
Rumors about town:
- Growing number of undead in and around the Valhingen Graveyard.
- Contamination of the river is originating from the experiments of a deranged hermit on Sorcerer’s Island.
- "The Boss" has spies and operatives working within Phlan.
- Monster presence around Kuto’s Well particularly heavy. Some suspect it to be a stronghold or cache.

Episode 13:
"Guess we should finish up here," declares Luyuriel. "Lest we camp out here."
They check out the Philosophy section quickly. This section includes natural philosophy, theories of art, and supernatural sciences. Nearly all the material is dry reading, but there is a scroll entitled Fyerdetha’s Discourses On Power. This scroll is a study of supernatural sources of power, which interests Luyuriel.
“Fountains and pools hold great power that can only be reached by performing proper ceremonies. Most sure of these is immersion, for in this way the bather surrenders himself to the spirit of the water. That spirit or some portion of it thereafter enters into the bather, whereby he gains great powers. Woe to the weak-willed whose spirits are sure to be consumed by demons that put even the strong at great risk. Yurax holds that the Falls of lxce are greatest of all these. Morden writes that the Pool of Radiance is greater still.”
After discovering this useful find, the two of them head on over to another alcove that is particularly cluttered and disorganized and another small room that appears to be a private office. They examine the cluttered alcove to find that the wall has collapsed in places, allowing the elements to badly damage the books and scrolls stored here. Fortunately for them, this room was devoted to Rhetoric. Unfortunately, a basilisk has made its lair here.
"Talk about a book worm," jokes Luyuriel.
"We found Professor Worm. This must be Bifrost Tower," adds Phuu.
"Try to blind it or else it'll turn us into stone," warns the elf.
The basilisk is seven feet long and moves on four pair of legs. Phuu attacks the Basilisk with his mace, which glances off of its scaly hide. It snaps at the priest's legs, wounding the man significantly. Luyuriel goes after the basilisk with her quarterstaff and smacks it, but it doesn't look to concerned. Phuu hits it with his mace again and the reptilian creature snaps back; the priest barely manages to avoid its jaws. Luyuriel goes after it with her quarterstaff again, but misses. She begins to feel lethargic after catching the basilisk's eerie gaze.
"And I'm dead," declares Luyuriel as her body stiffens. "Yep."
Phuu attacks the basilisk with his mace and it begins to thrash in a rage as it continues snapping at him. It manages to wound him again.
"Got any petrification protection spells?" wonders Luyuriel as her condition worsens.
"I don't think so," responds Phuu. "I have a charm spell but works only on humans and mammals."
"Well then," says Luyuriel nonchalantly. "Nice knowing ya, Phuu."
The elf's flesh turns an ashen pallor and everything goes black for her. Once Luyuriel becomes a full statue, Phuu tries to run away from the basilisk into the hallway. The basilisk snaps again as he turns, but he avoids it. The priest makes it back into the hall and dashes back towards the entrance. The basilisk doesn't appear to pursue him as he ran.
Phuu tries to head back to the inn to meet up with Xeiyrr. By this time it's getting dusky as the priest makes his way out of the library and into the area around Kuto's Well. The kobolds are no longer waiting on the rooftop with stones. He manages to pass through the area with the rooftop archers and back to the slum section where the guards are stationed. This is where he last saw Xeiyrr when the group parted ways, but the drow is no longer here. From here Phuu makes it back to civilized Phlan before the stockade gates are locked for the evening.
At the Cracked Crown, Phuu asks for Xeiyrr, but it seems he hasn't returned there. He asks the innkeeper if he has seen any adventurers beside them.
"Sure," says the innkeeper. "They pass through all the time. Is there a particular individual you're looking for?"
"Have you come across any wizards by chance?" Phuu wonders anxiously.
"Hmmm. Can't say that I have, lately," responds the innkeeper. "What exactly are you needing a wizard for?"
"My friend Luyuriel got petrified when we ran into a basilisk," explains Phuu. "I'm in need of someone who can undo the spell."
"Ah. You know, the church of Il-Mater still operates here," recalls the innkeeper. "They may be able to help. If not them, I suppose you could gamble on procuring a potion in the market."
"Thank you," says Phuu as he hands over 2 gold pieces as thanks.
"Good day, sir," the innkeeper bades goodbye.
Phuu heads out to find the Church of Il-Mater. After a short walk about town, he locates the temple of Il-Mater, a fairly small and rudimentary building. There are two clerics tending to the property.
"I'm in need of a way to undo petrification," Phuu says to the clerics. "Can you please help me? Or point me to someone who can?"
"Oh. Petrification?" responds one of the clerics. "I'm afraid that's beyond our abilities. The bishop could probably help."
"Can you take me to him, please?"
"He's a busy man, though. He's in a city council meeting now."
"Ah! Do you happen to know when he will be free then?"
"Maybe in the morning?"
"Very well then. I shall arrive in the morning. Do I have to make an appointment in advance?"
"That can be arranged," says the cleric, scratching in a ledger. "Bishop Braccio will be expecting you at 8:00 am."
"Thank you. Have a wonderful evening," Phuu bades goodbye.
With nothing more that could be done, Phuu heads back to Cracked Inn for the night, handing over 5 gold pieces to the innkeeper before heading to a room.

Episode 14:
Phuu awakens at the Cracked Crown and proceeds to inquire about mercenary contracts. He finds himself at the council chambers, where several classified listings are posted.
- Smoe, the gnome mage, offers his services for 50 gold per day, plus 20% of any treasure found (rounded up in his favor).
- Misau, the half elf bandit, offers her services for 70 gold per day, plus 20% of any treasure found (rounded up in her favor).
- Uther, the human paladin, offers his services for 50% of all treasure found (rounded up in his favor).
- Kain, the human barbarian, offers his services for 50 gold per day, plus 20% of any treasure found (rounded up in his favor).
- Sarah, the elf ranger, offers her services for 20 gold per day, plus 20% of any treasure found (rounded up in her favor).
"What is it that you ask of me?" asks Braccio.
"My Lord. Please pardon my intrusion," greets Phuu anxiously. "I was told you know of a way to undo Petrification. A friend of mine was turned to stone by a basilisk and I wish to save her."
"Hmmm. I see," says Braccio. "I'd be willing to offer my assistance, in exchange for a favor."
"Anything you wish," responds Phuu. "As long as it does not go against the principles of the Church, I will see to it that I fulfill it."
Braccio begins his explanation. "Our original temple, across the river in Old Phlan, has been overrun by orcs. If you were to assist us by driving them out and returning a cache of clerical relics and magical items hidden there from years ago, I'd be in your debt and would be obliged to assist you in this matter. The band of orcs is led by a half-orc cleric, who has defiled our sacred ground and given it over to the worship of the dark god, Bane."
"I'll see to it now," Phuu answers quickly. "Thank you, My Lord."
Phuu takes his leave and heads off back to the council chambers. He inquires for one of the mercenaries at the front desk and a courier is sent to fetch Kain the barbarian. Within a half hour, a burly human wearing bear skins greets him.
"What's the job then, priest?" wonders Kain.
"We are to clear out some orcs that have taken over the temple across the river in Old Phlan and retrieve some artifacts for the church," Phuu explains straightforwardly.
"Ha. Is that all?" Kain grins and shrugs. "It's your gold, my friend. What shall I call you?"
"You can call me Phuu," responds the priest.
Kain throws back a bottle of whiskey. "We'll be off then!"
Hesitantly, Phuu goes with Kain towards the bridge connecting the slums to Old Phlan. As they drew closer, they see a group of four orcs waiting on the other end with bows. Once they step out from the cover of the city walls, the orcs draw and begin to fire. Kain draws his longsword from a scabbard at his waist. There is an audible crackle as the blade is exposed to the air and a faint blue wisp of chilly vapor issues forth. He charges across the bridge through the volley of arrows. Phuu follows after him with his mace ready. Kain avoids the arrows and closes in with Phuu just behind. The orcs abandon their bows and attempt to draw their swords. Kain manages to kill two orcs while Phuu bashes in the skull of another. The fourth orc withdraws into the walls of the temple.
Phuu and Kain are now on the east side of the river. The outer walls of the temple are ahead; two open archways to access the inner structure of the temple lay before them. They slowly makes their way inside using one of the archways. Beyond the inner wall lies the main structure of the temple to their left; high, narrow stained glass windows and fine stonework cover the wall. To their right are clusters of smaller structures along the outer wall. There is a single avenue proceeding ahead between these two. Phuu and Kain makes their way across the avenue, proceeding cautiously. Passing by three small buildings, there is another archway in the outer wall to the south. The temple is quite large as clusters of more buildings are ahead and on their right. Following the walls of the temple, they round the corner and see three orcs with pikes guarding a pair of large double doors. The concentric outer wall and adjacent smaller buildings is still present in relatively close proximity. The orcs haven't noticed them yet.
Phuu rushes towards the orcs as he held his mace out, hoping Kain would catch them by surprise. The priest overswings and bashes the oaken door behind the orcs instead. Kain rushes in with his sword and two orcs fall. The third orc levels his pike at the barbarian. Phuu attacks the remaining orc and the last orc collapses. With that done, Phuu tries to see if he can open the doors. The doors are heavy, but open freely.
The temple itself was once quite beautiful, built of large, close-fitting stone with square walls and a domed basilica. The interior is smooth plaster, but the original creamy white of the plaster has given way to the dirty smears and leering images favored by Bane's disciples. The building itself is in very good repair (thanks to some rebuilding done carried out by Bane's followers), but is now a smelly, dark, and dismal place. Phuu and Kain proceed inside cautiously. There is a central walkway flanked by four large columns on either side up the middle to the altar. Near them on either side are a pair of small chambers. There doesn't seem to be much activity inside. The light filtering in is too dim to see much in the distance near the altar.
"This is not the resistance I would have expected," regards Kain in disappointment. "How do we proceed from here?"
"We need to find the artifacts that I'm supposed to retrieve," says Phuu. "Let's search for them while we still can."
"Where would you like to look first?" wonders Kain.
Phuu thinks for a bit. "Let's proceed to one of the small chambers."
Kain nods in affirmation and the two of them head to the left. There are two small chambers on the left side. The first is a vestibule containing six scrolls. Upon examination, they see that the scrolls are Clerical prayers for the spells Blade Barrier, Flame Strike, Protection from Evil 10' radius, Dispel Magic, Spiritual Hammer, and Bless. Phuu places the scrolls inside his backpack proceeds to the second small chamber to find nothing. They then head out and make their way to the chamber on the right. Also on the right were two chambers as well. They check out the first chamber on the right to find a small room that contains a couple of chests. The first chest held a bunch of coins that were mostly silver. The second chest had even more coins, though these were mostly copper. Altogether the coins totaled 18 gold, 56 silver, and 151 copper. The other chamber was also empty as it was on the left side.
Phuu was at a loss for the relics' location when he noticed that between each pair of pillars, there is a large brazen floor sconce. The flame of one seems to be affected by a draft he didn't readily note the source of. The smoke is drifting conspicuously toward the direction of one of the pillars. Phuu proceeds to the pillar in question with Kain following behind. Searching over the pillar, they see a seam in the stonework that is atypical compared to the surrounding masonry. The two of them try to open through the seam in the pillar and find that it is hollow. The facade moves aside with some effort, revealing a cache of weapons inside: a hand axe, dagger, war hammer, footman's mace, morning star, scimitar, spear, and short sword. They are of fine craftsmanship and in impeccable condition. Phuu takes the Footman's Mace for himself and the Dagger for Luyuriel while Kain picks through the cache.
Suddenly, they hear footsteps on the stonework approaching them. There is a humanoid form they can make out through the gloom.
"Identify yourself," declares Phuu. "Are you a friend or foe?"
Kain chucks a hand axe and there is a crunching sound followed by a body collapsing.
"Well that didn't work out the way I expected it to," mutters Phuu.
They move towards the body to see if they can identify the humanoid form, which turns out to be an orc in clerical garb. Nearby is an alcove decorated with various crude idols of wax and clay. The floor underneath sounds hollow.
As Phuu prys up the floor, the temple doors fly open and a voice bellows.
"Who disturbs this temple of Bane?!"
Turning around, Phuu and Kain see three orcs in clerical garb with a contingent of a dozen guards. Phuu readies his mace to take on the orcs and the guards. The orcs charge forward with pikes leveled and Kain takes a pike to the gut. The clerics move in behind this first wave of orcs. Kain draws his sword and the sconces' flames gutter and the air chills. He hacks down two of the orcs while Phuu misses his mark on one of them. Two more pikes skewer Kain as Phuu is poked slightly by one.
Just then, the clerics begin chanting. Phuu tries to stop their chanting, but nine orc pikemen stood between him and the clerics. Kain begins to scream and froth, his eyes glazing over as he enters a trance-like state. He cuts down two more pikemen and the pikemen adjust their formation to attack again. Kain takes another pike as the clerics continue chanting. The cleric in the more ornate garb advances, pushing up through the line of pikemen. Phuu casts Silence 15' Radius and the chanting goes silent. Kain attacks again and two heads roll. At this point, the pikemen look demoralized now. They back down, but maintain formation.
Meanwhile, the main cleric makes it to the front and reaches out to Phuu. He touches the human priest, who then feels a sharp pain wrack his body. Phuu attacks the cleric with his mace and manages to hit him, but the cleric simply grins. The other two clerics seem to be unaware of the silence spell's effect on them.
Kain lunges forward as the pikemen continued to hold their ground. Now there were only four pikemen left from the original dozen. Two pikemen thrust at Kain, but the barbarian looks unconcerned. He kills them off, leaving two left. They turn around and Kain takes advantage of the opening to drop one as his back is turned, but loses his grip on his now gore-soaked sword.
The cleric swings his staff at Phuu, damaging him. Phuu tries to fight back, but misses. The cleric begins casting a spell since he's outside of the 15-foot radius of Phuu's Silence spell. Again, the human priest swings his mace at the cleric to no avail. The cleric concludes his casting and three of the fallen orc pikemen rise and shamble towards Phuu. Kain leaps on the two chanting clerics and swings with his bare fists. There is a sharp snap of bone as Kain punches each of the clerics in the face and they drop to the floor.
The last cleric begins casting another spell as Kain turns and charges the zombies. The last orc pikeman got away, but everything else is dead. Kain rips the first zombie in half, but gets tangled up in the viscera. The remaining two attack Phuu, but miss. The cleric swings at the human priest with his staff, which Phuu evades as well. Having had enough of the cleric's shenanigans, Phuu uses Spiritual Hammer to strike him down. He sends an ethereal hammer down on the cleric and the man drops dead. Meanwhile, Kain moves in on the last two zombies and greases them. After this he looks around, then slowly regains his composure before retrieving his sword and returning it to its scabbard.
With the battle over, Phuu searches through the corpses to see if he can find these relics the Ill-Mater bishop mentioned of; nothing wholesome on any of the bodies. Phuu goes back to the sliding floor panel to see if there was something hidden. Under the floor were four potions, several statuettes, a wand, a holy symbol of Il-Mater, and a reliquary. The human priest stores all items in his backpack before heading over to the altar to see if there's anything important. There was some effigy strung together from carrion and a crude image of a hand painted in some unknown substance on the wall behind the altar. There are a couple of screened off partitions on either side of the altar. Phuu pushes his way through the left partition to find clerical vestments, the ones worn by the orcs.
"Do we part ways here then?" wonders Kain. "You have my sword for the remainder of the day."
It was now about 2:00 PM, well into the afternoon.
"I'll be needing your help later so please lend me your strength for a bit longer," answers Phuu.
The two of them make their way to the church of Il-Mater to meet with the bishop again. The bishop is not present, but the presiding clerics will relay anything needed.
"Please inform the Bishop that I have fulfilled my task," requests Phuu. "I'd like an audience with him again."
"Your petrified friend is near?" asks one of the Il-Mater clerics.
"No. She in inside a library with a basilisk guarding the room," explains Phuu.
"The bishop will make himself available to fulfill his debt to you, but you must have your friend with you," says the cleric. "The bishop is not willing to venture from the safety of New Phlan."
"Do you or the bishop know of a way to dispatch a basilisk then, so that we can bring my friend to him safely without risking another petrification?" asks Phuu.
"The bishop can only turn stone to flesh via the restoration spell," answers the cleric and apologizes.
"Very well then," sighs Phuu. "I'll be back with my friend's statue."

Episode 15:
Phuu slowly makes his way towards Luyuriel's statue with Kain following behind, and casts Wyvern Watch over the immediate area after reaching the elf. When they're up to the corner of the room with Luyuriel just out of arm's reach, they hear something casually shuffling around inside. After finishing the ward casting, Phuu tries to discern in which direction the sound came from, hoping it wasn't coming from the entrance to the room. Phuu looks towards Kain and informs him that he needs to carry Luyuriel's statue once they know the path is clear. The shuffling settles down and Kain hefts the statue and back into the hallway. It's heavy, causing him to move at about half normal pace. After rounding the corner of the hallway and back into the scribe's hall, the barbarian stops to take a break from the strenuous carrying.
Exiting the library without incident, they head back to the area around Kuto's Well before Kain stops for another short break. The kobolds don't notice them moving along the buildings. Before long, they're back in the slums and taking another breather. It was not until 6:00 pm when they make it back in New Phlan and back to the temple of Il-Mater.
"Can you take it from here, friend?" asks Kain, setting Luyuriel down.
"I will. Thank you," says Phuu graciously. "I am forever in your debt."
He hands over the 50 gold owed to the barbarian.
"I'll accept the weapons we found in the temple of Bane as my 20%," adds Kain.
"Thank you once again. You have been of immense help," says Phuu. "I couldn't have carried the statue back by myself."
Kain waves briefly as he turns and disappears into the night crowd. Phuu then finds a cleric and informs him that he has brought his friend's statue so that the bishop can restore her back to normal. Braccio appears soon after and the bishop produces a scroll to read from it. Luyuriel's body turns back to flesh from stone as the scroll's ink expunges from the parchment.
"Our debt to you is fulfilled," says Braccio.
"Thank you, My Lord," says Phuu as Luyuriel tries to move her jaw.
"Thank you again for removing the vile followers of Bane from our sacred grounds," says Braccio. "This, I'm afraid, is a service I will not be able to provide again in the future. Please be careful in your travels."
"Thank you," Luyuriel manages to croak out.
"Good evening then," Braccio bades farewell. "I hope our future exchanges are under better circumstances."
With the elf back to normal, Luyuriel heads to the Cracked Crown Inn with Phuu to rest after their tiring ordeal. On the way back, Phuu goes into detail of what he did in order to cure her petrification. He finishes his harrowing story by the time they make it to the inn. After paying the innkeeper, they retire to their room for the night.
"Perhaps we should hire ourselves a mage for the basilisk," suggests Luyuriel.
Phuu gives her the dagger he found at the temple and Luyuriel notices it is quite exceptional; it is light, well-balanced, and particularly keen. It turns out both the mace and dagger from the temple are enchanted. They put away their newfound weapons and head to bed.

Episode 16:
Morning came to the Cracked Crown Inn. There is a light rumble of thunder in the distance to the south. Outside, there was a significant overcast. Luyuriel awakens gently, letting out a fart as she went. Phuu walks away in disgust while pointing out the lack of manners to the elf.
"So should we finish exploring the library?" wonders Luyuriel, changing the subject. "Might need a mage to tag along with us for the basilisk."
"Yeah but where will we find one?" asks Phuu. "We can't hire a mercenary again."
"Sure we can, we have the gold," notes Luyuriel. "Where did you hire the last one?"
"I saw a notice at the Council Chambers," answers Phuu.
The two of them gather their things and saunter over to the council chambers. There they see the same postings that were listed as before. Smoe was the only mage at 50 gold per day, plus 20% of loot found.
"What do you think? We could just skip the library and go to the textile house," brings up Luyuriel. "But there might be something worse there."
"Your choice," insists Phuu. "Since I picked the last one, you can pick this one up. We'll pay him the gold 50-50 to lessen the burden on our pockets."
"I really want to finish checking out the library," asserts Luyuriel. "Don't want to miss anything."
The elf goes over to the Council Chambers to ask for Smoe and a courier is dispatched to find the mage. A couple of hours later the courier returns with Smoe, the gnome mage.
"Greetings!" exclaims Luyuriel.
"You have work for me?" asks the gnome.
"We're trying to get rid of a basilisk in a library," explains Luyuriel. "Think you can handle it?"
Smoe gives a wild-eyed stare and rubs his hands together greedily.
"Yes, yes, that will do..." he mutters.
"So you've had experience with them?" asks Luyuriel.
"You accept the terms of the contract then?" says Smoe, ignoring the elf's question.
"50 gold and 20% of what we find there."
"When do we leave?"
"How about now?"
"Let me gather my things..."
Smoe gestures them to follow and Luyuriel and Phuu go with him through the alleyways of the residential area of New Phlan to a small cottage. There he asks them to wait for a bit and he disappears inside. After some time, Smoe exits the cottage with an armload of stuff: two satchels, a scroll case on a lanyard, a sword at his waist, and a broom slung over his shoulder. He then asks them to lead the way.
The three of them head over to the slums and past Kuto's Well. Kobolds are moving in and out of the well and heading to and from the east. They don't seem to mind their presence. The archers remain on the rooftops as usual, but they also don't seem to notice them either.
"Curious," notes Luyuriel.
"Now don't you go and make faces at them, Luyuriel," warns Phuu, remembering the fiasco when the archer kobolds chased them into a building.
They continue to the library and head into the hallway flanked by alcoves for the various books. The room where Luyuriel and Phuu encountered the basilisk is ahead and to the right. The private office lies further down the hall, also on the right. Luyuriel checks to see if the lizard is around and finds no noticeable activity from her vantage point. She slinks cautiously into the first room on the right, with Phuu and Smoe following closely behind.
"It's in there?" asks Smoe.
Luyuriel looks around. "It was."
Smoe inches closer behind the elf to get a better look. He motions to a pile of debris. "It's probably nesting in all that rubbish."
Luyuriel quickly throws a book and hides.
"The heck?" exclaims Phuu. "How does that even help, Lu?"
They hear hissing and something thrashes from under a pile of rotting parchment and leaf litter.
"It's there!" Smoe points to it and backs into the hallway.
"Oy, use your magics on it!" says Luyuriel, thinking the gnome was trying to get away.
"Eh? You want to kill it?" responds Smoe in surprise.
Luyuriel raises an eyebrow. "... Yes?"
Smoe grumbles upon realizing what the objective really was.
"Wait, you wanted it alive, Smoe?" wonders the elf. " By all means, you can have it alive as long as you can keep it from turning us into stone."
"You can have it if you want," adds Phuu.
"I thought YOU wanted it alive," says Smoe. "I've got no use for it."
"That thing has already turned me into stone, so I certainly don't want it alive any more than now," replies Luyuriel.
The shuffling settles down and the three of them hear a low growl.
"Get ready, it's going to be angry..." warns the gnome as he begins to cast a spell.
Luyuriel takes out her throwing daggers while Phuu readies his footman's mace. Suddenly, a streak of fire issues from Smoe's fingertips and a massive explosion erupts in the alcove. Scorched paper and embers waft through the hallway. Luyuriel's eyes shoot open wide upon seeing the fiery sight.
"There goes your chance of exploring," says Phuu. "I'd be surprised if this building was intact after the fact."
The basilisk charges into the hall, but seems disoriented. Luyuriel throws her daggers at the basilisk while avoiding its gaze and manages to wound it a bit. Phuu attacks the basilisk with his mace, but misses due to the creature thrashing about. Smoe begins casting another spell and three glowing bolts of light issue from his fingertips and streak to the basilisk. The reptilian turns and glares at Smoe and the gnome begins to feel his body stiffen. Luyuriel throws more daggers at the basilisk, finally bringing it down.
"Whoa Luyuriel. Did you... finish it?" stutters Phuu in surprise.
"I remembered we damaged it somewhat before," notes the elf. She then turns her attention to the gnome. "Smoe! Do you know someone who could heal you?"
"Damn beastie," mutters Smoe, quickly taking out a potion and gulping it down.
"Oh," exclaims Luyuriel dumbfounded. "That works."
"..." expresses Smoe. "Eh. Give me a moment... it will pass."
He catches his breath and looks around. "Is that it then?"
"Not sure," responds Luyuriel, exploring the rest of the room cautiously.
Most everything is burned beyond recognition. There are some denser piles of debris that the fire didn't penetrate. Luyuriel looks through the piles and discovers some glass flasks are shattered, with oddly-colored liquids seeping into the ground.
"Looks like there were some sort of potions here," notes Luyuriel. "Guess that's it for this room."
A bit of royal blue fabric peeks out from what looks like the nest. Phuu begins to wonder if the basilisk they killed was a mother, but no young could be found in the nest; just the various vegetation, furs, and fabrics making it up. Everything is fairly desiccated; only the blue stands out from the earth tones. Luyuriel furiously rummages through the nest and then flips it when nothing else could be found. Phuu is relieved that they haven't committed the sin of killing a mother.
"On to the next room then," declares Luyuriel, going out and into the next unexplored room.
The three of them go over to what looks to be the private office. The closed door has a plaque labeling it as that of the master librarian. Luyuriel cautiously opens the door and the three of them enter. The room contains rotted furniture and little else. Here the master librarian died, refusing to abandon his books when the invaders came through. The skeletal remains are seated in a chair behind the desk.
"Well then," exclaims Luyuriel.
Just behind this seated figure, Luyuriel sees a man in scholarly garb leering at her. His pallor is unnatural and a shadowy aura envelops him. Luyuriel leers back as he drifts forward out of the shadows, revealing that his body is semi-transparent. His eyes are black hollows with pinpoints of piercing red.
"...Ooooh," Smoe utters, taking a few steps back.
"...Tyranthraxus?" says Luyuriel, trying to see if the ghost would respond to the name.
"I didn't sign on to this... you said nothing about specters!" Smoe yells out as he steps back some more.
"I didn't know there were ghosts here," defends Luyuriel.
She turns to her human companion. "Phuu? Make some magic? Purify him or something."
The figure continues to drift slowly towards the elf. About fifteen feet separates her from it now.
"So, whose ghost are ye?" Luyuriel continues talking, hoping to get the ghost to speak instead. "Former librarian? Yay? Nay?"
"Get the hell outta here!" screams Smoe and he bolts down the hall.
"What about your 20%?" Luyuriel shouts after him.
"Keep it!" the gnome calls back without turning.
Luyuriel shrugs. "So I guess you don't want to talk, Mr. Ghost?"
She takes out the silver short sword she found in the slums and waves it around. "Wonder if this does anything..."
The specter continues to drift forward and reaches out as if to touch her. Luyuriel steps back into the hallway as it came within five feet of her. It looks unconcerned about the silver short sword in her hand.
"Maybe this?" Luyuriel says as she puts away the silver short sword and takes out the enchanted dagger that Phuu got for her.
The ghost looks pissed off now.
"What'd I do?" exclaims Luyuriel in confusion as she holds the dagger out in front of her.
Smoe is at the other end of the hallway, calling back to them unintelligibly and waving frantically. The specter reaches out to touch Luyuriel, but the elf reacts quickly and feints to the left. She uses the enchanted dagger on the specter and the dagger meets some resistance even though the specter seems incorporeal.
"Guess it's a good thing I got petrified," says Luyuriel. "Otherwise we never would've gotten these weapons."
Phuu goes after the ghost with his enchanted mace, but misses it. Smoe casts a spell and three bolts of magical energy pierce the specter.
"Thought you skedaddled, Smoe!" Luyuriel responds in surprise.
The specter swats at Luyuriel again. As its hand passes through her body, she feels a withering chill at her core; her life force was fleeing. Luyuriel tries to counter the ghost with her enchanted dagger, but misses. Phuu attacks the specter with his enchanted mace again and misses as well. Three more bolts of light fly through the hall and pierce the ghost.
"At least Smoe has a good vantage point," notes Phuu.
"At least Smoe can do long-range attacks," gasps Luyuriel. "We have to get up and personal to do anything."
The specter takes another swipe at Luyuriel and she manages to dodge it. The elf counters with her enchanted dagger and lands a good hit on it. Smoe casts his spell and the specter dissipates into a shadowy vapor with a piercing moan.
"We never found out who that was," sighs Luyuriel.
She and Phuu head back into the office to find piles of moldering books and rotting furniture. There is a conspicuously intact book on the shelf.
Smoe huffs back into the office since he was far away from them during the battle.
"Thought you fled a while ago," Luyuriel looks at him.
"Damn fools, didn't I tell you to run?" gasps the gnome. He looks over at the elf. "It touched you, eh?"
"I guess it liked me," jokes Luyuriel. "Gave me the cold shoulder, though."
"It drains your life force..." explains Smoe.
"Yeah, that's how it felt," notes the elf. "Had a feeling it was doing that."
"Not too much more and you'd have become one yourself," asserts Smoe.
"Well he should know better than to touch a woman without her consent," responds Luyuriel matter-of-factly.
Smoe spaces out upon hearing such a nonchalant response.
"What?" exclaims the elf.
She examines the book on the shelf and discovers that it's hollowed out. Inside is a porcelain jar labeled Keoghtum’s Ointment, along with several small gems; six gems in total.
"Keoghtum’s Ointment?" reiterates Luyuriel, taking the jar out to examine it closely. "Wonder what this does. Something tells me it's not a beauty product."
Smoe shrugs as he didn't know what that was either. "Hemorrhoids, maybe?"
Luyuriel stares at him oddly and puts the six gems into her satchel.
"That's your share of the loot then?" wonders Smoe.
"Thought you didn't want your 20% anymore," responds Luyuriel.
"I decided to stick it out and fulfill the contract," answers the gnome bashfully. "I'll keep what was in the basilisk's nest."
"You sure about that?" asks Luyuriel, taking the six gems out. "You could have some of the gems."
"Nope, nope," assures Smoe.
"If you insist," says Luyuriel, putting the gems back into her satchel. "Phuu, want to hold onto this ointment?"
Phuu takes the questionable ointment from the elf as she examines the rest of the office. There was not much left other than useless remnants. Luyuriel then looks around the desk to see if she can find the identity of the librarian, but there's nothing distinguishable.
"Sadness," exclaims Luyuriel.
She ponders on what was left in the library to explore and realizes that only the garden remained untouched.
"Feel like lighting up some plant monsters, Smoe?"

Episode 17:
Luyuriel notices that Smoe's load is conspicuously lighter post-looting. A small, royal blue bag is now fastened prominently to his belt, likely the very object he acquired from the basilisk's nest earlier.
"Eh. I'm content..." replies the gnome.
"Not interested in gardening?" reiterates Luyuriel, unaware that the mage had not heard her previous question.
"You have vegetables that need tending?" wonders Smoe.
"We've got an overgrown garden to look through here," clarifies Luyuriel. "And that should be about it."
"Hmmm..." mutters Smoe, lazily rolling his eyes around.
"Could be some treasures hiding out in there," adds the elf.
"We will see then," says Smoe, his interest piqued.
Luyuriel, Phuu, and Smoe cautiously enter the garden, the last unexplored area in the Mantor's Library. The place was as overgrown as Luyuriel and Phuu remembered when they last saw it on the other side of the library. In the center is a large pond, now swampy and thick. The rest of the garden is choked with weeds and only the small paths of rats remain clear. The garden is quite large, easily equal to the same square footage as the rest of the library combined.
"We were told to avoid the 'green things,' whatever that means," spoke up Luyuriel, remembering the kobolds' warning.
"What's this about green things, now? The whole damn place is green," notes Smoe.
"Yeah, that's what I thought," responds Luyuriel, note quite sure what to look out for. "Probably some creature blending into the surroundings. Guess everyone should watch their step."
"What are we looking for then?" asks Smoe. "You said you needed to pick some produce?"
"Thought things would go a little quicker if you light the area up with fire," says Luyuriel. "Maybe we can flush out whatever's hiding in here."
"Culling the weeds for planting then?" remarks Smoe. "I'll need a half hour to memorize my fireball spell again..."
As he began to read his spellbook, Luyuriel takes out her quarterstaff and pokes at every lump of foliage. Nothing too exotic-looking, just untended overgrowth so far. She goes cautiously southward, spotting a door in that direction. It is obscured by thick vines, but distinguishable as such. Luyuriel carefully heads to the door, poking things with her quarterstaff as she went.
"Stop being so impatient and wait for Smoe to memorize his spell, Luyuriel," Phuu calls to her anxiously. "We brought him with us for a reason."
"I'm just checking it out," Luyuriel calls back.
The elf makes it to the door and finds it's entangled with the dense overgrowth and doesn't seem like it would open easily. Disappointed, she carefully heads back to the others and is promptly glomped by Phuu, as he was afraid something would happen to her like what happened with the basilisk.
After thirty long minutes, Smoe finally closes his book. "Done!"
"Burning time?" wonders Luyuriel.
"Eh? I have a cream for that," responds the gnome dumbfoundedly.
"I meant the garden," clarifies the elf.
"I see. Where would you like it then?"
"Go after the bigger stuff. We can cut through the small plants."
A streak of flame shoots to the center of the garden and explodes, leaving a swath of scorched vegetation behind. The perimeter of the pond is partially discernible now. The area around the southern door was unaffected, as the denser area was near the center. Luyuriel makes her way to the door to the south with Phuu and Smoe following after her.
"Well, at least we know where the pond is so we don't fall into it," notes Luyuriel, passing the pond.
At the door, she takes out her daggers to cut away at the vines covering the door. Suddenly, she hears some thick, sucking sounds from the wall above her and backsteps just in time to avoid a thick mass of bright green ooze as it plops onto the ground in front of her.
"I'm guessing that's the 'green thing' that we were warned about," concludes Luyuriel.
Looking up, the three of them see several other globule masses mixed among the vegetation that is clinging to the wall. The mass that had fallen lays motionless at Luyuriel's feet.
"Green slime, eh?" says Smoe. "That would be something to avoid then. Don't think you'll get through that door without disturbing the others."
Luyuriel switches her daggers to her quarterstaff and pokes the mass. It's surface has a yielding rubbery consistency. A thin film of mucous-like substance coats her quaterstaff where it made contact.
"Eww," mutters Luyuriel quietly. She turns to Smoe. "Want to try zapping them? I don't think fire would have much of an effect on them."
Within minutes, the end of her staff begins to whither and turn black.
"Yikes, they're poisonous! Avoid them indeed!" exclaims the elf in shock. "Phuu, do you have any sort of shield you can cast on us?"
Smoe casts magic missile, but the magical bolts of energy seem to be harmlessly absorbed by the blob.
"Forget it! Burn them all!" yells Luyuriel anxiously.
"Should I memorize fireball again then? Oh... hold on," says Smoe. He reaches into blue bag and pulls out four bottles of lamp oil that seem physically impossible to fit inside. "Here. Douse them with this."
Luyuriel douses the blobs liberally with the oil while Smoe strikes sparks with his flint and steel. He then collects a mass of lit kindling and tosses it onto the area covered in oil. The vegetation on and along the wall slowly become enveloped in flames. There is a low wheezing sound mixed in with the crackle from the fire as the globule masses slowly whither up. While the fire burned, a door is vaguely distinguishable among the overgrowth on the western wall. From this position, more green slimes are noticeably mixed in with the vegetation there as well. There is heavy black smoke that builds and lingers as the flames gutter.
"I think I see another door," says Luyuriel looking over yonder. "Wonder where those blobs came from."
She goes to the door on the western wall after the fire subsides. There are no traps, but it looks like there is some masses of green slime mixed in with the ground vegetation.
"Smoe! Do you have some more oil on you?" Luyuriel asks the mage.
"I think that was it," he responds back.
Luyuriel tries to light the blobs on fire with her own flint and steel. The sparks quench on the liquid surface of the mass, but it doesn't look like it was enough to ignite on its own.

Episode 18:
"Ugh, how to get rid of the rest of these blobs?" sighs Luyuriel in exasperation.
Smoe simply shrugs.
"Smoe, do you have enough magic in you to fireball away the rest of the blobs here?" asks the elf.
The gnome's lazy eye wanders around as he thought. "Give me another half hour to memorize one."
"Sure thing."
Luyuriel examines the now safer portions of the garden as Smoe goes through his spellbook. The half hour passes uneventfully.
"Ready," declares the gnome. "Near the other door then?"
"Yeah, just clear out the rest of the blobs," says Luyuriel.
With an explosion of fire, the whole southern half of the area is cleared of vegetation. The scattered slimes are now withered and crispy. By this time, it's about two hours until dusk. Luyuriel meanders over to the southwest door. Some heavier vines still cling over the door, but they're easy enough to pull back now. The door opens into a small breezeway, revealing a coat rack and several pairs of dry rotted shoes lined up along the wall. It's long disused like the other areas of the library.
Disappointed with the find, the three of them head over to the south door.
"I'm guessing this leads outside," assumes Luyuriel.
"Opening it then?" wonders Smoe.
After checking the door for any more dangers, the elf opens it carefully. The door opens into the streets. The sun is still up, but the shadows are heavy over the tall walls of the area.
"Well, priest. We got your friend back and killed the basilisk, and that specter to boot," summarizes Smoe. "Is our business concluded? I'd rather not be this far from home after dark."
"Yep, looks to be it," declares Luyuriel. "Thanks for all the help."
Luyuriel and Phuu pay the mage his advertised 50 gold.
"You know..." begins Smoe, patting his newfound bag. "I'd be willing to provide consultation at my home for swag this nice. Feel free to drop by anytime you need my assistance."
"Oh, thanks!" exclaims Luyuriel, surprised at sudden offer.
The elf and Phuu look on in disbelief as Smoe nonchalantly pulls a broom out of bag, straddles it, and flies away.
"Okay that was not something I expected," utters Phuu. "He pulled a winsome witch on us."
"... I guess we should head back to the Cracked Crown," Luyuriel speaks up once Smoe was out of sight. "Got your fill of the library, Phuu?"
"You mean the library that petrified and then almost killed you? Yes," Phuu asserts in an unamused manner. "Let us not do that ever again."
"Well, that would depend on what else we run into later on," responds Luyuriel. "Our adventures here are far from over."
The two of them make it back to civilized Phlan without further incident and saunter back to their beloved inn.
"I need to replace my staff," says Luyuriel as she examines the decrepit end of her quarterstaff. "Let's head back to that house with the quarterstaves tomorrow."
"If only you hadn't decided to poke that blob back then," notes Phuu.
"Well, we wouldn't have known if it was poisonous or not," argues Luyuriel. "It's fine, not like I was too attached to my staff. Especially since we found that building with the extras."
Phuu heals the both of them up and then they head to bed. During the middle of the night, Luyuriel becomes roused from a deep sleep. There was a draft from a now open window and she senses a presence in the room.
"Who's there?" she exclaims as she looks around the room.
A shadowy form leaps out the window just as she stirs. Luyuriel quickly gets up and goes after the shadow. Peering out of the window, she sees nothing. There are footsteps reverberating from a nonspecific direction through the empty streets. There was no way she could give chase with the lack of direction.
Luyuriel turns back into the room to check if any of their stuff was stolen. Their belongings are disturbed, but nothing appears missing. However, there is a sealed note on the floor near her bed. She goes over to pick up the note and reads the contents. Inside was a terse message in thief's cant glyphs: We're watching.
"Phuu, are you awake?" the elf asks her companion.
Luyuriel goes over to poke the priest and he eventually awakens.
"What's wrong, Luyuriel? Why are you awake in the middle of the night?" asks Phuu, getting up out of bed to hug the elf. "Did you have a nightmare?"
Luyuriel looks at him with a deadpan expression.
"I think I may have been inducted into the Thieves Guild," she shakes him off and shows him the letter. "It says that they're watching."
"That is creepy. I hope they don't over us while we sleep," notes Phuu. "Congratulations."
"I guess this means I'll be able to stay in that inn in the slums," says Luyuriel. "Maybe they'll be willing to let you stay there since you're a companion."
With that, the both of them head back to bed. The remainder of the night passes without incident.
--
The next morning, Luyuriel rolls out of bed. She is well-rested and uninjured, but still feels an ineffable lethargy at her core from the specter's touch.
"Where to today, Phuu?" she asks the priest.
"You want to head to the Thief Guild and see what's up?" wonders Phuu. "Maybe they have some information."
"About the Cadorna house?" responds Luyuriel. "Guess it would be a good idea to get some information about the place before we check it out."
"Yes. He lost interest in you when I blurted out the name so he must be hiding something," says Phuu uncomfortably, remembering that incident.
Luyuriel puts the thieves guild letter into her satchel and the both of them head to the slums. They've now become familiar enough with the slums that navigating it has become effortless, and arrive at the Nat Wyler's Bell Inn while it is still quite early. Luyuriel bounds up to the innkeeper.
"Hey there," she greets the man. "Know anything about the Cadorna house these days?"
The seamy-looking innkeeper looks her over. "Ay, what you want to know about it? It's derelict. Gnolls have it overrun."
The sound of this sinks Luyuriel's heart. "... Gnolls? Are you sure?"
The innkeeper nods in response.
"Do you know how many there are in there?" she asks him.
"Probably no less than forty at any given time."
"Why would there be that many in a textile house?"
The innkeeper shrugs. "They're vermin. Move in wherever they can."
"They sure don't fight like vermin..." grumbles Luyuriel. "Do you have any idea why so many kobolds hang around the well?"
"Ay, that bastard Norris the Gray supposed to have his base of operations in the catacombs under the well," answers the innkeeper. "My associates and I have been fine to leave well enough alone when it comes to the monstrous element roaming about... but his band has been obstinate in reciprocating the sentiment. They'll pillage what they can from whomever without any regard."
"Norris the Gray?" reiterates Luyuriel with concern. Now they have another barrier to contend with. "Have you heard of anything about a Tyranthraxus?"
"'The boss' they call him. Not too much else I can say with certainty," replies the innkeeper. "Supposedly a real charismatic fellow to lead such a disjointed group of monsters."
"Indeed..." utters Luyuriel. "Thanks for the information."
The innkeeper nods to her and she turns to head out of the inn. As Phuu and Luyuriel leave the inn, a rough-looking character barges through the door. Him and Luyuriel bump into each other and he glares at her.
"Watch it, elf," warns the stranger. "..."
Luyuriel glares back as he makes his way to the stairs and heads to the lower portions of the inn without breaking his stride.

Episode 19:
"What's that guy's problem?" wonders Luyuriel.
"Who knows?" responds Phuu. "It's the thieves guild. Everyone must be looking at the other person with suspicion."
"Well, it doesn't look like we'll be able to explore the Cadorna house with all those gnolls wandering around in it," notes the elf. "We can barely manage the ones we've already encountered."
Luyuriel goes back up to the innkeeper. "Do you know anything about a thieves guild?"
The innkeeper coughs loudly in response. "What?"
"I received a rather interesting message saying that I'm being watched," explains Luyuriel. "Maybe you might know something about that?"
"I assure you, this is as reputable establishment as they come by, considering our location," affirms the innkeeper. "I don't know anything about the operation of such a guild."
Luyuriel narrows her eyes. "I see..."
Luyuriel and Phuu wander out of the inn. When she saw the coast was clear, she grabs Phuu and takes him around the back. It's pretty much indistinguishable from the other buildings in the area; a front and back door with no windows. The building possesses a mansard roof and a single chimney pipe. As they make their way up to the back door, the rude guy exits. He walks past them briskly, paying them no mind while clutching something bulky under his cloak. After he disappears, Luyuriel goes up to the back door to examine it. It has heavy wooden planking with iron hardware. Overall it's heavily weathered, but structurally sound. Luyuriel tries to open the door but finds that it's locked. Suddenly, Phuu decides to knock on the door, causing Luyuriel to become alarmed.
"Why would you do that, Phuu?" she whispers frantically to him.
They then hear a voice on the other side. "Aye?"
The door opens to reveal none other than the innkeeper himself.
"You again?" he exclaims.
"Uh, just wondering where this door goes," says Luyuriel quickly. "Curious."
"Don't make yourselves a nuisance around here," warns the innkeeper. "If you need a room, please use the front door."
"Sure thing," responds Luyuriel nervously.
With that, the innkeeper went back in and the door was shut once again.
"Why you knock on door?" Luyuriel babbles at Phuu.
"Sowie," apologizes the priest.
"Doesn't look like they're willing to tell us much about the thieves guild," sighs Luyuriel. "Let's head over to the market."
"This is even after you told them you got a letter from them," asserts Phuu. "So either they don't know or they are acting oblivious until they get a confirmation."
The both of them head on over to the marketplace. They notice the market stalls are rearranged from what they recall. Wollaeger the Chandler and Aldo the Wine-seller are the only two peddlers they recognize. Most of the stalls are unoccupied. There is a disheveled-looking cleric and a rag picker in addition to the aforementioned.
"Yes, you? You have your eyes on a rag? Only two copper pieces for such a versatile item," rattles the rag picker as he holds out dingy scrap of a tattered garment. "It's very nice, yes? ...and such a bargain."
"Uh... sure," responds Luyuriel, who walks away briskly to Wollaeger's stall. "Hello."
Wollaeger was shuffling noisily through assorted merchandise. When he heard Luyuriel greet him, he looks up.
"Good morning," Wollaeger greets back. "Are we looking for something in particular today?"
"Got anything that would be useful against gnolls?" asks the elf.
"Eh... such as weapons?" asks the merchant.
"Weapons, or armor," clarifies Luyuriel.
"What isn't useful?" responds Wollaeger. "They're big and clumsy. Not too bright, either."
"Know what's the best way to deal with, say, forty of them?" wonders Luyuriel.
"Oh, forty, you say? That..." begins Wollaeger. "A sizeable band of fighters, I'd say. You intend to fight forty on your own?"
"Not all at once, one at a time," clarifies Luyuriel. "Or three."
"They'll each fight to the death," asserts the merchant. "It will be a matter of attrition."
"Interesting," responds Luyuriel as she formulates a possible plan of attack. "Know what they're most interested in? Favorite food or whatnot?"
"Can't say. I've heard they'll eat just about anything," says Wollaeger. "They are quite cruel and sadistic creatures, I'm told."
"I see," says Luyuriel. "Thanks for the info."
"Certainly," says Wollaeger.
Luyuriel and Phuu leave the market and head in the direction of the unexplored buildings near the library. There's a large outer wall around the perimeter of a group of buildings. From the front of the library, they see two alleys that will let them pass the wall and enter a central square. They decide to take the alley on the left, which has them passing between two buildings. The one to the right is relatively small compared to the one on the left, which runs the full length of the outer wall. Thirty feet in and the alley opens into the large central square, approximately 100x100 square feet. The larger structure to the left has several doors. They see some other, smaller structures across the way. Luyuriel examines the building on the right, of which the closest entryway is about twenty feet beyond the cover of the alley; It's a pair of heavy doors. Luyuriel detects no traps, but hears heavy breathing from behind the doors. Not feeling confident about it, she backs away from the doors and goes to the building on the left, which consists of a single door of similar construction. There are three more like this one further north, along this wall. No traps, but Luyuriel and Phuu detect a faint chanting. Luyuriel carefully opens the door while Phuu keeps his mace ready just in case. The door groans from strain on the old iron hinges as it opens to reveal a gnoll leering at them from beneath a heavy cowl. It brandishes a gnarled staff, topped with a humanoid skull.
"He looks friendly," says Luyuriel as she takes out her daggers.
The gnoll begins chanting loudly. Phuu casts Silence and the chanting stops. Despite that, the gnoll continues mouthing mindlessly as it makes cryptic gestures. Luyuriel manages to land a weak hit on it while Phuu attacks the gnoll with his enchanted mace. The gnoll swings with it's staff and Phuu ducks just in time to avoid a blow to the head. Luyuriel lands more hits with her daggers and Phuu misses with his mace. The gnoll swings at Phuu again, but the priest was too agile and avoids the staff. Luyuriel and Phuu's next attack sends the gnoll on the verge of collapse. It flails out in desperation, but Luyuriel finishes it off and it collapses in a heap.
With the gnoll dead, Luyuriel and Phuu take some time to examine the room. The room is about 20x20 feet with a door on each of the four walls. The walls are smeared with dark stains and a pile of bones litter the floor in front of a crude altar where noxious incense burns. The only furnishing is the altar. There is a crude brazer with some hair and offal smoldering. Some documents lay nearby, which Luyuriel takes an interest in and begins leafing through them. Each has a broken wax seal of some unknown and elaborate design. Some appear to be proclamations granting titles; most seem to be demanding tributes of resources and conscripts. All are signed, "Tyranthraxus."
Luyuriel's lips move but no sound comes out. Phuu cannot hear her as the fifteen-foot radius of his Silence spell covers the entire room. Seeing this, Luyuriel takes Phuu and the documents outside into a secluded spot.
"Now imagine this, times forty," says Phuu. "We'll never be able to clear out all those gnolls this way. We need help."
"Well, as long as we can take them on one at a time, I think we should be okay," assures Luyuriel.
"I doubt they will come at us one by one unless we are stuck in a doorway though," adds Phuu.
"Anyways, I guess this proves Tyranthraxus is flesh and bone," says Luyuriel. "Do you think we should tell Cadorna?"
"Well, last time I blurted his name out by mistake, you said I shouldn't have done that," reminds Phuu. "And we still don't know if he's connected to Tyranthraxus. Maybe we should keep this to ourselves for the time being."
"Well, do you think we can trust him?" asks the elf.
"For now, I don't," asserts Phuu. "Because he seems to know more than he claims."
"Guess that settles that," says Luyuriel.
The two of them go back inside and examine the door on the left. They see that it's unlocked so Luyuriel carefully opens the door. The door swings open silently due to Phuu's spell. On the other side was a walled garden, now disused and overgrown. It runs from north to south, and they can see several other doorways leading back into the main building.
"Hope there's no poison blobs here," says Luyuriel, recalling the garden at the Mantor's Library.
Fortunately the area looks benign. It seems to be the remnants of a vegetable garden. There's nothing worth eating, though.
They go over to the door on the south wall. They readily hear some clattering and shuffling as they near the door. A foul odor wafts up to greet them.
"Yay or nay, Phuu?" asks Luyuriel.
"I say nay," answers the priest. "Unless you are ready for a fight. I just don't want the risk at this moment."
"Hmm," mutters Luyuriel before heading back into the room where they came from.

Episode 20:
"Should we try another door?" wonders Luyuriel.
"Yes. Just not the one with the foul odor," Phuu responds as he keeps his mace ready just in case.
Luyuriel checks for traps and noise at the northern door.
"Something is inside," asserts Luyuriel. "Care to draw them out, Phuu? If there are too many, we'll escape the way we came in."
"How do I do that?" asks Phuu.
"Open the door," says Luyuriel simply and she goes to hide in shadows.
Phuu opens the door slowly and they end up in a room slightly larger than the one they were in. It's full of scattered bedding and parodies of human comforts. Three female gnolls look up at him and snarl. The females are slightly shorter and narrower than the males, but are still lean and muscular. The door is too small for more than one to come through at a time so the first gnoll rushes up to meet Phuu. The priest attacks the female gnoll with his mace, but misses. As it pushes into the room, Luyuriel lunges from the shadows and attacks from behind. The gnoll spins to swipe at Luyuriel with a short sword and over swings and lodges the blade into the door frame. Phuu attacks the female gnoll with his mace and misses again. Luyuriel fumbles her dagger, but manages to get away from the gnoll and retrieve it. The gnoll attempts to pry its sword from the door frame while the other two level spears and move in. Phuu takes out the gnoll and it collapses, failing to free its sword. The other two remain on the other side, warding the door with the spears. Luyuriel returns to the shadows while Phuu waits near the door to see if the gnolls make a move. They each enter the door, one behind the other with spears lowered. The gnoll to the rear turns to face Luyuriel and attack and the one that came in first attacks Phuu. Luyuriel evades the attack, but Phuu is wounded by the spear. Luyuriel tries to attack, but has a difficult time getting in close while avoiding the gnoll's spear. Phuu moves in to attack, but misses. The gnolls continue attacking and this time Luyuriel is wounded. Despite that, she manages to close in with daggers in hand. The gnoll is stabbed in the abdomen and slumps over. The last gnoll continues attacking Phuu and he avoids the spear again. Luyuriel comes at the gnoll from behind and lands hits with her daggers. A final strike from Phuu's mace drops the gnoll.
With the battle over, Luyuriel checks the bodies for items and is disappointed to find nothing.
"Piffle," she exclaims.
They cautiously enter the room, which is fitted in crude and barbaric imitation of human habitation: an algae-green bath, tattered finery, and old warped furniture pathetically set out to look impressive. There are doors on each of the four walls, all barred from the inside with the exception of the one they came through. Luyuriel looks through everything and is disappointed again to find nothing of value.
"What now, Phuu?" she asks her human companion.
"You want to check and explore the other rooms?" asks Phuu. "If you sense a presence or noise, we'll simply avoid them."
One of the doors can reasonably be assumed to enter the garden and another the central square. Back in the shrine, the southern door has not been checked. Then there are the ones accessible through the garden. Luyuriel flips a coin to determine their next move.
"Tails--let's check the other door leading from the shrine," decides the elf. "These are all barred, so nothing should surprise us from here."
Getting close to the door, they each smell the foul odor that was similar to the odor from the door at the south end of the garden.
"No traps. I do hear some dull hacking and crunching," notes Luyuriel. "That smell though..."
"The smell of blood and gore?" wonders Phuu.
"Something like rotten meat," asserts the elf. "Should we come back to this one? You think it's any worse that those females?"
"Want to open the door and kill whatever is inside or play safe and go some other way?" counters Phuu.
"Let's try to draw whatever out again. Stick to our escape plan as a contingency," suggests Luyuriel and she goes to hide in the shadows.
The door creaks a bit as it slowly opens. They see a large gnoll with a cleaver in hand, hacking at some unknown carcass on a large butcher's block. A second gnoll is tending a small fire, over which a cast iron pot is resting. They seem distracted by their work and don't notice the door opening. In addition, their backs are to them.
Luyuriel peeks around the corner and whispers to Phuu to follow her. Phuu follows Luyuriel slowly as she slips into the room, keeping to the shadows. Luyuriel lunges from the shadows at the butcher and damages it. The gnoll butcher bellows and lurches back as Luyuriel's daggers sink in. It falls forward noisily onto the butcher block. The second gnoll turns and slowly rises from its squatting position. Phuu attacks the other gnoll, but misses. Luyuriel throws her daggers and they dig into the gnoll. The gnoll leaps forward with a roughly split log in hand and swings the makeshift club wildly at Phuu, but misses. Phuu manages to land a hit on the gnoll with his mace. Luyuriel throws another set of daggers and the first dagger hits, but the second narrowly misses Phuu. The gnoll swings its log at Phuu again and lands a hit on the human. Luyuriel moves in with her daggers and the daggers find home. The gnoll lets out a wheezing squeal before dropping to the floor.
"You need a snack, Phuu?" jokes Luyuriel, pointing to the bubbling pot.
"I'd rather not," responds Phuu in disgust.
Luyuriel checks the bodies and pokes around the room while Phuu offers utters a prayer for the carcass they were preparing.
"Poor thing. Whatever it was," he sighs.
The room is the remains of a large kitchen. Most of the implements and furnishings are in disrepair. The butcher just has his old, worn cleaver; the other has flint and steel on him. There are two doors at each end of the south wall, and two at the north. The later doors lead back to the shrine and, likely, back to the garden.
"You need flint and steel, Phuu?" asks Luyuriel. "I already have my own so I don't need these."
Phuu takes the flint and steel Luyuriel picked from the other gnoll and thanks the elf.
"How about it Phuu? Think we'll have much trouble clearing these rooms out, so long as we don't alert the whole compound to our presence?" wonders Luyuriel as she collects her daggers.
"Let's clear the rooms one by one," agrees Phuu. "Hopefully we won't run into another butcher."
Luyuriel moves to the door at the southwest end of the kitchen. She notices a padlock and attempts to pick it. The lock pops open and Luyuriel opens the door cautiously. The room is about the size of the shrine and appears to be a larder. It's lined with shelves and stacked floor to ceiling with provisions. Most everything is crawling with insects or covered in mold.
"That explains the smell," she declares.
They close door and move to the door at the southeast end of the kitchen. They cautiously open the door and see in the center of this room is the well that likely supplies the entire complex. It's about the same size as the larder. Luyuriel curiously peers down the well. The water level is quite low, so she cannot see the surface. Nothing looks particularly out of the ordinary.
"Thirsty?" she turns to Phuu.
"No," the priest responds with a deadpan expression.
The two of them return to the kitchen and close the door.

Episode 21:
Luyuriel and Phuu head back to the garden. At the northeast corner of the garden is a pair of doors--one on the north wall and one on the east wall. Just to the left of this first door is an alley that continues ahead. Luyuriel approaches the door on the east wall and attempts to open it. Unfortunately, the door doesn't budge. There is no visible lock, as something is likely blocking it from the other side. Feeling unsure, the elf saunters over to the north door, which is just a turn to the left from the east door. There's no trap or noise to be detected around the door, but it appears to be locked. Luyuriel attempts to unlock the door, but fails to do so.
"Where's Xeiyrr when we need him?" grumbles Luyuriel.
She kicks the door in frustration and the sound of low growling and shuffling can be heard from within as a result. Surprised, Luyuriel reactively goes to hide in the shadows while Phuu readies himself with his mace. The lock clicks audibly and swings open to reveal a large gnoll with a halberd and chainmail. It steps out and notices Phuu. Before it could do anything, Luyuriel leaps from the shadows and attacks the gnoll with her daggers. She lands critical hits on the beast, causing it to reel back and drop its halberd. Phuu quickly strikes with his mace and the gnoll is taken by surprise and is heavily wounded. It bellows out and a second gnoll, armed likewise, charges through the doorway, slamming it shut behind him. Phuu is pierced with the point of the charging gnoll's halberd. The second gnoll has positioned itself between Phuu and the wounded gnoll. Luyuriel tries to attack the wounded gnoll, but its companion manages to keep her at bay with its halberd. Phuu goes after the second gnoll, but the gnoll feints and the priest is unable to land a solid blow. The wounded gnoll draws a longsword and squares off with Luyuriel. The second gnoll swings its halberd at Phuu and clips him with the weapon's axe blade. Luyuriel counterattacks the wounded gnoll and manages to land a meager hit. Phuu attacks the second gnoll with his mace again, but still can't get past the creature's halberd. The wounded gnoll hacks at Luyuriel with its sword, but fails to land a solid hit on the swift elf. The second gnoll attacks Phuu, drawing the head of the halberd from the back of Phuu's leg to pull him to the ground.
"Phuu!" exclaims Luyuriel.
The elf counterattacks the wounded gnoll and manages to stab it. The gnoll is looking undeterred, though gravely injured. Phuu tries to get up and the second gnoll attempts to kick him as he gets to his feet; fortunately it just misses. The wounded gnoll attacks Luyuriel and cuts her significantly with its longsword.
"Oof!" Luyuriel exclaims. "Tis only a flesh wound!"
She counters back with her daggers, but was only able to get one stab into the wounded gnoll. It was enough, as the gnoll slumps over, its fur matted in blood. Phuu attempts Spiritual Hammer on the remaining gnoll, but misses completely. As she is heavily wounded herself, Luyuriel goes to hide in shadows to bide her time. Phuu strikes back with his mace, but the gnoll's halberd kept it out of reach. The gnoll overswings with a heavy down-slash and splinters the haft of the halberd on a stone. Luyuriel attacks from the shadows, but fails to land a hit as she nearly lands on the splintered haft. Phuu is stopped in his tracks for the same reason. The gnoll discards its broken halberd and draws a longsword. Luyuriel manages to avoid the sword and stabs the gnoll with both daggers. The gnoll strikes out at Phuu with its sword and misses. Both Luyuriel and Phuu double-team the gnoll, but it still wasn't enough to bring it down. The gnoll spins to the rear, swinging at Luyuriel. The rushing of the air can be felt by her as the blade passes just overhead. In an instance, Luyuriel manages to stab back with a single dagger. Phuu is still unable to get in close enough to hit the gnoll. The gnoll lunges at Luyuriel and misses, thanks to the elf's swift legwork. She takes another stab at the gnoll in response. This causes the gnoll to droop its sword slightly, allowing Phuu to rush in to finish it off with his mace. The gnoll drops to the gound.
"FINALLY!" gasps Luyuriel in exasperation.
The only things on the gnolls are the halberds, longswords, short bows, and a quiver of 12 arrows. They are each wearing a suit of mail and nothing else.
"Piffle," sighs Luyuriel.
Luyuriel nudges the bodies with her feet. The first one to fall is breathing, albeit faintly.
"Can you talk, gnoll?" she asks it.
It's unresponsive and doesn't appear to be conscious. Luyuriel goes to open the door that the gnolls came out of, but it's locked again. There's a significant commotion coming from inside.
"Oh boy," exclaims Luyuriel, expecting there to be more gnolls coming out of there.
The two of them flee the area and Phuu heals Luyuriel as they ran. It's around mid afternoon by the time they get out into the streets. They make it back to the Nat Wyler's Bell Inn without incident. By then, Phuu had Luyuriel mostly healed up from the battle.
"Can I help you two?" asks the innkeeper.
"Yes, how much for a night here?" wonders Luyuriel.
"A room for the two of you?" asks the innkeeper.
"Yes'm," answers Luyuriel. "Separate beds, of course."
"One gold each," responds the innkeeper. "Four beds to a room. Do what you like."
"What do you think, Phuu?" asks Luyuriel, turning to her human companion. "Here or the usual inn we go to?"
"Let's stay at this one and see how it goes," replies Phuu.
"Well?" asks the innkeeper impatiently.
"I guess we're staying here for the night," answers Luyuriel, handing over 1 gold piece.
Phuu offers his share of the gold to the innkeeper.
"Room four," says the innkeeper, gesturing to the stairwell behind the counter.
"Thank ye," responds Luyuriel.
She and Phuu descend the stairs, examining the area as they went. The inn was obviously a converted cellar; six rooms, three on either side of a central hallway. There's a larger common area with several tables and a fireplace.
"Do you want to grab a bite to eat, Phuu?" asks Luyuriel. "Maybe we could learn a bit more about this place."
"Sure thing," responds the priest.

Episode 22:
Just after sunset, Luyuriel and Phuu ate their evening meals at the inn. Afterwards, Luyuriel walks around hoping to overhear anything about the Thief Guild. She can hear some indistinct chatter from the upstairs room. She nonchalantly walks upstairs and encounters four men at the table to the back corner playing cards. They become less verbal as they notice her presence. Seeing this, Luyuriel turns around and walks out of the room, only to hide herself in shadows to slink back in unnoticed. The chatter continues in lower tones, but she can pick up some pieces of the conversation.
"Yeah, that's the one..."
"...got the notice..."
"...sure about Cadorna..."
"...bronze dragon."
Unable to hear much more than that, Luyuriel slinks downstairs to examine the common room. There is a small fireplace on the western wall, just north of the staircase. Scattered about are five small, round tables with a pair of chairs around each. The elf pokes around the tables and finds nothing out of the ordinary. She checks out the fireplace to see nothing noteworthy about the masonry; the flue feeds into the fireplace on the ground floor. Some fire tools and a couple of cords of wood lie nearby. With no more clues to find about the Thief Guild, Luyuriel and Phuu head off to their room to sleep for the night. At some point during the night, Luyuriel hears footsteps outside of their door, but nothing more comes of it. The remainder of the night is uneventful.
In the morning, the two of them check their things to find nothing missing; everything seems to be in place.
"Let's go meet the archbishop, Luyuriel," suggests Phuu. "Only he can cure you right now."
"Fine," sighs the elf.
They head over to the temple that Phuu retook for the Il-Mater. Crossing the bridge over the foul river, they see the temple is currently undergoing repairs. A young cleric of Il-Mater greets them at the gate.
"Yes, the bishop is in," responds the cleric. "Is he expecting you?"
"No, we just have a question," assures Luyuriel.
"Follow me and we'll see if he has a moment to spare," says the cleric.
Phuu can still see remnants of the battle to reclaim the grounds from the orcish followers of the dark god Bane as the cleric led them through the compound to the temple proper. The cleric leads them to an office across the way from the front doors of the temple and knocks at the door.
"Enter."
Luyuriel and Phuu greet Bishop Braccio cordially.
"Ah, you two again," exclaims Braccio. "Have you come to see the fruits of your victory here?"
"Yes, and we also have a question," speaks up Luyuriel.
"Certainly. What is it?" asks Braccio as he rolls out construction blueprints.
"You wouldn't happen to know how to reverse a spectre's touch, would you?" wonders the elf.
"Who has been afflicted by such a dreadful being?" asks Braccio.
Luyuriel unabashedly raises her hand. "I seem to be a magnet for bad vibes."
" I see," Braccio raises an eyebrow. "Well, I would be able to remove such an affliction; however... it is a difficult undertaking."
"We'd be willing to help out again in return," offers Luyuriel. "Maybe build a wall or something."
"I'm willing offer my time and service to you, but the materials for the spell are quite rare," explains Braccio. "I'd only ask that the church be reimbursed for their cost."
"I'm guessing it doesn't have anything to do with reconstruction efforts," notes Luyuriel. "How much are we talkin' here?"
"500 gold," Braccio answers straightforwardly.
Luyuriel's jaw drops at the sound of that. "That's... quite a hefty sum. Could we perhaps get the materials ourselves so you don't have to use your stock?"
"As I said, the materials are quite scarce," reiterates Braccio. "I don't think you'd be able to procure them locally."
"We can travel," speaks up the elf.
Braccio produces a material sample, which seems to be a resinous gum. "You would need to acquire this. It's from a rare tree that grows in the deserts in the south. You'd first have to cross the Moonsea, then over the Dale Lands. So few of the caravan trade routes have their goods transported this far north."
"Kind of reminds me of those poison blobs we found at the Mantor's Library," notes Luyuriel.
"I will keep enough on hand in reserve for you if you need to come back later," affirms the bishop. "If there is nothing else, I really must get back to work."
"That would be all," answers Luyuriel. "We'll leave you to your work."
Luyuriel and Phuu leave the temple and head over to the council chambers to see if there's any new job postings for them to acquire more money. There were no new ones and the two of them were still in the process of recovering the Cadorna heirlooms and reconquering Sokol Keep on Thorn Island.
"Zombies or gnolls, Phuu?" asks the elf.
"Zombies first. Since they will be easier to dispatch," responds Phuu.
"Off to the docks, then," declares Luyuriel.
The ferry service to Thorn Island is readily found at the docks; still not too many vessels utilizing the harbor. The two of them get on and are taken across the waters. The ferry ties off at the stoney beach on Thorn Island. Though there is no fog this time, the atmosphere remains dismal. The walls of the keep are readily visible in the distance; it looks even more dilapidated in the clear light of day. They go up to the gate where they found the dead body. The rotting gate is barely hanging on its rusty hinges. Everything is encrusted with a thin film of salt from years of exposure to constant sea-breeze. The gate is partly leaning inward and doesn't appear to be locked or barricaded. Seeing as conventional means of opening the gate would be pointless, Luyuriel kicks the gate while Phuu keeps his holy symbol ready. With a delayed groan, the gate falls inward, crashing to the cobbled floor of the keep. As the dust clears, they see a large band of skeletons and zombies turn and begin to shamble towards them.

Episode 23:
Luyuriel takes out her quarterstaff and attacks the closest undead, knocking it in the jaw. Phuu swings his mace at the zombie and sends it to the ground, ceasing its advance. He then strikes out at the next zombie, but overswings and misses. Luyuriel whips her quarterstaff around, but the weapon moves too quickly and misses its mark. The two zombies rend at Luyuriel with ragged nails while the skeletons jab at Phuu with cracked, rusty short swords. Both become slightly injured by the attacks. Phuu goes after one of the skeletons with his mace, but the skeleton's stench causes him to be taken aback. Luyuriel swings her quarterstaff at the zombie and nails it in the knee. Unfortunately, the zombies are undeterred by Luyuriel's staff and lean in with gaping mouths. She manages to push back, avoiding their bites. The skeletons continue hacking listlessly at Phuu, who manages to avoid their blows. The priest crushes one of the skeletons' head with one swing of his mace. Luyuriel flips her quarterstaff at the zombie and cracks its jaw. Just then, the other zombie moves in and chomps down on her, causing her to cry out in surprise. Phuu continues to avoid the attacks from the skeletons and lands a hit on the one he was fighting. There is a dry clatter as the skeleton crumbles under Phuu's mace. Luyuriel manages another strike on the zombie, but it takes the blow and continues the advance. They continue to gnash and claw at the elf, the second inflicting another wound on her. One of the skeletons swipes at Phuu, hitting him with the old sword. Phuu attacks one of the remaining skeletons with his mace and crushes it.
Suddenly, three more skeletons slowly move to their location from behind a central building some 40 to 50 feet away. The zombies are unrelenting as Luyuriel lands another hit on one of them, managing to keep them at arm's length. Phuu is able to avoid the last skeleton's attack and counters it; it's damaged, but still putting up a fight. Another zombie sinks its teeth into Luyuriel as Phuu is jabbed with the skeleton's sword. Phuu swings his mace around and the skeleton is finally shattered. Just two more zombies are left; the three additional skeletons are still moving slowly toward them. Luyuriel tries to finish off the zombie and trips on a rock. The zombies press onward, but Luyuriel avoids further damage. Phuu trips as well when he attempts to aid the elf. Luyuriel manages to take out the zombie's legs and it falls to the ground. However, it continues to crawl and grasp at her legs. With Phuu's help, the two of them double-teams the zombie and finally finishes it off. The last zombie starts going for Phuu, who sends a mighty swing of his mace at the creature's face. The zombie splatters as it falls backwards.
The three skeletons are still moving toward them, but they are slow. Luyuriel and Phuu move quickly to avoid them. The keep consists of the outer wall, with most of the internal structures hugging this perimeter. There is a smaller central building ahead of them. There are three doors visible, accessing the structures on the west end of the complex. They can also see a door on the north end, leading into one of the larger buildings.
Luyuriel sweeps with her staff as she and Phuu run to the nearest door on the west end of the complex, tripping a skeleton as they went. The skeleton falls to the ground as the other two lash out at the passing party. The two of them get to the closest door, which is partially smashed open; there is little holding it in place still. Luyuriel peers inside, but little light penetrates. Her eyes have difficulty discerning anything in the gloom in contrast with the sunlit courtyard. She kicks what's left of the door open and it falls inward, stirring up dust. All that greeted them on the other side were barren shelves; it was the remnants of a storeroom, long disused.
