Author's Note and Disclaimer:
This guide was initially conceived in early 2007 and posted later that year. Three years of updates have since passed, and also three years of my own changing views of the game. I have updated this guide periodically to reflect that, but I do feel that it falls short in many ways and, while it is acceptable for making feasible characters, like any guide, it is a generalization. Your individual character needs may be different depending on your money, equipment, and experience with RO.

Also note that it is difficult for me to keep up with all the new gear that is implemented, and so this guide will never show all possible gear combinations. This guide also does not take transcending into account in terms of recommended gear, this guide is for crusaders only, not for paladins.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sera's Crusader Guides -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Index:
* Shield Build [SBSC]
* Grand Cross [GCSC]
* Sacrifice [SCSC]
* Agility Spear [ASSC]
* Update Log [ULSC]

Crusader classes in general are not recommended for new or poor players, as they are very heavily gear dependent classes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Shield Crusader --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[SBSC]

- This character levels primarily through the use of Shield Boomerang, usually under the influence of a Soul Link.
- The Crusader Soul Link doubles the damage dealt by Shield Boomerang and makes it so it will always hit its target.
- This build is not recommended for new or poor players, since it takes good gear to put it even close to being on par with some other classes.

Some notes:

- Shield Boomerang is affected by the weight and upgrade level of the shield. The heavier the shield, the more damage is dealt.
- Things that add attack as a solid number will not affect your damage, this includes things such as: Porcellio Armor, Pirate Dagger, Andre Cards
- Things that will add attack power include % modifiers and anything that will add strength, dexterity, or luck. Note that the additional attack from dexterity and luck is rather insignificant compared to the damage added by strength, and should not really be built around unless it will do something such as bring you from 2-hit-KO to 1-hit-KO.
- Ice Pick does not affect it.
- Brocca does not affect it.
- Memory of Thantos card does not affect it.
- Anything that is calculated based on weapon will usually not affect it, since the shield is considered the weapon and not your actual weapon.

Stats:

Str: Enough for at least 120 final strength.
Int: Enough for at least 54 or another multiple of 6 with blessing.
Agi: Enough to achieve 165 attack speed while unlinked, or 182.5 attack speed while linked.
Dex: If you plan on leveling with linked boomerang, you theoretically do not need any dexterity. If you plan on using other means, or participating in PvP/WoE and/or cannot depend on a link, 47+3 should be about right.
Luk: 1+5 for minimum, if you have some extra stats left over, you could go for 5+5 for the attack bonus. I would only recommend this if you have stats left over, and I would not recommend it be seriously thought about when building the character because the attack that it adds is so small that it is largely irrelevant in this case.
Vit: This is a good dump for all remaining points. After you get your strength, intelligence, and agility to their proper levels, you will probably want to put the points into vit. When I calc'd it for 165 attack speed, I got about 60 total vit.

Skills:

10 HP Recovery
10 Bash
10 Provoke
10 Endure
9 Magnum Break

10 Faith
10 Auto-Guard
10 Shield Reflect
3 Smite
5 Shield Boomerang
5 Defending Aura
1 PecoPeco Riding
5 Cavalier Mastery

Requirements:

Moderate Gear Requirement
Soul Linker with a Level 5 Crusader Soul Link

Weapons:

- Assaulter Spear (Tierra Gorge Battle Grounds Reward)
- 2x race 2xelement Main Gauches
- 3x Orc Lady 1x Vadon for High Orcs

Shields:

- Cross Shield [1]
Should be carded with racial reduction cards such as Thara Frog Card unless you require the Tamruan Card (+10% damage with shield boomerang) to OHKO your target monster.
You can use a Horn Carded shield if you are leveling on ranged monsters such as Penomenas.

Armor:

- Elemental Armor is a good idea if you are leveling on a map where you will be hit by elemental attacks.
- Anything that will give you more HP/SP or raise your strength. Note that +atk things such as the Picky and Porcellio cards will not increase the damage dealt by shield boomerang, however you could still potentially benefit from the +1 strength added by the picky card. Roda Frog Card is a good choice for the SP.
- Using a Mineral Carded Legionnaire Plate armor would be a good idea, since you are not affected by the decreased attack, and it would provide the most possible 'hard' defence out of anything.
- If you have high enough intelligence, you may find the Egnigem Cenia card useful, however keep in mind that in most cases, you will not get more than +2 strength out of it.

- Recommended armors include Odin's Blessing if you are using the set, Legionnaire Plate, Chainmail.

Garment:
- Raydric Carded Muffler
- Aliot Carded Muffler if you need the strength bonus and can deal with the extra 20% damage you will be receiving.

Footgear:
- Vidar's Boots

Note: I have used Boots here because it is an easily aquirable high-defence gear, however it is the card that is important, not necessarily what it is carded in. Greaves are the ideal footgear, however, as the defence of the gear increases, things such as class restrictions also increase.
- Sohee Carded Boots
- Martyr Carded Boots
- Gold Acidus Carded Boots
- Verit Carded Boots
- +9 Firelock Soldier Carded Boots
- Zombie Slaughter Carded Boots to use with Ragged Zombie Ring

Accessories:

- Medal of Honor (Swordsman) - These should be imperative to get
- The Sign
- Tarou Carded Ring (If used with a Cramp Carded Headgear)
- Mantis Carded Ring
- Ragged Zombie Ring
- If you do not need the strength bonus, you can wear a Quve + Lude card. The chance that you will not need the strength bonus is very slim, but all the same, if you wear Quve + Lude carded clips, it is the same as wearing a Willow Carded headgear.

Until level 90, you can use clips instead of rings.

Headgear:

- Alice Doll [1]
- Marionette Doll [1]
- Magni's Cap if worn with the set.
- Dress Hat [1]
- Feather Beret

- Robo Eye
- Masquerade
- Sigurn's Wings

- Spare Card
- Evolved Pipe

Useful Cards are anything that will give you more SP, HP, or Strength:
- Cramp
- Blue Acidus
- Seyren Windsor (On the off chance you have a +10 Marionette Doll)
- Carat
- Willow
- Vanberk

I used a Greedy Alice Doll most of the time.

Leveling places:

- Parasite
- Isis
- Bathories
- West Orc Village High Orcs
- Penomenas
- CT High Orcs
- Anubis (Takes a lot to kill one, but up to a certain point, they're not bad experience)
- Bio3 Sniper (95+ and Defending Aura)
- Bio2 Thief, Archer, Acolyte (Note: This is higher end leveling as well. The map is unpleasent and death is frequent, however the experience isn't horrendous)
- Rachel Sanctuary 1
- Moscovia?

- CT High Orcs and Penomenas are primary experience maps, Anubis could be considered so as well, but I did not level there very long, as I did not play a strict shield build, and I did not have enough HP to survive the higher-end of their Sonic Blow, nor did I have an appropriate weapon for them.
- Isis is a much easier map, though the experience and spawn are notable slower.
- West Orc Village is easier than Clock Tower High Orcs, though the spawn is much lower. In theory, it has a higher spawn, but if you actually play the maps, CTHO is a much much smaller map in terms of area, so the concentration of Orcs is higher.
- Penomenas are very good money. Coral usually sells well and the card is very valuable. The money you can gain here usually puts this as the ideal spot to level, though CTHO is better exp/hr. Penomenas are also ranged, I would recommend using a Tamruan or Orc Warrior carded shield here, since with DA the Penomenas should not do very much damage to you, the Tamruan will increase the damage dealt, and the Orc Warrior card will reduce the damage taken from Cramps.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Grand Cross Crusader --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[GCSC]

- This is a casting character.
- This character is not recommended for new players, as you have to play a swordsman that is very nearly pure intelligence. Most players will leech this character from swordsman to crusader.

Stats:

"Balanced"

23+17 Strength
1+2 Agility
58+7 Vitality
99+16 Intelligence
67+13 Dexterity
9+5 Luck

"Pure"

1+17 Strength
1+2 Agility
1+7 Vitality
99+16 Intelligence
99+13 Dexterity
9+5 Luck

Or more abstractly:

Low-High Strength
Low Agility
Mid-High Vitality
Very High Intelligence
Mid-High Dexterity
Minimum Luck

I would personally recommend a build that has high dexterity and intelligence.

There are a number of build variations.
- Intelligence is the most important stat, it contributes the most to the damage you will be doing.
- Strength also affects your damage to a noticable degree, but much less so than int.
- Dexterity is your cast time.
- Vitality is how much HP you will have, which is important when mobbing and receiving damage from the knockback.
- A high damaging build would have as much Int/Str as possible, but it would probably cast slower and be more concerned about HP.
- You will want to have at least 120 intelligence, as the SP regeneration formula changes beneficially at this point.

Skills:

10 HP Recovery
10 Bash
10 Provoke
10 Endure
9 Magnum Break

10 Faith
6 Holy Cross
10 Grand Cross
1 Cure
3 Divine Protection
5 Demon Bane
10 Heal
3 Auto-Guard
1 Pecopeco Riding

0 Points left over

Options:
- You can put the 3 points from Auto-Guard into Cavalier Mastery, either way this is unimportant in my opinion.

Requirements:
Low Relative Gear Requirement
Priest Slave

Suggested equipment:
You'll basically want to look for things that add Int, Str, ATK, reduction from Demi-Human monsters, or reduction from holy property attacks.

Weapon:
- Double Diligent Haedonggum (Zipper Bear Card) Note: Be careful if planning to use this. You'll get the most damage out of it, but it will hurt your SP.
- Double Hurricane Haedonggum (Andre Card) - This is the standard weapon
- Double Wolverine Haedonggum (Wolf Card) - This is for poor people
- Bazerald
- Excalibur
Anything else that adds high +ATK or Int would be suitable.

Shield:
- Stone Bucklers and Valkyrian Shields
- Any 30% Racial depending on enemies fought, Khalitzburg, Thara Frog, and Teddy Bear cards would be good.
- If Heal is maxed, a Rejuvenating Shield may be an option, though I dislike the delay from the skill

Armor:
- Angeling Carded Armor
- Archdam Carded if used with the rest of the set
- Baby Desert Wolf Carded Armor
- Rocker Carded Armor

(Anything that adds Int or makes your armor Holy Property would be good)

Accessories:
- Spiritual Ring
- Earrings
- Rosaries
- Zerom Carded Gloves
- The Sign

Footgear:
- Sohee Carded Boots
- Eggyra Carded Boots
- Experience Boots
- +9 Firelock Soldier Carded Boots
- Verit Carded Boots
- Martyr Carded Boots
- Vidar's Boots

Garment:
- Immune Muffler

Headgear:
- Pisces Helm/Diadem
- +9 Carat Carded headgear
- Crown of Mistress
- Fricca's Circlet
- Ramen Hat
- Apple of Archer
- Feather Beret
- Tiara
- Crown (note that the Tiara and Crown are now slottable)
- Halo

- Robo Eyes

- Well Chewed Pencil
- Pirate Dagger
- Spare Card
- Evolved Pipe?

Leveling Places:
Start off in Glast Heim Chivalry 1, you can move to Chivalry 2 after a while. Other places to try would be Dark Frames and Anubis. Nameless Island and Odin's Temple may be options for the very well geared.
The Niffleheim repeatable experience quests are good experience. Killing Loli Ruris.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sacrifice Crusader --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[SCSC]

Stats:

23+17 Strength
1+14 Agility
93+7 Vitality
2+6 Intelligence
99+13 Dexterity
9+5 Luck

7 Points left over

Or more abstractly:

Low Strength (only for weight limit)
No Agility
at least 100 Vitality
No Intelligence
Maximum Dexterity or enough for 150 with Mjolnir
No Luck

Skills:

10 HP Recovery
10 Bash
10 Provoke
10 Endure
9 Magnum Break

10 Faith
10 Auto-Guard
6 Holy Cross
3 Shield Smite
3 Shield Boomerang
5 Shield Reflect
5 Sacrifice
4 Grand Cross
1 Peco Peco Riding

2 Points left over

Options:

- Cavalier Mastery
- Cure
- Smite
- Defending Aura behaves incorrectly when used in conjuction with sac, it will decrease the movement speed of the target and reduce damage they receive by 80, not 80% as it should. It is good to avoid it for this reason.

Requirements:
Someone to level you
Lowest gear requirement for crusaders, no special gear involved, but you do need to have standard defensive gears.

Weapon:
Quad Vital Mace
Quad Dexterous Mace
Fortune Sword
Mjolnir

Shield:
Valkyrian Shield [1] or Stone Buckler [1]
Thara Frog Card (Demi-humans and WoE)
Penomena Card (Formless)
Teddy Bear Card (Undead)
Orc Warrior Card (Brute)
Khaliztburg Card (Demon)
Alice Card (Boss monsters)

Accessories:
Alligator Rosaries
Errende Ebeecee Carded Accessory (Casts pneuma on self)
Safety rings
Ring of Mustle + Double-Forced Ring
Rosaries
Zerom Carded Gloves
Spore Carded Necklaces
Medal of Honor (Swordsman)

Footgear:

Boots [1]

Vidar's Boots

Experience Cards
Martyr Card
+9 and Firelock Soldier Card

Armor:
Odin's Blessing [1] if using the set
Anything socket enchanted with +3 dexterity

Marc Card or Evil Druid Card for WoE
Can use a mineral card, since you are not affected by the decreased attack, and it would provide the most possible 'hard' defence out of anything.
Pasana Card
Bathory Card
Dokebi Card
Swordfish Card
PecoPeco Card

Garment:
Muffler [1]
Heavenly Maiden Robe [1]

Raydric Card

Low-Mid Vitality
Low-Mid Intelligence
Mid Dexterity
No Luck

Skills:

10 HP Recovery
10 Bash
10 Provoke
10 Endure
9 Magnum Break

10 Faith
10 Holy Cross
10 Spear Mastery
10 Spear Quicken
1 Pecopeco Riding
5 Cavalier Mastery
1 Cure

2 Points left over

Options:
- Put the remaining two points into Divine Protection
- The build can be modified to have a higher intelligence to possibly make use of the auto-cast features of the weapons

Suggested equipment:

Weapon:

Triple Carded Tridents
You'll want them to be carded 2x race 1x element in most cases, though it seems 1x race 1x element 1x size will get more damage in some situations.

Be careful when using Hydra Cards because the Alice Doll headgear slightly undercuts some of the potential damage when coupled with a Hydra Card.

- Assaulter Lance
- Zephyrus
- Brionac
- Hellfire
- Ice Lance
- Crescent Scythe
- Gae Bolg
- Longinus's Spear
- Ahlspiess
- Bill Guisarme
