Some of these I'm able to figure out like the Maya/mother one and a few others, but one I'm particularly curious about is when it just says "Sasquatch Hydra!!!"

There's a second line related to that same thing, anyone know the pun/joke behind it?

I always thought it was just poor translations.

Even many of the ones that do make sense just scream "ENGRISH!!!".

Well, yes, I know they're poorly translated jokes from japanese and korean. What I'm wondering is what the original pun/joke is in japanese and/or korean.

For instance, the maya/mother one, the name "Maya" means "motherly" in japanese or something like that.

So what's the Sasquatch Hydra pun?

Far as I remember, there wasn't a 'legal' way to change them yourself.

It involves editing the client, yes, but even if you edited them, it would not tell me the meaning of Sasquatch Hydra.

All of the original jokes were all really, really awful word jokes. They probably didn't translate very well.

They should make it a contest to come up with some seriously groan worthy jokes to use.

There are so many things the GMs could make into contests to improve the game. Anything from updating the old website character descriptions to fixing NPC dialog. What else.... updating pet talk scripts, as mentioned here, fixing Frost Joke and Dazzler to make sense and actually amuse...

But they won't do it. First off, they have that annoying policy of not offering prizes for community enhancing "contests". Remember the old commercial contest? That's basically why it failed so hard. That policy makes it difficult to get serious entries to anything. People like recognition, even if the rewards are meager at best. Anything from a few Battle Manuals to a one month Subscription or a hundred Kafra Points would make a huge difference.

Secondly, Gravity really can't commit it seems. They've mentioned redoing the website in the past and I remember the idea of having players submit text was brought up... But that fizzled out and never happened. On the old forums, the new Pet Talk Script for Green Maiden was stickied but was immediately forgotten by anyone in power. That's just sort of how things work around here. I wish it weren't true, but it's been replayed time and time again.

What is the exception to this... That old quest contest from ages ago and the headgear contest, I suppose. But we don't even have all the headgears implemented yet (though, oddly, other official servers have the iRO contest headgears....). Not really shining examples of well run contests.

My assumption has always been that the concept was a play off of that awkward silence being compared to ice (you've heard of an "ice breaker" at a party or when meeting new people right?)...

That would be cool though. Thing is, it would need to be judged carefully (certainly not a community vote), because the jokes are supposed to be terrible (and if you put it to a vote, too many people wouldn't realize that).

Editing your jokes is a really easy way to get yourself banned because everyone sees your jokes when you use them, and it effectively proves client modification to everyone nearby.

True that. I think editing the frost joke text shouldn't be top priority, although, I'd laugh if someone got banned for it. It isn't exactly invasive or game-altering.

It shouldn't be a problem if someone is following the rules of chat (Slurs or swearing). Apparently spamming isn't bannable on valk (Even if its advertising websites).

Also wondering IF someone were to get banned for it would it just be a temp account ban?

We really should be given more liberty to change things, I mean grf editing is one of the easiest things to do. We can already edit skins (and with that, loading screens) so why not frost jokes as well?
