Regarding the HP thing, sometimes I swear this works when low HP, but other times not so much..

We used to hand tame everything for server transfers, so we've done a freakish amount of taming, we stopped doing the lower HP thing and just dump tames at it and I can't really confirm that HP matters at all. There were times that an Alice tamed in 1 tame, and the next day a Spore took me 160 tames to work (seriously that shift sucked).

If it works for you, then that is your unique voodoo so run with it.

Then who can? How can we get more clarity on this.

I used to tame Alice and sell her once a month for 50m back on Loki. Zealotus about the same. I swear by 1HP so much that I won't test it to prove it lol. 1-2 tames, if it fails try another monster with 1HP. Dumping tames seems brutal...

edit: no idea what impact renewal had on taming if any

I personally don't tame myself (don't trust my luck with the little wheel thingie), but I do partner up with a friend of mine and help her tame monsters by lowering their HP for her while she uses sense and then the pet tame once the monster's HP is low enough. However, we've noticed the inconsistencies in the "Lower HP = more likely to tame" theory when we went pet taming at the start of the month. We were taming bonguns and munaks and on more than one occasion, we had two bonguns overlap with each other (one that I'd already lowered the HP of, the other spawned near us and hopped over to join in with the fun), and my friend used a tame and just clicked on one of the bonguns since she couldn't tell which was which while they were overlapped on the same cell. Twice she caught the bongun that I hadn't attacked at all, and she caught them on the first try.

She's also wasted a crapload of tames on trying to tame monsters that we have lowered the HP of too. And let's not talk about sohee taming... ~_~ We've yet to try Shinobi taming, but I don't think anything can be more annoying than Sohee taming with their ability to suicide on you while you're using tames on it.

Actually, when two monsters (or players) overlap, the one coming new to the group is the one you target.
That has nothing to do with "taming both".
When they're exactly on the same spot and you can't hold them apart, you never even tried to tame the damaged Bongun, because you automaticly targeted the new spawned ones.

I don't know if it's a myth or not. But it can't harm you to lower the hp beforwards just in case.

Oh we did try to tame the lower HP one afterwards and failed miserably. Forgot to mention that; but that's why I don't think HP really matters sometimes. The higher HP Bongun, we got on the first try, while the lower HP one stubbornly refused to be tamed. And if what you say is correct that we'll always automatically target the Bongun with the higher HP when they overlap like that, it makes me wonder if lowering HP even matters since we grabbed two Bonguns in that manner (i.e. two cases of a second bongun coming up and overlapping with a bongun already attacking me).
