Thief to Assassin at Job 40 or 50?

I see a lot of debate on changing from your first job class to 2-1 at 40 or 50. Some people wait until 50 for extra points to have in first job class, whereas others change at 40 to get to 2-1 faster. You're still getting the same amount of points per level no matter what... so then I suppose it's about putting more points into skills for one class until advancing to another. Don't you then lose points you could put in your 2-1 class'es abilities that ideally do more damage? I'm going Thief to Dagger Assassin. That being said, is it honestly worth leveling all the way to Job50 for that?

I think I can clear up some confusion for you with one simple fact. You CANNOT spend first classe skill points on second class skills.
This means if you goto job lvl 50 but only spend 45 of the 49 points you cannot put those extra 4 points into Right hand Mastery as an Assasin.
That being said NO you don't have to get to Job lvl 50 as a thief. Only thing you want to make sure of is that you have at least 1 into envenom and 2 in Hiding to unlock Assasin skills.
I would go for Sin ounce I was at Job lvl 44 as a thief. This is because I max Double Attack, Improve Dodge, Steal and Envenom, with 2 in Hiding and 1 in Detoxify. Envenom is good for 2 reasons. Helps the Sin skill Throw Poison Dagger for one and when fighting guys with higher def it's good for lowering it a bit so they die faster. Plus the fact that the only thief skills that take sp really are steal and envenom. You don't really use Hiding as a thief ( you will when your a Sin for GrimTooth perhaps).

Very helpful, thank you. I planned on going dagger for my Assassin, though. I still might do katar. Unsure at this point since I'm just starting and I'm only 11/1 hahaha.

The only difference really between the 2 is stat build. Skill Builds can be pretty much the same. This is because a DD sin gets, R&L Hand Mastery and that only uses 10 points. The other fact is that Sin Poison skills aren't that good so they are mostly a waste of time. Sin could very easily do this:
R&L Hand Mastery 10
Katar Mastery 10
Sonic Blow 10
Grimtooth 5
Cloaking 3 (2 needed for GT but 3 needed to be useful)
And with all that you still have 11 skill points to spend.
Stat wise DD sin's get more Dex and almost no Luk, Katar sins get less Dex but do need luk unless going for the Equip Crit build.

And by DD Sin you mean Double Dagger... correct? The only difference really between the 2 is stat build. Skill Builds can be pretty much the same. Also, thanks again for the info. I've pretty much decided I'm going dagger. I finally was able to access my old account with an 80 sin I'll make Katar since he has Katar Mastery maxed out, and I sent the two carded Damascus to my level 27/19 Thief. Hahaha.
