However, there is a failure chance going from +4 to +5, and when that failure happens your item degrades from +4 to +3.

Mind you im have vip status on ymir server and i was using enriched elu at the time!!
Vip and server don't make a difference.
I think the wiki is still accurate:
http://irowiki.org/w...finement_System
That is, even with enriched you have a 10% chance to fail going from +4 to +5 (and only a 10% chance to succeed going from +9 to +10).
I feel your pain, though. Last night I tired to +9 a Hurricane Fury from +7. Thankfully it's still +7 (after 110 ore...).
Then I went from 0 > +9 on a stupid Laural Wreath in one shot... Sometimes this game toys with us.

When they changed the old upgrade rates, no one was informed and the community was extremely angry.

Probably just bad luck, but we honestly don't know when the GMs tweak numbers or have an error.

I have a feeling though when ever the enriched hammer NPC event happens, the mighty hammer NPC HD ore success rate drops lol. Again, larger sample size needed though...

Lol yeah you are right on the 4 to 3 upgrade. I was in a rush to post cause of work. I'm just curious if someone has had worse luck trying to go to 10 on a single item. So far I'm 0 for 12 on the beret. Overall I'm like maybe 1 for 40 trying to 10 itemz.
I have 3 +9 items to my name, over 4 accounts. Never had a +10 or above. Played since 2006.

Start at +7
+7 > +8 > +7 > +6 > +5 > +4 > +3 > +4 > +5 > +6 > +7 > +8 > +7 > +6 > +5 > +4 > +3 etc
Then I run out of ores, stop at +7 and restock.
Then I get to +9 on my first go, with a ton of spare ores left.

The diference is 10% for +8 and +9 and no bonus to +10 try's.
making instead of 20%-->30% to +8 and +9.. and TAKING IN ACCOUNT, 100 KP give you 10 HD ores and 100 KP give you 5 E.ore..
There basically NO DIFERENCE in the chance to upgrade! if was doubled the chance it would matter... but 10% don't matter at all, and don't help in nothing to plus 10.
Saying that, what matter is how much you are lucky.

In the long run there is a difference; you will get a lot more +9s and +10s with Enriched than with HD.

20 E.Elu= 4 box right? I spended 82 HD Elu to put 2 itens +9 meaning about 40 each that is 4 boxes each.Yup, I upgraded many items to +9 using less than 20 Enriched Elu per equipment. However i had bad luck with my second White Wing Boots (Used like 150 Enriched to +9 it)
Meaning it's lucky only, both are the same.
the biggest diference in the enriched is that to ugrade from +4~6 to +5~7 the chances are bigger BUT again it's lucky because i broke lots of +4 level 4 weapows[Staff's of destruction] trying to put +7 being with enriched 90%
So if lucky is what matter's the one that come more of itens is best, because more attempts.

Except for valk, base upgrade rates have never been changed, unless you mean at server launch pretty much. Its always been 60/40/40/20/20/10. There was a commonly held belief that blacksmiths got a 10% bonus, that turned out to be wrong.

In the long run they are the same.
I wish Codface or Clogon or any awesome math simulator guys to come here and prove you wrong.
No they are NOT the same. If you take a sample size of let's say 500 Enriched vs 1000 HD, you will get more +9s with Enriched than HD almost all the time.
From hardcore upgraders, they will always prefer Enriched over HD.

All the items below were +7 before the upgrade
+9 Valk Shield(x4) (around 60 Elus all 4 shields)
+9 Glorious Suit (10 Elus)
+9 Glorious Boots (2 Elus had luck here xD)
+9 Nid Garb(x2) (around 30 elus)
+9 Glorious Mace (12 Elus)
+9 White Wing Boots (I had really bad luck with this bastard 150+ Elus T_T)
+9 Valk Armor (30 Elus)
+9 Rideword Hat (15 elus dont remember)
In total I used around 309 enrich Elus and still have 41 Enriched Elus left, so in total I burned around 495m to upgrade all these items. Not bad i guess for all these items.
Resuming, making items +9 with Enriched Hammer was easier than using Mighty Hammer. However, getting one to +10 is a different story :3
