I have a tip starting as a mage.
first do the training ground quest as above
Get some kafra transportion tickets by creating many characters. outdated.

Then change job for mage, when you go out of the academy do the mage training quest, get some shells, then
do the metto quest at Yuno to get some gemstones change them for red gemstones at payon.

Finish the mage training quest. You should have 8000 zeny by now and a silk robe. And a nice starting level.


If you can, get to einbroch field 07, and kills porings, poporings, those are usually full of drops, large jellopy and sometime even metalling cards. There is also morroc field 18, culvert sewers lvl 2. and probably a ton more maps to have a nice start.

If you can make a million collecting drops start thinking about mercenaries those are helping a lot

Do I need to be on the same level range of the monster (like if I'm lvl 20 i should kill monsters ranging from lvl 20-40)
to have a greater base/job xp?

Nope, that was a renewal thing. The level difference doesn't affect the experience in classic.
