Well, here's how pre-renewal levels correspond to karate ranks:

1-49: White belt
50-59: Yellow belt
60-69: Orange belt
70-74: Green belt
75-79: Blue belt
80-84: Brown belt
85-89: Black stripe
90+: Black belt

The level ranges for each belt rank are determined using the EXP charts. The EXP required to level up increases sharply whenever you are promoted to a new higher color belt.

And since a level 39 character is still a white belt, there's nothing wrong with him calling himself a newbie.

90+ is nothing like that. the exp doesnt scale the same like any other level range

I guess that makes my guy in Classic a full on White Belt Acolyte (11/6 and he is not FS but I will drop IA's if and when I can)! I would so love to get a friend or two of mine into this game.

96+ is Black Belt + for grinding.

Not thumb sized, he simply cropped the picture. Thats 100% in game size. I can see the pic just fine on my end.

90-94: 1st Dan
95-98: 2nd Dan
Either 99 base or 70 job: 3rd Dan
Both 99 base AND job 70: 4th Dan

The higher Dans are generally not attainable by grinding alone, and usually require special requirements. And honestly too many Dan ranks in any martial arts is pointless anyway.
