As far as I know, Taiwanese people generally use traditional Chinese characters while Chinese people generally use simplified Chinese characters.
I could be wrong, but that's what I've noticed. (The Chinese part of my family came from China, but I can read and write traditional characters better for some reason. O_o )
Even if you did not know a traditional character, the component of the character would give you a clue as to what the word was. The simplified system has removed this making it easier to get into because all the characters have a simplified look but harder to expand your knowledge upon because there is no longer a correlation between components of the word and the words' meaning.
The proliferation of simplified chinese for printing characters is due to the Commies killing or chasing off all the smart people and replacing them with peasants who could not read or write.
Printing should be done in traditional, simplification of characters should only exist for cursive writing.
