So today I felt like playing this classic game on my fancy new computer. I go to the RO website, download the game, install, start the patcher.. all seems to be going well. After I choose the setup I would like, I click okay and instantly there is an error. I can hear the intro music in the background but all I see is this big error telling me "Unexpected program error occurred !!" etc... with the option to copy or exit.

I copy it and exit, try it again, same thing happens. Then I tried all of the obvious things like running as administrator, using compatibility mode, uninstalling/re-installing. None of it helped. Im not sure if my antivirus is having any effect, its Symantec Endpoint Protection. I have no control over disabling it or adding exceptions (I did not put it on my computer). I have no idea what to do at this point and I cant find any other forum posts with a solution so please try to figure this out so I can play again!

Here is the copy of the error if it helps at all:

I'm not up to date with the list of common gravity handler errors and what they mean, but Inu and Ren are, and one of them will probably see this today and identify which issue this is.

The first thing you should try doing, though, to set the RO patcher as admin (right-click->properties, compatibility tab, check run as admin) and run it again, and see if we get anywhere.

Disable UAC.

I'm not sure if this is a UAC-related problem in the first place, but, I do not recommend users disable UAC just to run RO; UAC is a security feature, and most users are better off with it enabled.

Better solutions to UAC-related problems are to set everything related to RO to run as admin, and/or move the RO folder outside of program files (both steps may be needed, depending on the details of the user's setup, though most users only need to run everything as admin)

I was posting that in a hurry (at work), I should have said:

Disable UAC. Try running it again, if it launches with no issues then figuring out the fix will be much easier.

Obviously re-enable UAC afterwards.

I have had UAC off the entire time, also I have been running everything as admin.

EDIT: I'll add that I thought I could disable my antivirus but apparently not. Its Symantec Endpoint Protection and I cant disable it or add exceptions. I hope this isnt causing any problems.

Asked Inu if it was one of the errors fixed by the special client files, it's not:

No, thats something with ntdll.dll which is insanely hard to diagnose.

So we have no idea how to fix this.

Easiest option would be to just jump the gun and do a In-Place Upgrade. (Run your Windows CD from within Windows and tell it to do an "Upgrade"). It'll just repair your install.
