Pacific Rim: Amara

Okay, so if I had to choose between watching the Bayformers movies and Uprising, I'd gladly sit through Uprising again. The movie wasn't bad, but it certainly lost the spirit of the first Pacific Rim.

Uprising failed to flesh out its characters out enough for us to feel any sort of connection to them. The first Pacific Rim, although the overall plot was cliche, had a good balance of character development with all its characters. Even the Russian and Chinese Rangers in the first Pacific Rim were presented in a way that allowed us to connect with them despite barely getting much screentime, much less names. In Uprising, we get introduced to the cadets of the PPDC, but so much of the film kept showcasing the major plot that we barely get a chance to get to know all of the cadets. In addition, the first Pacific Rim did enough to help us get familiarized with the Jaegers that by the end of the movie, I could identify all four of the main ones by name. With Uprising, I could only recall Gipsy Avenger out of the 4 main Jaegers introduced and that was only because its design referenced Gipsy Danger from the first Pacific Rim. There were 3 other Jaegers featured besides the main four, but they barely had much presence aside from November Ajax chasing after Scrapper like Dr. Robotnik going after Sonic.

The story itself had potential as there was a decent nugget of a concept to allow it to follow the story of the first Pacific Rim. However, the script suffered greatly from having 4 writers working on it (compared to the first Pacific Rim's screenplay, which was a collaboration between del Toro and Beacham). You could tell there was WAY too many cooks in the kitchen when it came to Uprising as there were so many subplots happening alongside the main plot. It felt like a TV series being condensed into roughly 2 hours, which is a real shame. The fact that del Toro and Beacham's scripts for Uprising were thrown out in favor of this rehash of the first movie just makes it frustrating how much better the sequel could've been. They should've just produced Uprising as a TV series and then have del Toro and Beacham produce the film sequel later. I don't understand the rush to make a Pacific Rim sequel if the two key people of the movie aren't even on the project. Did they really think their writers could be as good or surpass the success that del Toro and Beacham got with the original Pacific Rim? Just boggles the mind.

The original Pacific Rim had a feeling of heaviness throughout the film, from the movement of the Jaegers and kaiju themselves to the sense of doom in its story. In Uprising, all that heaviness was thrown out the window in favor of Evangelion-level of jumping around. Pacific Rim was meant to be an homage to giant robot and kaiju anime, not be another one of them.

I really wish that they had chosen other settings for Uprising than just China and Japan. I honestly couldn't tell that they were in Japan for the later part of the movie because I couldn't see any Japanese lettering in the city. The China and Japan settings they chose just blended too well together. If it wasn't for Mt. Fuji, I'd have thought they were in China the whole time.

Finally, lay off the frickin' slow-mo editing. It was almost Bayformers level of overuse.

Basically too rushed of a plot? It was under two hours, which seems short for that kind of movie. It was a fun action flick, though.

If they really wanted to make Uprising work, they should've split it up into two movies. That would've given them more time to properly introduce the new characters and flesh out the stories better.
