Note: The main purpose of this guide is to give directions to new players who wanted to try Classic and players which are stuck after finishing the Janeway Quests. It is certainly not complete and I may add more information later. Until then, I hope this helps.
Getting started (solo or team):
Training ground:
It is not easy to get started on a new server with no zeny. But if you know the ways to a fast progress in the game you can overcome that easily. That's what we'll be focusing on, to assure a smooth leveling.
You'll first start as a novice and, whether you are an experienced player or not, you must apply the training ground or it'll become difficult very fast!
Progress through the basic training until you are sent to the monster fields. It is not necessary to go through all the steps of the training before this point.
The first thing you have to do now is to find the npc called Jumping Janeway. The npc will give you the very simple quest of killing 10 Porings.
The reward will be a very decent dagger and to instantly reach the level 10 base and level 10 job, allowing you to immediately change class as long as you spend all your skill points.
Now talk to the npc in the north then talk to the Valkyrie looking npc right there (there's no need to go for the Quizz test since you'll get Free tickets for transportation and access to storage from the Valkyrie).
Asgard Village:
There are many things you can find in the village which you can read about on the wiki page here.
What you need to know for now is that you should always talk to the Kafra NPC in the middle of the alley if you don't have a Prontera Warp Pass on you. It's a free warp to the capital city Prontera. Whenever you use it, all you have to do is talk to one of the Kafra employee to get it back.
You can find an Asgard Teleporter in every town which makes it a good gathering point.
The first thing you wanna do, even before changing your class is to complete the Asgard Training Village Beginner Equipment quest. All you have to do it talk to some npcs in the different towns (the free transport tickets will be useful here).
Follow my next post if you are playing the game solo or the next ones if you joined the server as a team!
Solo Gameplay :
At this point, if you finished your Beginner Equipment quest, you should be able to complete the Jumping Janeway quests without too many difficulties (you get free potions on each step).
If you're confused about your skills/stats distribution you can always refer to the iROWiki class specific guides
You should now be at level 70, with basic gears and nowhere to go. But we'll take care of this!
What you may not notice at this point is that there are tons of repeatable quest that give you experience. Some are more effective than others depending on your class/current gears/experience. You can find the list for those quests here.
Now here are the leveling options that I would prioritize:
Siroma, easy and effective:
Quest NPC (you can take both at the same time) :
Snowman can be found at the entrance of Ice Dungeon (156,25)
Adventurer's Guild is in Rachel near the entrance to the inn (130,80) If you want an effective leveling route which doesn't require particularly strong gears you would probably want to kill Siromas in Ice Dungeon 1. You may want to use a warper to send you directly outside the cave and make your leveling experience easy (refer to useful alternative characters). Mage class would prefer to max their skills Jupitel Thunder(for wizard) and Lightning Bolt(for sage) Melee physical classes can double their dps if they use wind endow from a sage. Archer classes can use Wind Arrows. Goats, making money while leveling: Quest NPC (you can take both at the same time):
The Bounty Board in Juno(186,148) will give you a killing quest but also a direct warp to the area if you have a quest active.
The Vegetable Farmer in the goat map (82,171) will give you a killing quest but also the option to trade him Antelope Horns for experience. Goats are the most effective when it comes to making money while leveling as a new player with average gears. Blue Herbs and Empty bottles can sell (to other players) for a decent price for common drop items. You can also decide to sell your antelope horns in stead of using them for extra experience. The hard part about dealing with Goats is their relatively high defense, physical classes with critical gears or defense ignoring skills will be effective here. Mage classes can deal with them easily with water skills. Keep in mind that Goats assist each other! Join an Ice Dungeon 3 party: Quest NPC: on the right side of Asgard Village you'l find an NPC that can warp you directly to the 3rd floor of the dungeon and in front of the npc giving you the killing quest. Parties can either be found around the center area of the dungeon or recruiting in Asgard. If you can join a party in Ice Dungeon 3 it will certainly be the most effective leveling way a new player can expect. You will probably need to fulfill some particular role(see Ice dungeon roles in the next post for more details). All the other areas: The repeatable experience quest can give a vague idea of the other leveling places, while those are less popular than the ones above, they can be very effective depending on the class played.
Juperos: Venatus are very strong for a new player but some assassin are used to level in that map even with basic gears.
Magma Dungeon: the high defense of Lava golems makes it an easy target for players who managed to get an Ice Pick. They are also weak to Magic damage.
High Orcs: Even without a killing quest, high orcs are known for being a decent experience source without being too strong. Leveling in High Orcs can be made very easy with a weapon from the Battleground.
Rachel Sanctuary is easily accessible to players with Battleground weapons, the items dropped there can be a decent source of income as well. Common items sell for a decent price to the npc and rare ones are quite valuable. I know I've missed many spots that could be considered decent but I didn't want to extend the list too much. Feel free to explore the world and try to find something that would suit you. Special A priest player leveling solo will be able to level easily with Turn Undead on anubis in the 4th and 5th floor of Sphinx dungeon. This leveling method doesn't make much money and requires some kiting by the player when they have beginner gears.
Playing in a team:
If you have some friends to join you in your Classic adventure then you are in luck. Progression can be made much easier if you know where you are going as a team.
When joining the server you would usually wonder which class combinations will make your gaming experience enjoyable.
If you want to evolve in a fast pace, then the most effective way is to get a team ready for Ice Dungeon 3. The minimum team composition for this is as follow:
Puller: Most classes with either Vit or Flee can pull a certain number of mobs. Having an Aqua armor (Swordfish carded armor) is an easy way to avoid getting frozen by the Ice Titans' Frost Diver.
No one will expect you to pull half of the map with basic gears so just try to mob what you can and make sure to hide once the monster are getting killed.
See Gears to change your experience for the best headgear set on a puller.
roles: walk around to gather mobs/stay alive.
preferably: swordman(vit) class or thief(flee) class.
Support Priest: No particular gears needed. Needs to make sure the puller gets Agi and Kyrie buffs before mobbing, Heal and buff the party, Pneuma the wizard if he is targeted by a Gazeti.
Support Bard: This one can be alted if needed as long as Magic String is kept active.
AoE DPS wizard: Must keep the party protected with ice walls (Ice wall skill at least at level 5 for safety reasons).
Casts Lord of Vermillion on the mobs gathered by the puller. Remove ice walls once the mobs are dead with the sight+sightrasher combo.
A Phen accessory could help in difficult situations.
That is the minimum team for an ID3 party, good additions to the party could be : Dancer (for SP song) and more pullers.
This team composition can work in many other places but ice dungeon gets you great experience thanks to the killing quest.
Miscellaneous
Useful Alternative Characters:
Sometimes, making your alts first will speed up your progression in the game.
Some class builds can also require alts to work properly.
OC/DC Vender:
Since you start the game with no funds, you should make one of these as soon as possible. If you join the game as a team, you only need to have one of these and sell/buy stuff for everyone.
Required skills: Discount 10, Overcharge 10, Vending
Buffer/Warper:
Acolyte buffs are always convenient. If you're farming in a remote area, it's better to have a warper than having to walk all the way.
Required Skills: Blessing 10, Increase Agility 10, Warp Portal
Endow Sage:
Having one of these enchant your weapon with the proper element can boost your dps even with a weapon purchased at the NPC.
Required Skills : All four elemental endow.
Linker:
Specific for certain classes with specific builds. Link dependent builds would include :
Shield Boomerang Crusader
One-Handed Sword Knights
Hindsight Sage
Beast Charge Hunter
Combo Monk (not necessary but very convenient)
Gears to change your experience:
Many equipments can improve your experience in Classic. If there is one that comes on top of all of those, it would be the Witch Pumpkin Hat and Alarm Mask set. It negates the problem of health consumables by making the very cheap and light pumpkins heal for almost as much as white potions.
Witch Pumpkin Hat can be purchased from the Kafra Shop or from other players' vending characters.
Alarm mask can be crafted in a rather difficult quest or randomly from Wrapped Mask which can be easily obtained in bulk during christmas events.
Making Zeny:
As a low level/undergeared player: An effective way without counting on rare items would be to farm empty bottles and try selling them to players.
As a player with average gears and level: The player can either opt to farm monsters with items of high npc value (like Hill Wind) or try and farm Goats for Blue Herbs, Empty Bottles and Antelope Horns which usually sell easily to other players.
As a high level player with decent gears: If you have the experience you can already start to compete on boss farming, you can also try farming Guild Surplus Box. These can be found on Bio Lab 3 monsters, the Challenge dungeon behind prontera church(hard) or by killing the monsters in a guild dungeon (many guilds are welcoming and would invite you if you ask nicely)
note: avoid farming materials for guild supplies except empty bottles and blue herbs, the rest can already be obtained from the Guild Surplus Box.
Thanks to the quest for Headgear crafting it is possible to farm hats ingredients that players could buy for a decent price(check ragial to get an idea). The best is to go for the pupular and useful hats.
You can find a full list of the headgears and their ingredients in here.
Free Transcendence Quest:
If you started playing not so long ago and managed to reach the level 99, you can chose not to pay for transcendence and go for the free quest, just follow the steps here.
