So how many of you would dedicate an hour per play session to be a part of a "helping newbies" thing, where you could get some in-game swag from us for being so helpful? And I mean actually playing with them and showing them what is going on, so they can get into the game and upto lvl 70 of so within a week?

Is an idea that needs refining yet but I think it is a good start to an idea.

Sounds awesome :)
There is already a player-made mentoring service for newbies, so there are definitely players out there who would participate. The player-run service is tucked away on the forums though, a GM-backed in-game thing with maybe some presence in Edens with a signboard etc. would have a lot more use I bet.

Could be verified via being in parties. I think it's a great idea but you'd have to ropd people to make sure they ain't helping each other out with high level chars :)

Absolutely. I always end up coming across a new player in town or on a map and spending most of my time in-game helping them out as it is-- if there were some setup for it I would definitely hop on every day or two and help out for a few hours at a time.

If you are going to help someone it should be because you are a nice person. Not because you brownie point gear. But if you are going to slap on a reward for helping people I certainly wouldn't object. One of the best way I can think of to consistently help new players is to implement an auto-recall trade. ie after an 24 hours whatever gear you lent them is automatically recalled. That way you can point people in the right direction, lend them sample gear without worry of scam. If you are helping a friend you can just openly trade, but when dealing with strangers a auto-recalling loan would be ideal.

I don't know about some of these posts. I don't help people like the OP. I don't think that makes me mean.

I help people who help themselves.

If someone comes up to me and asks for money I tell them where they can hunt empty bottles and the price I will buy them at. If they walk to the next person and ask them for money, I don't dignify that bum with a response anymore.

If someone is trying diligently to sell loots with low value and there are no buyers, I buy. Even if its not something I need. Cause they are trying to earn their money.

If someone walks up to me and asks me for gear I tell them where Eden quest is.

If someone asks for suggestions what gear they should save up for and buy or hunt to make their archer strong, I'll paw through my storage and pull out a burning bow I wasn't using and hand it to them to keep, then tell them about Orc Archer bow/etc that they can look forward to.

People who are lazy and asking for handouts don't deserve them imo. If you haven't any shame in begging then I haven't any sympathy. Society isn't an endless font of charity for you to feed off of, and you're not entitled to my stuff. I didn't get well off by giving away everything I had, and I didn't beg like you either. I worked for it. You can too.

I would. It's a great idea, but I dunno, I like the current way to help new players, if there is some set up for it offering merit or something, its not really '"helping" new players it just becomes some other system like Battle Grounds or something.

I think two good ways to encourage this sort of mentality are:
1) Find a way to randomly identify players helping new players either by using a "Find" option in chat log of cities and maybe searching the word "Help"and kind of validating character activity or something. Once you can randomly identify a few people who helped people for a week you can give out random rewards.

OR

2) For the less man power approach, you can have an auto help request (which can be deactivated) on new players so that other players can simply do a search for who needs help and help them out.

But personally, I like the way of helping as shown in the video. It feels like RAGNAROK.

Eden Group's headquarters have already become a kind of gathering place for new/returning players, IF they know about it in the first place. I had no idea what it was for weeks when I returned to iRO until I read something about it on iROWiki and started using it.

I don't feel like a reward of any kind is necessary in these situations (helping others, donating time/money, etc). It seems to cheapen the entire justification behind it all. Each person does it for their own reasons, and to turn that into some kind of "system" with rewards removes the human player-to-player aspect of it all, making into another accomplishment or "thing" to acquire.

Besides, as you can see from the responses there is a huge range/variety in the type of help and the way in which it is delivered.

The intention is nice, but I would rather see people help others because they want to be helpful, not because they can earn free swag. Recognizing the efforts of those who help out is nice, but a rewards system would likely end up being a means to an end.

One thing that new players seem to have trouble with is acquiring zeny. It isn't much, but I've been trying to set up buy shops in the Eden HQ whenever I'm away from the computer for extended periods of time. Buying things like jellopies, bottles, feathers (for what I hope is a fair price!) - these are all things that are easy for lower levels to collect. They get some zeny and I get some items (for hat-making, potting, etc) and everyone wins Ragnarok.

There's someone doing that sometimes on Ymir too. Buying low-level randoms in Eden HQ. Its a nice intiative.

I don't think newbies "need" zeny so much as there should be more eden quests that give out novice red potions or maybe something better like a novice orange potion.

I get a lot of potions from the Eden quests on a new character. Mainly from the Skel Bones turnin which gives 100 pots per turnin.

But it'd probably be nice if they added Red Potions to the 11 ~ 25 range as well as the 26 ~ 40 range. Though you also get potions from Training Grounds.

I figured since there's a lot of running around involved in the quests and depending on the account type and number of tickets for transportation players get, it's likely that they might find themselves in need of zeny for transportation. For sure, to start off there isn't much new players need, but it's nice to think that someone's potential frustration might be lessened a bit.

If I remember correctly, several of the level 40ish delivery quests are repeatable and give out something like 100 red novice potions as a reward. There isn't any indication of what reward you're going to obtain upon completion of a quest, so people might not happen across them unless they set out to do them all. A novice orange potion sounds like a good idea as it would be a more helpful reward as players move up into the higher level quests.

Btw, I based my bottle buying price off one of your previous buying shops. You seem to follow the market and such more than I do, so I figured it would be a pretty okay price. In any case, we're running a little off topic, I think. ^^

Agreed.
I think a better way to help new players is redesigning the 26-40 Eden Quests. Currently they give lower exp than the 11-25 quests and the novice red potions don't help much at that level.

I think this "tutoring thing" is kinda interesting, but that "swag" doesn't sound that good, a lot of players would try to exploit this depending of these "rewards".

Also a list of players willing to help newbs and a schedule of these "helping sessions" in Eden HQ should be good... maybe also their classes and if these players speak other lenguages.

Maybe instead of tangible rewards, you could offer a point system similar to Yahoo answers, where the points get you nothing, but show others looking for help that you're a reliable and helpful person to ask. Seems a little more genuine-- those wishing to help would still get acknowledged, but not have their motives perverted by rewarding them.

I don't know but I really don't have any problem handing out free gears/zeny unless they ask in a rude manner. What little money to me is alot of money to them so I try to help out by giving like 1m. 1m can be spare change to me while they see it as endless supplies from the npc. Also other gears i dont use and spare kawaii headgears. It will help them enjoy ro more with a little spending money.
