Ok they way you show this issue, it means there is really a huge twist for protector.
Skill grid for prot used to be pretty straight forward and lacked of variety.
-most people avoided maxing dire hit, onslaugh caused they suk
-most people tend to power fully taunts, cause those are important for boss tanking and grinding tanking
-some people tend to get skills like vital stab and shield strike
-some people also rised shield skills for boss tanking,
-some avoid shield skills cause those suk at pvp since shield cannot block skills
-but there were always enough points to rise healings and defense skills
we always had plenity of points to rise most skills
So according to your posts, we might expect a new kind of protector
not the one with max shield/defense skills suit for boss tanking; but one suited for GvG and battlefields as support char
As for myself, i have this build
level 1 chain slash : filler but it gives quick cheap weak damage
level 1 vital stab + 1 dna : 20 sec destealth really helps agains rough and branches
level 1 will of fight : soccer kick filler
level 4 quick attack : enough to top sword and give bludgeon decent speed
level 1 physical blessing : soccer kick filler
level 10 survival instinct : beacuse long range defense is a very rare stat to get
level 1 skin of stone : mostly soccer kick filler but extra defense is never bad
level 10 shield strike + 1 dna: too unreliable at 70% hit. I take it 97% and still misses
level 5 taunt : 15 range pull
level 7 taunt cry : decent grind aggro at this level
never bothered with dire hit/onslaught
level 10 lowblow : main power skill and gives extra aggro when mid boss tanking
level 9 restrain ressecion : 20 sec recasting which overcomes most slowdown cooldown
level 10 restoration + 1 dna : max heal but only 1 dna. more than 1 dna doesnt help; really
level 7 sacred hand + 7 dna : awesome, can target anything
level 1 shield mastery : never maxed, i dont raid much, only biskra or ruinhorn
level 1 aegis of protection : also, never maxed again, i dont take on high raids
level 4 shield fortress + 4 dna: even it cannot help much at pvp it works grinding / tanking
level 4 lesser partyheal +4 dna:

level 7 spiritual intensification plus 7 dna:

this speaks itself
So with this build I reduced considerably tanking capabilities to rise GvG usefulness
and is so so when tanking.
Notice some RAID people get healing skills but they dont max those cause they consider they always have radiant or other healers backing up, instead they use their points on shield skills.
I used to have low blow level 1 and max level 10 both taunts when i used to raid tank
I gave up ubber tanking because tanking is suited more for S1 veteran players or S1 armor owners and with loads of money to expend on this game; never had a chance agains Lord Werinuman. I gave up, im free player one char (i work and study... you know).
At first glance i was dissapointed when i saw the new skills
i always claim prot is worst PvP not because weak attacks but is slowest class out of all
I was expecting skills like this:
Sentinel/body guard: Rush skill, 20 meters range, select an ally under physical attack and become target instead
Undersheet: lowers damage by x% when damage goes over 1000 hp
Guard shield: changes to guard instance to lower damage but cannot move
maybe an autorevive with long cooldown, like 10 minutes and resist%
And gosh, how i would love to get the new counterattack skill to make some classes
think twice before attacking, if they dont want to give prot attack skills at least they could give them this counter.
Anyways i believe now there will be a new generation of prots like mine that gave up tanking to become party effective.
will still sukas at PvP though.
Just like some tempest gave up magic power to rise support skills
And hell is really hard to be prot in pk server, im a punchingbag
but i dont give up i like challenges
