I would say just add about 15~20 MDEF to the current 5 MDEF that it already gives and that should make it worth its troubles.

only in pvp, and only because magic sucks in pvp atm.
If magic damage was on par with melee damage, 30% reduct to all elements wouldnt be a problem. Mdef is pretty useless on the whole atm though.

That's why I think it should work different in pvm/woe.
since mvp magic = atk
