Okay, I think this is important so I hope some one with authority reads this and looks more into this issue.

When it comes to copyrighted names, it only matters when the companies are competing in the same market.

For example:
Coke vs Koke. Visually similar and audibly the same. The product is also similar and competing in the same market. We may have a problem here.

But when there's two companies called Lexus, one being the car company and another being a computer software company. There is no competition between these businesses. They are offering different services, therefore not competing with one another in the same market. There should be no issue here.

So even if a musician goes by "Dragonica", there shouldbe no issue to continue calling our game "Dragonica" as well.

As far as my credibility goes, I've taken a few law classes.
I'm not a lawyer or anything so I'm not asserting that I am right (which means I could also be wrong).
I'm just trying to bring up a point because there may be no need for a name change.

I don't mean to sound snarky, but every reply I can come up with it sounds it. I'm going out on a limb to say that a company as large as Gravity has its own lawyer, and it's probably one with more credibility than a student who's taken a few classes. The post makes it seem like they did it just to be safe, and not fall into any legal issues/expenses.

Secondly, it's a matter of trademark law, not copyright. Copyright is for works afaik.

Not the same situation, but a good example of what has happened in the past: WWF vs WWF.

World Wrestling Federation and World Wildlife Fund are obviously not the same markets and shouldn't be confused, but they did end up fighting over similarly named websites, their trademarks and customer confusion. Obviously in an MMO vs a no-name musical artist, there probably wouldn't be an issue or confusion, but that doesn't make it any less of a potential legal matter.

tldr: legit companies cover their asses

To start, you don't sound snarky. You make a good arguement. Thanks for the heads up though, that made me smile. =]

Secondly, you're right. I just had a brain fart and couldn't think of the right word so I ended up saying "copyrighted names".
The examples I gave were also trademark issues, not copyright.
Good catch, and thanks.

As for the example you gave, it is similar, but I believe is a different issue.

Anyways, in the end, it's a good thing the are covering their asses for any possible lawsuits/expenses.
But I find it a bummer they had to change the name.

Me too. :[ Dragon Saga just doesn't have the same ring!

And I looked at it a bit more, and while it doesn't seem like something that would be eligible for a lawsuit based on trademark infringement (same with your Coke/Koke), there's still the issue of trademark dilution. Also super unlikely without the brands being famous, but hey, gotta stay safe.

Don't worry, guys. At least xFire still acknowledges the game as Dragonica.

I miss Dragonica...
Searched "Dragonica musician"

Did you mean: dragonica magician

He's a nobody artist that just has a myspace page. Dragonica is in several different countries. Why does the US version have to be called something else? Because some psychedelic artist with 6 songs has the same name?

I are mad.
