Maybe I missed it sorry but, does the first hit mean that you can -ALWAYS- pick up the loot even if you didn't damage the mvp further? I keep meeting people that just smack the mvp first and hang around till I kill (basically just watching or hitting it few times, obviously not bothering to kill) then rush for the loots.

^ Yeah.

No, you still have to do damage equal to about a third of the mvp's health.

Loot Priority: Damage Dealt (x2 bonus for first hit), whoever has the most gets loot.
MVP Priority: Damage Dealt + Damage Received, the highest combination gets MVP.
It's also worth noting that I've noticed that, if you die or leave the map, you need to get another hit off on the MVP before it dies for Gum to proc. It doesn't seem to matter for getting MVP or loot priority, though.

Originally the system was intended to balance things out a bit between Champs and Biochems and the rest of the classes so that someone couldn't come and fist something you'd been working and get loot, but lately MVPs are definitely just too easy and it's not working as it should.
The system was actually added relatively early in the first open beta test under the title 'anti-KS system'. It was incredibly common in the beta for players to ignore monster ownership or certain classes would level simply by kill stealing from other players. As a fix, gravity added it in that makes it so the 'kill stealer' is penalized in terms of damage and drop priority. Drop priority was also added at the same time to counter looters. The system is still active and is true of all monsters. If two players do 1000 damage to a monster with 2000 HP, the first player to hit it will get twice the exp the second player does, and probably the same with drop priority.
Of course, the system may not completely be good for MVP'ing as it currently is, but the purpose is to prevent a second player from 'stealing' from the first. With non-fixed spawn MVPs at least, it does sort of ensure that the first finder can't have his kill stolen by another, even if he's stronger (unless he's WAY stronger). If you have partners for MVP'ing, you could steal first hit with a character who will not be dealing damage so that no one can receive the first-hit benefit.

A wild Doddler appears.

The Idea of announcing the people on the same map what dropped and who got it seems nice. Its always a pain if something goes wrong while MVP'ing and you have to run away to recover and while your trying to run back you see the MVP bubble pop over you knowing you have seconds to get back to the corpse before someone takes your loot..
but the automatic Distribution feature scares me... an AB would never get any loot unless they were ME'ing something for a LONG TIME

By the way, does anyone have any idea about how I might go about out-DPSing a taoed DB RK on something like Gloom, to the point where one could override first hit loot priority?
wing it and damage it before he finds it.
Dirty, annoying, but that's how MVPing goes.
