Scott Bakula and more importantly Tony Shalhoub were born on this day as well and though it pains me to neglect them on their day of birth, I would be remiss in not giving due to one of the greats.
Born in 1940, John Lennon experienced a difficult youth and adolescence, separated from his father and losing his mother at the age of 17. He would find his place in the world as part of the Quarrymen, a high school band that evolved into the Beatles in the mid 1950s. As the oldest of the group and founder, he would come to be the most public of the group through it's history. His rebellious attitude and concerns about peace would inspire millions and piss off Nixon as a nice side effect.
The Beatles' history from there is well known as was his tragic end in 1980. Together with Paul, George and Ringo they made some amazing songs through the 1970s. How many other garage bands could say then evolved from boy bands into edgy rock and roll stars and then into weird avant-garde musicians? The distance from "Love Me Do" to "Come Together" is profound. Though John is being honored here, I still have infinite fondness for Paul's corny old fashioned songs, George's thoughtful and Sitar-Infused tunes and have a vocal range closest to dear Ringo.
I can say that my parents worn Beatles records, cassette tapes and later CDs would be probably the thing I listened to more than anything else growing up. Their style was always changing, with each record being a significant departure from the style (if not the spirit) of the ones that came before. RIP John, this post doesn't really do justice to the full story, which I recommend you guys read up on. Even just the info on wikipedia is absolutely fascinating. Heck you need only look as near as the Dangermouse mash up of the Beatles and Jay-Z to see some of the influence still felt in our culture.
Some of my Lennon written/sung favorites. Hopefully posting them does not cause a closure of WarpPortal due to legal issues. Enjoy!
